MATTER

1. What is it?

• Anything that takes up space (volume) and has

(mass).

• Matter is made up of one or more of over 92 naturally

occurring elements • Each element is a pure substance, made up of only one type

of atom

• Example

• Yorkie, Cat, Tree, You etc.

• Not Matter • Heat, Light, etc.

2. How do we measure how much matter?

• Mass: How much to we have? • NOT its Weight!

• in grams, centigrams, kilograms

• Volume: Dimensions • length x width x height

• In cubic centimeters (ccs) or milliliters (ml)

• Density: how compact/solid is it • Measured in g/ml or g/cc

Homogeneous Mixtures: Solutions and well stirred fluids

• Small particles can’t be see by naked eye

• Salt water

Heterogeneous Mixtures: Poorly Stirred fluids

• Larger Particles sometimes can be seen by naked eye

• Colloids: Clouds, Smokes, Milk

• Suspensions: Shake Well Before Using!

Two gasses such as H and O

Become liquid water

6

1. Each particle keeps its own identity… they are just blended

Together.

2, Heterogeneous mixtures may be made up of different “phases”

Solid, Liquid or Gas

• Example Chicken soup, a solid in a liquid.

• They don’t dissolve each other.

3, Homogeneous mixture is one phase solid OR liquid Or gas

• Example salt water, (l in l) brass (s in s)

Transmits: the light beam cannot be seen, the light rays Do NOT scatter

Transmits some means a small amount of the light rays scatter =Tyndall

10

1. Solution

a. Particles are so small that light can pass through them

2. Colloid

a. Particles are bigger, you can see the path of the light going through

3. Suspensions

a. Particles are very big light wont pass through and you have to keep

shaking them to keep them in suspension. A lot of medicines are

suspensions.

IF IT SAYS “SHAKE WELL BEFOR USING.” IT IS A SUSPENSION.
