From the Director
The Zone of Comfort
Are you comfortable …
relaxed … satisfied … settled
… content … at peace? Or
are you tired … just waiting
… unmotivated … fearing the
unknown ... apathetic …
feeling defeated? These are
posit ive and negative
emotions, both associated with the state of staying put.
How about excited … empowered … frustrated ...
stretching … striving … exerting … uncomfortable
… bold? These words represent how you might feel
when you step out of your comfort zone. Some aregood feelings, and some are not, but all can happen
when you challenge yourself.
Who Matters
Let's be clear: you are doing the challenging and the
target is yourself . This is an important distinction as it
is the focus of this issue of the Learning Link. Here's
the difference. What words come to mind when you
think about being challenged by someone else? Or
when you are the one challenging another person?
It's different, isn't it?
When we challenge ourselves, we make the conscious
choice to step outside of that comfort zone, choose
something difficult or unusual, and accept the change
and growth that happens. You can do this. You do it
every day when you read a new book, argue your
opinion, try a new dish, go for a walk, or reflect
quietly on your life and what you want to change.
How will you challenge yourself today?
We have collected a broad variety of opportunities for
you. Do you want to challenge your body and
willpower? Read about the Biggest Loser on page 7 or some of the other health and wellness options.
Are you looking for cultural exploration? Join us for
an autumn adventure in Québec City described on
page 8.
How about a career change? Take a bold step by
enrolling in one of the certificate programs beginning
on page 23, such as Pharmacy Technician, Medical
Billing and Coding, Office Assistant, WorkReady
Credential, or HVAC Technician.
Are you ready to tackle your fear of math ? Go back to
school or earn your high school diploma? Find these
opportunities on page 13 and 27.
Some challenges are big, requiring a leap of faith into
the unknown, while some are small, just barely
nudging us to the edge of our comfort zone. But all are
necessary for personal growth and fulfillment.
Go ahead—
Challenge Yourself!
Challenge Yourself!

Got Stress?
Life in the 21st century seems to be going faster and
faster, and sometimes we feel as though we can't keep
up. Stress can come from a wide variety of physical,
chemical or emotional origins and is cumulative. It can
manifest as simple headaches, a cold, all the way up to a
serious illness or injury. As we age, our ability to
"handle" stress diminishes. In this class we'll discuss
stress factors, and ways to reduce and minimize stress in
our lives. Come learn simple and effective stress
reduction techniques you can use everyday.

grand Chateau Frontenac.
Fall is also harvest season, when open-air markets fill
to overflowing with local produce and specialty
products. Along with the markets, orchards,
vineyards, and producers of craft cider, beer, berry
wines and mead welcome visitors to
sample their products.
Many exciting and accessible natural
attractions in the region are a magnet for
hikers and photography buffs. This is
also the time for the Great Color
Adventure — a spicy fall event featuring
outdoor shows, a rallye, nighttime events
and an amazing palette of autumn shades!

The dance is proud and powerful, soft and sinewy withelegant and isolating movements emanating from the
core. It's the Pilates of dance. And so much fun! Please
wear comfortable clothing, similar to what you might
wear to a yoga class that will allow free movement and
the ability to see your movement. Hip scarves make it
even more fun! You can
dance barefoot or in a pair
of confortable dance shoes.
Zils (finger cymbals) will
also be used in class.

