Matter and it's Physical Properties

Remember what Matter is?Anything that takes up space and has mass

Do you remember your States of Matter?

SolidLiquidGasPlasma (we don’t worryabout plasma in 5th grade)

So what are all the physical properties of matter?

Remember that when we learned about traits, physical traits were those that were part of the body of the organism – not behaviors.

So physical properties of matter are simply the properties that are part of the substance without changing it into a new substance (no chemical changes).

These are things you can detect with your senses or measure!

Examples of physical properties

We will spend most of our time on:DensitySolubilityConductivityMagnetism

You should already be able to find the following using your measurement skills!

• Length• Mass• Volume

Physical Properties of MatterBoiling Point – The temperature at which

liquid matter turns into a gas.The boiling point of water is 100oC.

Physical Properties of MatterMelting Point – The temperature at which

solid matter turns to liquidFreezing Point – The temperature at which

liquid matter turns to solidThe freezing/melting point of water is 0oC.

MassThe amount of matter in an objectThe gram is the metric unit for mass

Physical Properties of Matter

Physical Properties of Matter

Volume The amount of 3-dimensional space an object occupies. Also known as Capacity. Can be measured by the amount of water an object can move or displace. All states of matter have volume, but only solids have a set shape.

Physical Properties of MatterDensity – The amount of matter within a

certain amount of volume. We will focus on relative density in water.

Which do you think has a greater density?Bowling Ball or Soccer Ball

Physical Properties of MatterDensity – The more dense an object the

more it will sink and the less dense an object the more it will float in water.

Physical Properties of MatterSolubility – The ability for a substance to dissolve

In a solution ingredients of a mixture are spread out evenly throughout. You usually cannot see the dissolved ingredients (other than through color change).

Physical Properties of MatterMagnetism – Property of attraction to a

magnet. The entire Earth has a magnetic field!

Physical Properties of MatterConductivity: Ability of a substance to

allow electricity or heat to pass through it.Metals are good conductors of heat and

electricity.Materials known as insulators block heat or

electricity. Thermal (heat) insulators are things

like styrofoam Electrical insulators are things like:

rubber, plastic, cotton
