8LB: Music to your ears
Learning Objectives:1.Identify the different parts of a sound wave2.Describe the relationship between wave amplitude and intensity + wave frequency and pitch
A sound can be…
Write down words that describe sounds?
Scientist use microphones to detect sounds.
If a microphone is attached to a oscilloscope, you can see a representation of the sound wave.
By looking at the wave (trace) on the oscilloscope screen, we can describe what the sound is like.
What are sound waves
The height of a wave is called its amplitude. (a high amplitude is a loud noise)
The number of complete waves (cycles) is called frequency
(measured in hertz or Hz)
The distance between the same point on 2 cycles is called a wavelength.
(waves with higher frequencies have shorter wavelengths)
(L.O:1)
Draw a wave with a high frequency and short wavelength + label
Draw a wave with a low frequency and low wave length + label
Draw a wave with a high amplitude, high frequency and short wavelength
Questions
If the wave has a high amplitude it is going to be loud
If the wave has a high frequency it is going to be high pitch
(L.O:2)
Video
Sound= Vibrations
Read pages 164- 165 in the book and then answer questions 1-7
Once you have finished this I will project an extension on the board.
Questions
Label the sound wave
If a wave is loud it must have a high …..
A high pitch sound will have a high ….