Hunter Safety (firearms) is a
twelve hour course which
covers shotguns, rifles, map
& compass, wilderness first
aid, survival, landowner
relations, ethics, laws,
introduction to archery,
handguns, crossbow and
trapping.
The State and volunteer safety instructors have
worked diligently in promoting firearms hunter safety
over the years. There were nineteen fatalities in 1950
and 1952 which were the two worst years during the
firearms season here in Maine. Today there are still
incidents with many being self inflicted loading or
unloading of firearms or a hunter swinging on game
out of his or her zone of fire. These are just two
examples of categories involving hunter incidents.
The State has had a number of years with zero
fatalities showing safety programs work.
Today more and more
parents, grandparents, and
guardians are attending these
courses with sons, daughters,
grandsons, granddaughters etc. Junior hunters must
complete a firearms hunter safety course before they
can purchase an adult license which allows them to
hunt alone.
Courses are offered by volunteer instructors whose
experience with firearms safety share a passion on
graduating safe, knowledgeable, responsible, and
involved hunters. This base of volunteer instructors is
critical to the DIF&W Safety Divisions success.
Hunting has become one of the safest outdoor
activities we enjoy today. If you want to know how to
properly handle a firearm, store, clean, load, & unload
firearms which are in the home, this is the course you
should take. The course is not just about harvesting
game; it is about safe, knowledgeable, responsible and
involved participation in all aspects of the sport. Many
parents find, after taking the course, that firearms in
the home is where most of the firearms accidents
happen and what is necessary to prevent these
situations through education and training.
Other safety courses such as Archery, Crossbow,
Trapping, ATV, Snowmobile and Boating round out
the safety courses offered by DIF&W Information &
Education Recreational Safety Division. These safety
courses offer a multitude of information with many of
the courses offering hands on and home study.
Students receive State certification upon completion of
the course which includes a test at the end of each
program. Thanks to the Adult Education programs
participating with DIF&W Information & Education
we can offer these safety programs throughout the
State.

