1. Briefsummaryofwhattheresearchisabout.
Followingthewithdrawaloflegalaidinareassuchasfamilylawdisputes,thenumbersoflitigantsrepresentingthemselves(litigantsinperson,hereafterLiPs)hassignificantlyincreased.ThishasbeenacauseofconcerntoBirminghamCivilJusticeCentreandLawSociety.Withtheirco-operation,amixedmethodsstudyisbeingundertakentoexploretheexperienceofLiPs,bothpriortolitigationandatthehearingstage,andinparticularthedifficultiestheyencounterwithlegaldiscourse.Themethodsemployedcomprisequestionnaires,interviewsandobservations.Thequestionnaireincludesquestionsdesignedtoelicitthebio-demographicdetailsofthelitigantinperson,typeofcourtcasetheyareinvolvedin,theirinformation-seekingstrategiesandcourtexperience.
