School chief says—noclasses through April 17San Joaquin County
Superintendent ofSchools James Mous-alimas this week an-nounced a recommenda-tion to extend the closureof all public schools inSan Joaquin Countythrough Friday, April 17,to help stop the spreadof the novel coronavirus(COVID-19).
The action follows pub-lic orders to stay at homeissued by the Governorof California on March19 and by San JoaquinCounty’s Public HealthOfficer and its Emer-gency Services Directoron March 21.
“During this unprec-edented public healthemergency, it is our re-sponsibility to ensure thesafety of our children, our families, and our en-tire community. In the
interest of public safety~I am recommending thatall public schools in SanJoaquin County remainclosed through Friday,April 17. Extending cur-rent school closures willhelp prevent the trans-mission of COVID-19,which is essential to pro-tecting the most vulner-able members of ourcommunity and reduc-ing the potential strainon our health care sys-tem,” Mousalimas said.“Schools play an impor-tant role in our commu-nities. Since school clo-sures began, districtleaders, teachers, andother school staff acrossSan Joaquin Countyhave been working dili-gently to provide mealsand instructional oppor-tunities for all children.”
The recommendationfrom Mousalimas to ex-tend the school closureis an extension of hisMarch 13 recommenda-tion to close schools. This is a rapidly chang-ing situation and recom-mendations may changebased upon the latestguidance or orders fromfederal, state, or localagencies.
The San JoaquinCounty Office of Educa-tion (SJCOE) continuesto communicate dailywith public health offi-cials and district leadersin order to monitor andrespond to the evolvingsituation. Over the pasttwo weeks, the SJCOEand school districts haveadapted to the emer-gency to continue to pro-vide vital services to stu-dents and their families.

A friend recently sentme a photo of a dearsweetie knitting some-thing for her husbandwhile being shut in withhim for this unspecifiedamount of time; it was anoose! I chuckled at thehumor, but seriously, this doesn’t feel very dif-ferent than usual for hubby and 1. Well yes, thecautions we must practice whenever we go into town(Twin Falls) for materials or food is. But since mov-ing to rural Idaho Stan, and I have been together24/7. July 2018 to today we have been, and arealways together. You may recall we are building ourown home here. It’s a good thing we make great.partners, and like each other. Even when raisingour kids we never fought, though agitated discus-sions did, and still do happen. I guess the fact thatwe respect each other is a biggee.
The big scary elephant in the room right now isthis virus, and my soon to be 93 year old Dad, andhis wife who live nearby. Fortunately he is healthyand hardy. Always working around his acre+ ranch-ette. He prunes the trees, feeds the chickens, geese, and goats. He has recently installed a pellet stove, and added an oil burner to the furnace that used toburn wood. He attends to the swamp cooler in thesummer. He is always busy.
Idaho has been the second to the last state to haveany cases of Covid-19, and as of today only 1 casehas been found’ in Twin Falls County. But like otherstates Idaho does not have enough tests. We nowhave 80 cases in the state. Are there cases in thecommunity that have not been revealed yet? Everytime we go into town we must be hyper vigilant. Iread the numbers of those who tested positive, theirlocations, and weigh the risk to us transmitting thisvirus to farnily.

San Joaquin CountyPublic Health Services(PHS) last week an-nounced the deaths oftwo county residentsfrom Coronavirus Dis-ease 2019 (COVID-1 9).The individuals wereamong the high riskpopulations, elderly withunderlying medical con-ditions. One death wastravel related and theother was from commu-nity transmission. Nofurther details aboutthese cases will beshared due to patientprivacy.