Student Voices
Meet Connie PerkinsMy journey of completing
my high school education
started when I found out I
was pregnant with my son. Ilived in Missouri and the
adult education program
there was not very helpful or
friendly; I felt like I was
being judged from the start, and like I was a
burden to the teachers.
I moved to Maine to be with my family. I didn’t
know anyone or anything about this new place, but I was referred to Wiscasset Adult Education.
When I walked in the building I was instantly
welcomed with open arms and treated like a
person and not a burden. I didn’t have to wait to
get started, I was able to jump right into classes
and move closer to my GED. The teachers were
awesome, caring individuals that helped me
through every step to furthering my education. I
made friends right away and felt extremely
confident that I could complete my GED testswith flying colors and that I did thanks to all the
great people at Wiscasset Adult Ed, thanks you
guys I couldn’t have done it without you!
My parents and I are all so thankful to have had
the experiences we have had here. My parents
didn’t think they would see their daughter
graduate and because I came to Adult Ed, my
parents saw me walk across a stage in a cap and
gown! I feel very accomplished and I am very
excited to move on to college and make a better
life for me and my son. I would without a doubt
recommend coming to Wiscasset Adult Ed if you
are looking to further your education. They will
not let you down, that is a promise I can keep.
Take it from someone who went from no GED to
being on my way to a psychology career in a
matter of months —it’s worth it. Don’t think
twice, just do it!
Meet Margaret GraceLike most people I know, I’ve spent most of my
life working two jobs just to pay for the
essentials. That paycheck to paycheck mentality
doesn’t leave a lot of time for career introspection.
A health crisis in December of 2008 gave me the
time to think about changing that. I knew I
wanted to change work fields, but had no set
direction on how to go about doing that.
Back to SchoolIn May 2010, I completed the WorkReady
Credential program taught by Megan Dichter at
Wiscasset Adult & Community Education. What
a great class to offer for mid-life career
transitions, young people just entering the work
force and anyone who wants to build a plan
towards their career goals!
Megan taught us the current requirements for a professional resume, gave us the tools to
determine our transferable skills and kept the
class focused and up beat during what was, for
most of us, a depressing unemployment setback.
The class included mock interviews with local
businesses, and we were given direct, forthright
feedback on how to improve our performance for
a real interview.
Transition to College
In January of 2011, I received an email from
Anne Fensie, the director, offering a 10%
discount to any classes in their latest brochure. It
was then that the staff at Wiscasset Adult &
Community Education told me about TLC3: The
Lincoln County College Connection — a course
offered free of charge for people who are
interested in college to get up to speed on
reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Student Voices
TLC3 also offered intensive tutoring assistance
outside of class as well as computer classes and
free college and career counseling geared
towards each students’ personal goals.
Supportive Staff
Elizabeth Potter was a very patient teacher but
she stretched our comfort zones with essay
assignments. Melinda Gilman gave us practical
guidance towards a step-by-step process to
achieve our goals. From the friendly
professionalism of the Director, Anne Fensie, to
the daily heartfelt words of encouragement from
Pat Cloutier, the ―Jack of all trades‖
administrative assistant, to Dawn Wheeler as atutor, you will not find a more helpful group of
people to help you on your journey.
Joining the Lincoln County College Connection
was the best decision I ever made. I am starting
Business Administration classes at SMCC this
fall. I never would have applied for school and
federal funding without the guidance and self
confidence I received from the staff at WiscassetAdult & Community Education.
Meet Sandra LoweryThese are my thoughts and impressions on the
WorkReady 55+ program at Wiscasset Adult Ed.
I’ve always loved learning, and I’ve always
loved my teachers. David Roundy and Suzi Ater,
the two teachers who taught this course, are nowon that list. I have learned so much from Suzi
about Microsoft Office 2007. There has not been
enough time in this course to learn it all, but she
certainly touched on all the important aspects.
She provided a lot of handouts, and had amazing
patience with some of us slow pokes. I am not a
business student, but rather more of a liberal arts
type. I did not get much office training in high
school, merely a few short weeks of typing.
Anything else, I have learned through On-the-Job
training or through adult ed courses. So, even
though this course touched on the highlights, it
seemed comprehensive to someone like me. I
learned a lot.
David Roundy was excellent. He brought us all
out of our shells during afternoon lessons. He
coached us on getting our resumes looking really
professional, and helping us pinpoint our
knowledge, skills, and abilities. I’m not sure who
coordinated our job site visits, but David
accompanied us on all of them and asked the
pertinent questions that some of us couldn’t think of. He gave us pointers on the job interview
process. He has that quality all really good
teachers have: he provides the spark that ignites a
student to want to go on and learn about a
subject.
This program brought in some other experts as
well. Liz Sylvester, a life coach, is a great
speaker and she helped us ―find ourselves‖, or at
least our personality types. We hope the Adult Ed
program makes further use of her talents.
Victoria Ryan, from the CareerCenter, provided
us with many leads and resources.
I think this program has been so worthwhile and
has given us all a helping hand in getting back
into the workplace. I’m so glad I was able to participate.

