TROPOSPHERE

STRATOSPHEREMESOSPHERE

THERMOSPHEREEXOSPHERE

It is the lowest layer of the earth's atmosphere and site of all weather on the earth.

TROPOPAUSE - separates the troposphere from the stratosphere, and on the bottom by the surface of the earth. The troposphere is wider at the equator (16 km/10 mi) than at the poles (8 km/5 mi).

STRATOSPHEREIt is almost completely free of clouds or other forms of weather.

In the lower portion of the stratosphere, the temperature remains nearly constant with height, but in the upper portion the temperature increases rapidly with height because of absorption of sunlight by ozone.

OZONE Also known as the trioxygen

Ozone Layer in the upper atmosphere is beneficial, preventing damaging ultraviolet light from reaching the Earth's surface.

Stratopause - (formerly Mesopeak) is the level of the atmosphere which is the boundary between two layers, stratosphere and the mesosphere.

In the stratosphere the temperature increases with altitude, and the stratopause is the section where a maximum in the temperature occurs.

Stratopause

MESOSPHEREIt is the layer of the Earth’s atmosphere that is directly above the sratosphere and directly below the thermosphere. In the mesosphere temperature decreases with increasing height.

The upper boundary of the mesosphere is the mesopause

MESOPAUSE - which can be the coldest naturally occurring place on Earth with temperatures below 130 K.

NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS - These clouds are strange because they form much, much higher up than any other type of cloud.

SPRITES – Odd types of lightening in mesosphere.

THERMOSPHEREThe thermosphere is directly above the mesosphere and below the exosphere.

The boundary between the thermosphere and the exosphere is the thermopause.

Thermopause - is the atmospheric boundary of Earth's energy system, located at the top of the thermosphere.

Scientists call the ionosphere an extension of the thermosphere. So technically, the ionosphere is not another atmospheric layer.

IONOSPHERE

Aurora - is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude regions, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere).

AURORA BOREALIS

EXOSPHERE

This is the region where atoms and molecules escape into space.

The outermost region where the temperature greatly varies.

ACTIVITY 11.) The layer of atmosphere also referred to as weathersphere is called:

a.) troposphere c.) ionosphereb.) stratosphere d.) mesosphere

2.) The layer of the atmosphere where long radio communication is made possible is the:

a.) troposphere c.) mesosphereb.) stratosphere d.) ionosphere

3.) The layer of the atmosphere where AURORA LIGHTS are formed is the:a.) troposphere c.) mesosphereb.) stratosphere d.) ionosphere

4.) The layer of the atmosphere which protects life on Earth by absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.

a.) troposphere c.) thermosphereb.) ozone d.) ionosphere

5.) The space shuttle and the International Space Station both orbit Earth within the _______________.Thermosphere or Ionosphere

1.) Odd types of lightening in mesosphere

2.) Clouds that formed in mesosphere