A biographeronce wrote ofChristopher Co-lumbus that“He discoveredno island or sea as lonely ashimself.”
How different for those whotrust God!
David wrote, “When You,God, went out before Yourpeople, when You marchedthrough the wilderness ... Youprovided for the poor!”
The writer of Hebrews ech-oed those words when hewrote, “I will never leave younor ever forsakeyou..”
King Nebuchadnezzar re-fused to hear the testimony ofthree young men. He boundthem and threw them into afiery furnace. In amazement, when he looked into the fur-nace he did not see three men,but four: unharmed and un-bound. He shouted, “Servantsof the Most High God, comeout! Come here!” God wentbefore them, protected themand rescued them.
On one occasion the dis-ciples of Jesus were frightenedby the winds and the wavesthat were threatening them. They were in a little boat withlittle hope. Then Jesus ap-peared and said, “Take cour-age. Don’t be afraid. It is l!” Hewent to them, calmed theirfears and then said, “You oflittle faith. Why did youdoubt?”
A Psalmist was travelingthrough a deep valley withdark shadows. He was filledwith great fear as he faced the“unknown.” Yet, he was ableto say, “I will fear no evil, forYou are with me. Your rod andYour staff will comfort me!” Hetrusted God because He neverabandoned Him.
The Lord always goes beforeus to protect us. He will pro-vide for everything we neednow and through eternity.
One night before climbinginto bed, Brad knelt with hismother to pray. “Now I lay medown to sleep, I pray TheeLord, my soul to keep; if Ishould die before I wake...”There was a long pause andsuddenly he stopped praying.
“Go on,” said his mother toencourage him.
“I can’t,” he cried and ranfrom the room.
A few moments later he re-turned and finished theprayer, “I pray Thee Lord mysoul to take.”
“What happened?” hisMother asked.
“Well,” he confessed, “justbefore we knelt to pray, I wentinto James’ room and took allof his toy soldiers and hidthem. Then I hid his tanks, cannons and trucks so hecouldn’t see them. And after Istarted to pray I had to stopand make everything right be-cause I knew that Godwouldn’t hear me.”
Many times we pray and getno answers. Often we thinkthat God is not willing to hearus or unable to help us. Butthat is not true.
We cannot knowingly havesin in our hearts and lives andgo to God and expect Him toanswer our prayers. If we ex-pect God to hear and answerour prayers we must makethings right first.
Said the Psalmist, “if I hadcherished sin in my heart, theLord would not have listened.”It is only when we willinglyconfess and forsake our sinsthat we can expect God to an-swer our prayers. It may betime to stop in the middle of aprayer, right some wrongs andthen pray.

Cleo, my good cat, is evolving and changing every time I
turn around. I thought she had exhausted the all the possi-
bilities of how much her small brain could hold and she
could not possibly learn any
more new skills. I was dead
wrong. How wrong I was
became clearer when I
stopped at my front door
yesterday morning on the
way to go to town for some
shopping.
As I always have done, I
stopped to clean out her cat
box, which sits behind the
front door. I use a small
plastic sifter, which allows
me to rake through the sand and collect any small bits of
her business leavings. I collect the remains of her business
and toss them out into the backyard compost pile. They add
to the ground’s fertilizer, and enriches the land.
This morning what did I find when I made ready to do my
small task? I found the sifter had been carried across the
hallway floor, where it lay several feet from where I last left
it. Who moved the sifter? You guessed it. Cleo moved the
sifter. She was trying to ace me out of the job of my daily
chore of cleaning out her cat box. Cleo tried, as a first step,
to manage the sifter, before tackling the harder job of sifting
for bits of what was left in the cat box sand.
Sure as day follows night, Cleo’s intention was to learn
that skill and take on the job of cleaning her own cat box. All
this, I ike everything else she has done, was to make clear to
me she is an independent cat.
Why do I think this is what Cleo was planning and this is
what happened? I’ll tell you why I know. It was because of
what happened to my cell phone. My cell phone is an article
that I carry when I go to the front room to use my gravity
machine. My Gravity machine lets me hang upside down and
that, I believe, will help straighten my bent over spine.
This time, when I went into the front room, I set my phone
on the coffee table, which is next to the gravity machine. I
forgot I left it there until later. When I looked for the phone
and could not find it where I knew I left it; on the coffee table
next to the gravity machine; I gave up.
After searching the house, I passed by the piano, which is
ten feet from that same coffee table, where I left my phone.
Instead of my lost cell phone anywhere near the coffee table,
it was on the carpet lying next to the piano bench.
No one else, except Cleo, could have picked that cell phone
off the coffee table and carried to the carpet next to the
piano bench, where she it slipped out of her paws. That was
my proof that Cleo can pick up and carry objects like the cat
box sifter.
So, you see, Cleo is growing smarter every day. I think, to
start the springtime off right, I shall let Cleo clean out her
own cat box every day. Also, it is time to teach her some
logarithmic theorems, or the Latin alphabet.

Stan, and I are early 70’s. We are very active, and in goodhealth. But we too are in the danger category. If exposed wouldwe suffer a mild case or could we get seriously ill? While wehave found no need to panic buy TP, we are limiting our expo-sure. Grocery store, keeping safe distance, Home Depot, andpost office. Using credit cards not cash. And ordering as muchas possible on-line.
We may have to forego our weekly get-togethers with Dad,and his wife. But as of right now, we are more blessed thansome. Our family members, and loved ones are safe, even thosein western Washington.
We pray you and your loved ones stay safe.Pam Fish is a former resident of Linden.

