MAKING MOON

CRATERSDoes Height Change the Size

of a Crater?

Our Claim

The height you drop a

marble from changes

the size of the crater

you will make.

EvidenceWe gathered our

supplies and made

craters by dropping a

1 inch marble from

different heights. We

measured the sizes

of the craters we

made.We used flour,

cocoa powder,

meter sticks, and

marbles.

Data CollectionSize of

Height Size of

What happened?

1 inch From 2dm 4cm wide All of the flour/cocoa

stayed in the box

1 inch From 4 dm 7cm wide Most of the

flour/cocoa stayed in

the box, a small

amount of dust went

out

1 inch From 6 dm 9 cm wide Some flour/cocoa

went out of the box

and there was a dust

cloud.

1 inch From 1 meter 12 cm wide A lot of flour/cocoa

went out of the box.

There was a large

dust cloud.

This is the table we filled out

as we completed our

experiment.

Here is what

some of our

craters looked

like.

ReasoningWe made a line

graph to show

how the height

changes the

crater.

The higher the

height of the

marble, the

bigger the crater.
