It’s a harder job than it may seem to be, but it’s also a job full of joy.
Here are some of the criteria used at LCM for choosing the songs we sing:
Season: Hymns during Epiphany emphasize Jesus as the light of the world, while Lenten hymns may emphasize reflection on sin. Easter hymns celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, while hymns for the day of Pentecost rejoice in the coming of the Holy Spirit.
Theme: Hymns complement the theme of the weekly Scripture readings.
Sing-ability: Some wonderful hymn lyrics seem to be paired with difficult or unfamiliar tunes. In these cases, our congregation may sing the powerful and profound lyrics to a more familiar tune.
Affection: Certain songs just touch our hearts.
Variety: Affirming our connection with God’s holy people in every time and place, we strive to include songs that come from both ancient and modern times, and from many lands.
Theology: Lutheran Christians emphasize God’s gracious action in choosing us, and in giving us faith to respond to God’s invitation. The hymns we sing in worship emphasize praise to God rather than human action.
Repetition: Some hymns that may be less familiar can ‘grow on us’ if we sing them a few times.
(In accordance with church tradition, and to aid our devotion, our hymnody will not include Alleluias during
the season of Lent, which begins on February 26).
Psalm 96:1-2
O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.
February 26—Ash Wednesday Joel 2:1-2, 12-17 Psalm 51:1-17 Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21
March 1—Lent 1 Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7 Psalm 32 Romans 5:12-19 Matthew 4:1-11
March 8—Lent 2 Genesis 12:1-4a Psalm 121 Romans 4:1-5, 13-17 John 3:1-17
March 15—Lent 3 Exodus 17:1-7 Psalm 95 Romans 5:1-11 John 4:5-42
March 22—Lent 4 1 Samuel 16:1-13 Psalm 23 Ephesians 5:8-14 John 9:1-41
March 29—Lent 5 Ezekiel 37:1-14 Psalm 130 Romans 8:6-11 John 11:1-45
Do you ever wonder how hymns are chosen for our Sunday worship?

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS STARTS on MARCH 8th!!!!
Fun Fact: It is a common misconception that Benjamin
Franklin ‘invented’ daylight savings time. He suggested in
a satirical essay in spring 1784 that Parisians change their
sleep schedules to save money on candles… The real
‘inventor’ - George Hudson, an entomologist from New
Zealand, suggested changing the time to have more
sunlight in the evenings in 1895. Source: https://www.fi.edu/benjamin-franklin/daylight-savings-time

News of the World by Paulette Jiles is the Book Group’s selection for March.
In 1870 Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd an elderly widower is traveling through northern Texas giving live news readings to paying audiences. In Wichita Falls he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan, Johanna, whose family was killed by Indian raiders to her relatives in San Antonio. Their 400 mile journey is difficult and dangerous as well as challenging because Johanna’s time living with the Indians has made her seem “uncivilized” to the Captain.
News of the World is a work of historical fiction that explores trust, responsibility, honor and family. The LCM Book Group will discuss News of the World on Tuesday, March 17 @ 5:30pm at the Well-Read Moose bookstore in Riverstone.
For more information contact Kristine Wold, 208-660-4410.
Notes from the Treasurer…
The 2020 Budget is another growth budget.
This means that in order for the committees
and ministries to accomplish their goals we
need to bring in more money than last year.
Prayfully consider how you can respond to
the needs of the ministries of our church.
Please let me know if you have any questions
about the Budget or Financial Reports which
are in a binder in the Library. Copies may be
requested from the office.

FAITHFUL INNOVATION
Faithful Innovation is a new way of doing church.
A deeper relationship with God, our neighbors, & each other.
It is not about telling God what we want. It is not about telling each other what to do. It is about listening, being curious about what God is up to: in our church, in our lives, in our neighborhood and then joining in. It is not about getting people into the building; it is about getting us out of our buildings. It is about experimenting. It is about sharing what we have learned. It is not goal oriented, except the goal of trying to determine what God is up to. Some congregations have been doing Faithful Innovation for years, some have been at it for a year or two, some are just starting. I got excited about it during our training in Phoenix, in January. It made me hopeful and ready to see what God has in store for us. But to participate LCM needs a guiding team of 4 to 8 people.
Is God calling you to be involved in a new way of being church? Please pray about it. Talk to me.