22 The Learning Link
By Elizabeth Potter
An amazing phenomenon that never
ceases to amaze me about adult
education is that when people of
different ages, customs and beliefs
come together with the common goal of
improving themselves, what is often the
result is lifetime bonds and friendships.
I regularly witness in my classes people
who might not agree about politics or
clothing styles, folks who might roll
their eyes at each others’ choices in
music and movies, but will still go out of their way to
help fellow classmates when they stumble.
Why is this? Wouldn’t it be easier to just focus on
meeting your own goals and not wasting your precious
time and energy on reaching out to someone you have
nothing in common with? I think the magic
ingredients that are sprinkled on adult ed classrooms
like pixie dust are passion and hope.
The beginning
People often walk through the doors here at Wiscasset
Adult Ed because they’ve come to a crossroads in
their lives, and they’ve decided to take a risk and step
down the road of change — to not give up on their
dreams, and to open their hearts and minds to all the
possibilities out there in life. These people have not
given up on the crazy idea that it just might be
possible to be comfortable, even happy, with your
life’s work. These same people, whether they know it
or not, are choosing not to buy into what others all
around them are settling for – a life half lived, a life
that never explores what could have been.
When you have a classroom full of folks that have all
taken this radical leap of passion and hope, magic
happens. People end up wanting to share their stories
– where they’ve been in life so far and what they’ve
learned, where they see themselves headed and what
From a Teacher
their deepest dreams are. In this
environment of sharing, people
realize that — petty differences
aside —we’re all pretty similar. We
all want to find satisfying, enjoyable
work and to improve the quality of
our own and our loved ones’ lives.
When you set out on this journey of
self-discovery and improvement with
a group of like-minded fellow
travelers, you learn pretty quickly that
everyone can improve his or her individual chances of
success dramatically by helping each other.
The Change
Perhaps one of your classmates doesn’t have reliable
transportation to class, so you offer to swing by and
pick her up in the morning, and it ends up this same
person is a math wiz and she’s willing to tutor you
when you fall behind studying fractions. Or maybe an
older student whose children are all grown and who
has plenty of time on her hands might offer to baby sit
a single dad’s child three hours weekly in exchange
for help navigating her new computer that she feels
intimidated by. The possibilities are endless.
The Result
I believe the more people you tell your dreams to the
more chances you have for synchronicity (or
unexplainable lucky breaks that come your way). If,for example, everyone in class knows your dream is to
someday run your own retail women’s clothing store,
then when a classmate’s uncle’s cousin’s sister is
looking for an assistant in her newly opened, funky
women’s clothing store in Portland, don’t be surprised
if you find out way before the ad even gets a chance to
be listed in the paper. Some people would call this
luck; I think it has more to do with putting your
dreams out there in the world like seeds. You just
might be surprised where beautiful possibilities comeup and begin to grow.

Your Input
How big is your company? If you live in this area,
chances are, it’s pretty small. In fact, 68% of the
businesses in Lincoln County have fewer than five
employees. Small business is definitely the rule
around here, not the exception.
Small Business
Being a sole proprietor or working in a setting with
only one or two other colleagues can feel isolating at
times. Freelancers, independent contractors, and
consultants often work from home very productively,
but miss out on the benefits of professional
interaction, such as the synergy and growth that comes
from collaborating with others in their field.
If you work in a small business, you probably wear many hats, constantly juggling many roles, with
dwindling resources and worries about a second
recession on the horizon. Odds are, you did not go to
business school or receive training in
entrepreneurship, and have figured out things on your
own or through the school of hard knocks.
The Brainstorm
Wouldn’t it be great if you had someplace local to go
that offered you the kind of support you need to make
your business more
profitable? Imagine
having some scheduled
quiet time in a private
office where you can
hammer out some of
your ideas. Think about
what it would be like to
attend workshops on
topics that are relevant
to your line of work, and
discuss the latest trends
in your industry with like-minded professionals.
We would like to make this dream a reality through
the development of the Wiscasset area Business
Learning Center. Your input is essential as we get this
project underway.
Picture the Business Learning Center
Here’s what the Business Learning Center would look
like. Workshop series and classes will be offered in a
variety of topics, such as social media marketing,
accounting principles, stellar customer service,
software applications, and more. Included in the fee
for these classes is a block of time in a shared or
private office space for you to work on your projects,
collaborate with colleagues, or meet with clients.
Google ―co-working spaces‖ and you’ll get an ideaabout the benefits of having part-time office space.
Half of the office space will be designated as the quiet
zone for productive individualized work, while the
other half will be designated as the hive. In addition to
workshops, classes, and guest speakers there, you can
take the opportunity to tackle projects together, learn
from others in your profession, or socialize and
network around the water cooler.
Your Input
Here’s your chance to shape the development of the
Business Learning Center. There is a survey online at
our website at www.MyAdultEd.org, with links also
pointing to it from the sites of local partners, such as
the Wiscasset Area Chamber of Commerce,
University College Bath/Brunswick, and the Small
Business Development Center. The survey should
only take about 10 minutes to complete. As a token of
our appreciation for taking the time to give us your
feedback, completed surveys will be entered into a
drawing to win a free trip to Quebec on our AutumnAdventure on page 8.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to provide
us with your input!