More about—COVID-19testing.
“It is important that resi-dents who may be experienc-ing COVID-19 symptomscontact their healthcare pro-vider first,” said Dr. Park.“Public Health Services is notdirectly collecting samplesfrom individuals. Onlysamples received from localhealthcare providers whohave screened patients withthe highest medical need arebeing tested in our laboratoryfacility.”
To protect those most vul-nerable (people age 65 andolder and/or those withchronic medical conditions)from exposure to COVID-19,it is critical for everyone tofollow these recommenda-tions:
— If you have any COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, and shortness of breath),
stay home. Most people withmild symptoms can care forthemselves.
— If you are experiencingworsening symptoms and arein the high risk category, im-mediately contact your localhealthcare provider. Peopleshould only call 911 if they feelthey are in imminent danger.
— Avoid contact or maintainat least a six feet distance withanyone, especially those in thehigh risk category.
— Urge those age 65 andolder and anyone with under-lying chronic medical condi-tion to stay away from largegatherings.
— Wash your hands oftenand be sure to practice goodhand washing techniques.
— Cover coughs and sneezeswith a tissue, then throw thetissue in the trash. If tissuesare not available, cough or
sneeze into the inside of yourelbow. Then wash your handsagain.
— Avoid touching your face, eyes, and mouth.
— Clean and disinfect fre-quently touched objects andsurfaces using a regularhousehold cleaning spray orwipe.
— If sick, stay home to re-duce the exposure to others for10 days from onset of symp-toms, and await 72 hours af-ter symptoms resolve.
“We understand this is a dif-ficult time and our prioritycontinues to be protecting thehealth of our community,”said Dr. Park. “It is evidentthat novel coronavirus is cir-culating community-wide. Forthis reason, everyone is partof the solution and applyingsocial distancing is crucial inmitigating this disease.”

My cousin Michael and I had
reserved spots aboard the
Gatecrasher well ahead of
sturgeon season. Our Sunday
finally came, and we met at the
Pittsburg Marina, wide-eyed
and toting enough food to feed
an army. It was a gorgeous,
clear morning, and by 7:30 am
we were off and running to-
wards Grizzly Bay. Once an-
chored, we were politely quar-
antined to the cabin of the 28-
foot Farallon while Captain
Zack Medinas and Deckhand
Virginia Salvador started
preparations. “It’s for your
safety,” Virginia advised with
a grin. Zack attached a cheese-
cloth bundles filled with
salmon roe to the hooks, and
Virginia masterfully cata-
pulted them into the air, stra-
tegically placing lines from ten
different rods. That accuracy
comes with a lot of practice
and is no easy feat consider-
ing there are 20-ounce sink-
ers at each ends of each line.
“My guess is that we’re in here
because Zack wants to protect
his secret recipe,” Michael
laughed. “He’s taking it to his
grave!” Once we were all set
up, we were allowed back on
deck.
I had just started digging
into some smoked salmon my
cousin had brought on board
for our trip when I heard the
captain yell. “Rod four! STACY,
YOU’RE UP!” Cracker crumbs
flew out of my lap as I shuffled
as quickly as I could towards
the starboard side of the boat.
The tip of a rod in the back
corner went from a gentle flick
to a full on bend, so out of its
holder it came and the battle
began. This fish was, in a
word, ANGRY! I was forcefully
pulled to the right, and nearly
everyone on the boat pitched
in by removing seven other
rods out of their holders and
lifting them out of the way to
avoid a tangled-up mess.
When I could, I planted my feet
in, attempt to gain some sem-
blance of control. Other times,
I felt I had no control. This fish
was hooked, and it definitely
wasn’t happy about it. Sixty
seconds later, it had me cor-
nered - the right side of my
body was up against the cabin,
so I had nowhere to go. Vir-
ginia swooped in and coached
me through the rest of the
fight, adjusting my drag when
necessary and reminding me
to use proper body form to re-
gain control. “When it runs,
you let it run,” Virginia in-
structed. “Hold it, and keep
your 90-degree angle to the
boat it helps guide where the
fish can fight.” “Then, you’re
going to reel down to the wa-
ter, and use your weight to get
the rod up to your shoulder.
Use more of your squat than
your back.” I knew my years
of weight training would even-

Shaking hands in church?
Glenn Mollette …
Dr. Glenn MolletteHera;d correspondent
In the old days, Church pas-tors frowned on their churchmembers staying home towatch television preachers RexHumbard, Jerry Falwell orRobert Schuller. The sick andthe very elderly were typicallypardoned but that was as faras grace was extended. Thevast majority of churchesacross the land did not tele-vise their services or broadcastchurch on the radio. Tradi-tionally churches have pre-ferred keeping their flock com-ing to the “house of God.”
Essentially most churcheshaven’t changed their philoso-phy. Congregations have al-ways enjoyed “gathering” tosing, hear sermons, eat mealstogether and importantly -shake hands.
Media ministry in the olddays was usually reserved forthe large and affluentchurches that could afford tobuy television time or at leastradio air time. Televisionbroadcasting has always been
expensive and so very fewchurches have been able totelevise their services. A fewmore churches through theyears have been able to affordradio time.
I remember one of my old-time preacher friends shaminghis congregation one Sunday,He said, “One reason youpeople should not sit homeand watch church on yourtelevision is because you can’tshake hands with your televi-sion.”
The church has alwaysplaced a lot of emphasis on“togetherness, shaking hands, hugging and embracing oth-ers.” Now, no one wants toshake hands and embraceeach other. Because of Covid-19 people are trying to stay sixfeet apart.
Furthermore, almost everyminister and congregation inthe country has the ability tobroadcast his or her service viathe Internet or Facebook. Me-dia ministry now is availableto almost everyone. Ministersnow want people to tune in onFacebook or whatever mediathey are using. Ministers stillprefer that people attendchurch, but if they are the“ones” being watched then it’sfine.
It’s ironic how thingschange. What used to be kindof taboo for some churches iswidely embraced now. One ofthe reasons is because it’s soavailable. It’s also affordable.People have computers andcell phones. People are onFacebook or have some otherInternet accessibility. Radioairtime is more affordable inmany areas. Things and timeschange. Plus, we’ve never beenhit by anything like thispandernic where people arebeing told to stay home andthat church is off limits. Who-

