Multiplying Fractions Review!

• When multiplying fractions, always reduce first! Then multiply across.

Example:

Simplify first, then multiply across (answers can be left in factored form). Don’t forget to state excluded values , when asked. (what x-value makes the denominator = 0)

Steps for Multiplying Rational Expressions: 1.Factor if possible. (This is a good time to find excluded values if asked) 2.Divide out common factors (reduce) 3.Multiply across top and bottom (may leave as factors)

Landing our Big Ideas:

Remember the basics: • Always start factoring by looking for a GCF • Reduce early • Divide means flip second fraction and multiply • Make all polynomials fractions by putting a 1 below them • Multiply across top and bottom • Cancel entire factors when reducing

Excluded Values: Denominator can’t be zero. • Factor and find excluded values before combining or reducing
