Old Advance Article TellsOf Bellport 's 7893 Hooker

By Thomas R. BaylesThe following account of the

dedication of the Bellport Hookand Ladder Company is takenfrom The Patchogue Advance forNovember 24, 1893.

"The boys of the PatchogueHook and Ladder Co., about 25strong, with their truck, were metat Dunton by the handsome com-pany of the Bellport Hook andLadder boys with their new truck, and headed by the band and es-corted by a torch light brigademarched on to Bellport. Aftera short stop at the truck house, the procession moved down Bell-port Ave. and back again to thetruck house, after which the fire-men repaired to Woodruff's Hallwhere seats had been reserved forthem.

"The hall was packedwithover300 pecple and the musical pro-gramme was executed with all theskill and grace characteristic ofBellport's talented musicians.

"Chief Edwin Bailey of Pat-chogue , in presenting the newtruck to the firemen on behalfof the people of Bellport, compli-mented both the people of Bell-port and the firemen, by sayingthat the former were worthy ofpraise for making possible theformation of the company and thefiremen were worthy of equalpraise for rallying so heartilyto the work before them.

"Foreman Everett M. Price,or. receiving the truck on behalfof the company, thanked the peoplefor the confidence reposed In thevolunteer firemen, and hoped theorganization of the fire companywas the beginning of greaterthings for the village.

"Rev. Frisbie made a speechand presented a fine silver trum-pet to the fire company on behalfof the manufacturers of the hand-some modern equipped truck.

"After cheering the closingwords of Mr. Drinker the audi-ence repaired to the new truckhouse where the ladies of the vil-lage served a delicious and boun-tiful lunch was served to everyone.

.This expression of hospitality

went right to the hearts andstomachs of the Patchogue boys.Their only regret was that it wasnot in good form to eat the wait-ers, as they certainly did lookgood enough and sweet enough tosatisfy any epicurean taste.

"While the people of Bellportare congratulating themselves onthe possession of a welj equippedand well manned Hook and LadderCo., the time may come when theywill see the heroic efforts of theyoung men save their village fromtotal destruction. The editor ofthe Advance counts himselfhonored in being permitted tomake the acquaintance of suchgentlemanly brother firemen.

"The officers of the new Arecompany are Everett M. Price, foreman; Barney King, asst. fore-man; Charles H. Hawkins, secre-tary, and John H. Weidner, trea-surer." _________

SWEARING IN new officers of the Central Brookhaven Republican Club is District Court Judge MortonWeissman at left. New officers of the club were installed at a meeting of the club held recently at theCoram Community hall. Pot chogueAmbulance Co.Contest Winners

Cindy Kleinman, who just com-pleted fifth graft in the BartonAve. School, and Miriam Gelfer,a 7th grade pupil in St. Fran-cis de Sales Parochial School, are the winners in the recentessay contest sponsored by diePatchogue Fire Department Am-bulance Company.

In announcing the contest re-sults, die company said Cindy andMiriam will each receive twoWorld's Fair tickets, two LIRRtickets to the World's Fair and$5 spending money. The contesttopic was, 'What the PatchogueAmbulance Means to My Com-munity.''

Cindy Klelnm-n's essay fol-lows:

"The Patchogue Ambulancemakes us f e e l saf e and secure. It makes us feel that part ofour worry vanishes because incase we get sick, the Ambu-lance takes us to the hospitalquickly.

"Without the Patchogue Am-bulance we'd have difficulty Intransportation and people maydie. The Ambulance crew savesmany lives since many times itis a matter of life and death.

"Men who volunteer to be am-bulance frivers are appreciatedby the people of the community. If every town or community hadan ambulance life Patchogue has.we would all be very secure.'

Miriam Gelfer*s essay follows:"Speeding through traffic,

darting down side streets, help-ing someone in distress---t _isIs what the volunteers who drivedie Ambulance do.

"Whetherjfit is a Are or anaccident you can be sure thePatchogue Ambulance will getmere and in a hurry.

"People should think highly ofthese men. Our family does, be-cause last year they helped savethe life of my brother.

"For this and for saving thelives of others in my commun-ity, I think Patchogue should setaside a day to honor these menwho so unselfishly devote them-selves to the community in timeof distress."
