Snake River Spring/Summer Chinook Salmon Captive Broodstock Projects

• Collect 0-age parr from tributaries• Reared in freshwater at

Lookingglass/Wallowa Fish Hatcheries• 33-50% of smolts transferred to Manchester

for seawater rearing• Reared in seawater at Manchester until they

display first signs of maturation• Maturing adults transferred to Bonneville

Freshwater Captive Broodstock Facility• Mature adults spawned at Bonneville Captive

Broodstock Facility• Progeny reared at Lookingglass Hatchery• Progeny released as smolts from tributary

acclimation sites

• Collect eyed eggs from redds• Reared in freshwater at Eagle Hatchery

• 100% of smolts transferred to Manchester for seawater rearing

• Reared in seawater at Manchester until they display the first signs of maturation

• Maturing adults transferred to Eagle Freshwater Hatchery

• Mature adults released into streams and allowed to spawn naturally

• Progeny rear naturally in the tributaries their parents spawned in

2003-2005 Objectives

• Conduct marine rearing of endangered Snake River spring/summer chinook salmon maintained in Regional captive broodstock programs

• Upgrade seawater delivery system

Seawater Delivery System

• Two 50 HP pumps supply 1,100 gpm of seawater

• 700-m pipeline

• Backup pump and emergency generators

Seawater Processing

• Sand Filters remove all particles larger than 20 microns

• Cartridge Filter remove all particles larger than 5 microns

• Ultra violet light used to disinfect filtered water• Water can be chilled several degrees below ambient• Aeration tower ensures oxygen level returned to

saturation value

Ozone Sterilization of Effluent

• Protects Puget Sound

• Permits Columbia Basin stocks to be transferred into the facility for seawater rearing

Smolt Transfer

• ODFW sentinels are sent to MRS first to ensure the fish are physiologically ready for seawater rearing

• Gently transitioned to seawater

• Initially reared in Building 12

Marine Rearing

• Reared 0.3-3 years• Minimal disturbance and

handling• Dry commercial diet• Automatic Feeders• Maintained on natural

photoperiod• Ramped lighting to prevent

startle• 0.84 kg/LPM maximum

loading density• 15 kg/m3 maximum rearing