tually pay off! The last thing I
wanted to do was lose this fish.
“A lot of guys try to strong-arm
these fish,” Zack added. “For
some reason, women know to
plant their feet and use whole
upper body as leverage.”
After a few more minutes of
this rhythmic pumping action,
we all saw color and I breathed
a sigh of relief and accomplish-
ment. This was my bucket list
fish for 2019, a goal I had set
for myself after chatting with
Virginia and Zack at the Inter-
national Sportsmen’s Expo
back in January. I looked at
Virginia and exclaimed, “Now
I know why you love this so
much!” We all got a good look
at my beautiful sturgeon once
Captain Zack gently placed it
on the deck. It was 50 inches,
caught in roughly 50 feet of
water, and every bit of 50
pounds. Its head was as hard
as a turtle shell, and the dia-
mond markings were just
breathtaking. “This one is
about 20 years old,” Zack
stated. A good photo is always
key, so Zack helped me get
into proper position; after all,
a 50-pound sturgeon is not
something you want to drop
onto the deck of a boat. Shots
were taken, then we released
the beautiful specimen back
into the Delta. Ten minutes
later, my cousin was giggling
at me. “You’re still shaking!” I
looked down, laughing at my
arms, which were spasming
involuntarily. This is why I
fish!
Once everything settled
down, Zack fired up the gas
grill at the boat and started
cooking up chicken and torti-
llas. We had a nice spread with
street tacos, chips and dips,
and key lime pie. Not a bad
spot for a Sunday picnic!
Stuffed, I retired to the cabin
to learn why Zack feels so
strongly about catch and re-
lease when it comes to stur-
geon. “There’s such an over-
abundance of other sustain-
able fish to eat out here,” he
said. “What a lot of people
don’t know is that compared
to other parts of the country,
the Delta is actually one of the
least abundant locations for
sturgeon. So, why not release
and help preserve the popula-
tion?” This is where my cousin
chimed in, laughing. “My
friend told me he boils stur-
geon four times before he eats
it. Why would you want to kill
something that has to be
boiled four times?” Zack
agreed. Zack also works
closely with the Department of
Fish and Wildlife as well as UC
Davis to constantly educate
himself. “UC Davis biologists
determined that permanently
removing a sturgeon from
these waters creates a 25-year
ripple effect. That’s a huge
impact on our fishery.” The
late Rich Tipton of Lucky
Strike Charters was one of
Zack’s biggest mentors and
has had a big influence on his
passion for conservation and
why he feels so strongly about
sustainable fishing practices.
“People often call sturgeon
“dinos” because they are pre-
historic. However, they are not
from the Jurassic period - they
are from the Triassic period.
So far, they’ve survived every-
thing except for the existence
of mankind.” This conversa-
tion provided me with a brand-
new perspective on both fish-
ing and conservation. So when
a fellow passenger, 8-year old
Owen, landed his sturgeon
later in the day, I had a deeper
appreciation for Zack’s care-
ful handling of the fish before
releasing it back to its home. I
once caught the same stur-
geon twice in the same day,”
Zack laughed. “Who knows,
you just might see this one
again some day!” As if I needed
more motivation to come back
to the Gatecrasher!
Maybe re-catching my beast
should be on my bucket list
for 2020?

ever thought that church at-tendance might be ordered bythe governor to be off limits?
Many houses of worship be-gan building their websitesyears ago so that memberscould do their giving online. This is a good thing especiallyif people are already in thehabit of donating this way.Churches who do not gathertypically never recoup theirgiving. Some faithful memberswill catch up on charitable giv-ing but most will not.
Houses of faith will surviveduring this virus crisis but lifewill change for most congre-gations. Many will be excitedto get back to the church pewand shaking hands when theycan. Or, they may concludethey don’t need to shakehands anymore.