Does your marriage need a 30,000 mile checkup?
How much time do you and your spouse spend talking about your relationship? Do you know the difference between a Relationship Issue and Roommate Issue? What is your spouses love language? Do you tend to argue about the same
things over and over again? Maybe it is time to get away and consider some alternatives, take time to pray, see things from a different perspective.
If you are curious, call Pastor Bob (208-446-5206). I would need 8 couples to do a 2 night retreat at Lutherhaven.
Thrivent Choice Dollars If you have a Thrivent Financial policy or investment you may have Choice Dollars to allocate. These “dollars” are money you can donate to a 501(c) 3 organization… like Lutheran Church of the Master! Wherever you choose to donate those Choice Dollars, be sure to do it before they expire.

Message from the Director of Youth & Family Ministry Beckie Jenicek | (208) 755-0995 | rjenicek@gmail.com
I love my backyard. It brings me joy. It brings me peace. It brings excitement, and anticipation, and fulfillment and comfort and any number of other very good things. I love it in every season and whatever season it is currently in is always my favorite. Winter brings rest. There is nothing to do but watch and wait and rest until spring comes. Spring brings renewal. It is such fun to rake away the winter debris and see the small shoots starting to poke through. Every day brings more growth and more anticipation and gratitude as I make the rounds morning and evening to see how everything has grown and changed. Summer brings the most beautiful and best of the flowers along with the joy
of watching the birds and the honeybees and the butterflies. Fall brings a sense of satisfaction that everything was beautiful as the pace once again slows down for the period of winter rest. All of that does not come without a cost. There is the physical cost of getting out there and preparing or weeding or fertilizing or watering or doing whatever is needed to have the beauty. Some days that isn’t fun. I hurt every single day and getting out and raking and weeding and digging only makes me hurt more. I know the reward of all the work will be worth the pain, but it isn’t fun. There is a time cost. There are days when I would rather do something else, but I know that if I don’t get out there and work then all the previous work will be ruined and there will be nothing to enjoy. There is a financial cost. There are things that I don’t get to do that I would like to because my priority is making certain that I have what I need to keep the yard looking lovely. I think my faith is like that. It brings me all the good things like peace and comfort and joy but it also comes at a cost. If I want to enjoy the things that having a relationship with God brings then I need to take the time to work on that relationship. This means I don’t always get to do other things I might want to or spend money on other things I might want to. We all set our priorities around what we think needs to be done to make our lives complete. My prayer is that all of us will want to pay the cost of keeping our faith strong.

Alternative Gift Giving –
All Year Long
We all have people that are hard to shop for, whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, graduation, or thank you gift. Donate to missions instead of buying a gift. Using the ELCA Good Gifts Catalog (available on the literature rack in at the main entrance) you select items to give which support numerous ministries. You can mail in the order form found in the catalog or go online to elca.org/goodgifts. In addition, you can request cards to give to the recipient. When ordering online you are able to print out a card or request they send you a card.
Another option is to donate to ELCA World Hunger. Your gifts “help our church creatively and courageously work toward a just world where all are fed.” Simply write “ELCA World Hunger” in the memo section of your check or on your envelope. We send it on for you.

Living the Promise - A Lifelong Approach to Faith Formation
In place of our Northwest Intermountain Synod Assembly this spring we will be holding three one-day Synod gatherings spread across our beautiful territory.
Who Can Come: Your congregation/ministry will assemble a group of individuals willing to learn, laugh, and work together. If possible, we suggest you send a group including "golden age" participants in their retirement, wage earning participants in mid-life, young adults just starting out, and youth of any age. The workshop is very interactive, so we'll hold even the youngest participant's attention. Working together, you learn from and about each other. Congregations/ministries are encouraged to bring as large of a group as possible.
Check out the Synod Website for more information!
Two volunteers are needed to represent
