A MAN was airlifted out of the Beaver Lake campground on the Labour Day long weekend after a quad accident, according to witnesses at the campground.
An air ambulance landed at the campground on Aug. 31 transporting one
man out of the area. Witness reports say the man was driving 4x4 machines with friends and family when he lost control of his vehicle and was injured.
His status is unknown.

e District of Lake Country is going to ask the Ministry of High-ways to investigate whether they can install barriers to separate the north- and south-bound
lanes of Highway 97 be-tween Lake Country and Kelowna.
e move came af-ter Lake Country re chief Steve Windsor’s bi-annual report to Lake Country council on Sept. 2. Windsor reported that
there was a substantial increase in serious ac-cidents his department has responded to on the highway between Lake Country and Kelowna, pointing to a continued increase in tra c volume as one likely cause.
And Windsor says the installation of no-post cement barriers to separ-ate the north/south lanes could do a lot to reduce serious accidents such as head-on crashes.
“(No post barriers) have de nitely alleviat-
ed a lot of the calls for the new stretch of High-way 97,” said Wind-sor. “We’d like the min-istry to look at install-ing them from Beaver Lake Road south to Ke-lowna. I have experience with the Island High-
way and the accident call volume on that—espe-cially for head-on colli-sions—decreased hugely when they installed the no-post barriers.”

After struggling to nd members for two of its three re halls for much of the past year, it appears the Lake Coun-try Fire Department may have found a few new re-cruits.
e Oyama and Carr’s Landing re halls in Lake Country have both been running with low numbers of paid-on call re ghters but there has been some movement in the number of volunteers stepping forward to help
the department. Fire chief Steve
Windsor said they are hoping some new ap-plicants will be able to ll some positions in Oyama and Carr’s Land-ing that have been vacant for the past year.
“We’ve struggled over the past 12 months in Carr’s Landing and Oyama with member-ship but we have had some good results with some of our advertising,” he said. “We are hold-
ing tryouts for what we anticipate will be six to eight positions that we want to ll.”
Last weekend poten-tial re ghters were put through a series of train-ing exercises as the Lake Country department be-gins the process of trying to ll the positions.
Windsor said they had 56 people apply for positions with the de-partment. While the ma-jority of the applicants are from Win eld, the
two outlying stations in Oyama and Carr’s Land-ing have also had a few people step forward.
“We’ve got seven ap-plications for Oyama and two from Carr’s Landing,” said Windsor.
In Lake Country, re- ghters are paid-on call, meaning they are paid when they respond to a re call but perform other duties on a volun-teer basis.

ed to the sheer volume of tra c that ows on Highway 97 every day as one reason for an in-crease in accident calls his department re-sponded to in the rst half of this year.
“At the north end of Lake Country the new highway, I think, has cor-rected a lot of the prob-lems we had with vol-ume of tra c, but you still have that volume of tra c to the south,” he said. “When you get that volume and you make a mistake there is not much ability to correct yourself.”
Windsor said the no-post barriers do cause some access issues but he says it would be worth it for the Highways Min-istry to investigate to see if something can be done to improve safety.
Coun. Penny Gam-bell said it’s concerning to see so many accidents happening on the lo-cal highway adding that
the opening of the new highway has changed the location of the acci-dents happening in Lake Country.
“It just seems like we had a number over the summer and it’s certain-ly a concern,” said Gam-bell. “We have the new highway and that seems
to have taken care of ac-cidents at the north end of Lake Country. Why is it, all of a sudden, we are getting these accidents at the south end?”
e increase in motor vehicle accidents, as well as more structure res, highlighted the rst six months of the year for
Lake Country’s re de-partment.
Windsor said while it was a fairly average start to the year for Lake Country’s protective ser-vices department, there were some trends over the rst six months of 2014.
“Structure res were
the biggest increase,” said Windsor. “In the rst six months of 2013 we had one (structure re) and at this point in 2014 we have had seven.”
Meanwhile, Wind-sor said the rst six months of the year saw the re department add to its arsenal of re ght-
ing weapons with the ac-quisition of a new inter-face re engine for Carr’s Landing. at gives the department two engines capable of ghting res in interface areas where homes are built in the forested areas.
“We’ve had very good success with both en-
gines, in fact one of them was over assisting West Kelowna for three days with their large interface re,” he said.
Lake Country also re-ceived a new boat that has the ability to aid re crews from the water or work on rescue calls. e regional district-pur-chased watercraft is bet-ter equipped than its pre-decessor, said Windsor.
“It replaced a 20-year-old boat,” he said. “ is one is considerably big-ger and a lot more ca-pable in rough water. We’ve used it on a num-ber of occasions to evacuate people or to spot for aircraft that are loading water.”
In total, calls that the Lake Country Fire De-partment responded to were nearly the same from the previous year with 390 calls in 2014 as compared to 383 during the same period in 2013.

THE District of Lake Country will be asking the provincial government to in-stall no-post barriers on Highway 97 between Kelowna and Lake Country to help avoid head-on collisions along the highway. ere were more accidents on the local stretch of highway in the past six months than in previous years.

When Ron Volk stepped forward and began organizing the Lake Country Custom and Classic Car Show four years ago, it was just a shadow of what it has become.
Volk, 71, was a car show regular with his 1970 Chevelle SS, trav-eling around the prov-ince and showing o his restored beauty.
At the time the Lake Country show was just two years old and organ-izers were not going to continue with it.
But Volk and his wife Kathy decided they would jump in and take the reins.
Over the past four years the show has grown from about 100 cars to nearly 400 this year and has raised close to $20,000 for the Lake
Country Food Bank.“I’ve been into clas-
sic cars pretty much my whole life,” said Volk. “ is show is well re-spected now. People are coming from all over be-cause they know its a good show, probably one of the best in B.C. We had cars from Saskatch-ewan, Alberta, B.C. and Washington State this year.”
As the show has grown over the years, adding entertainment, food vendors and more classic vehicles all the time, Volk found him-self stretched thin. is year he enlisted the help of the Lake Country Chamber of Commerce to run one of the two days of the show and he’s decided to hand it over to the chamber full-time to help push it further into the future.
“ e thing is, the
show has gotten so big that it is too hard for two people to manage,” said Volk on Friday, before leaving to attend another car show. “I have been looking around for some help and the cham-ber has a committee to
bring in more big events to Lake Country so it’s a good t. I will be staying on as an adviser.”
Volk has been a xture in Lake Country since moving to the area when he was 15. He attended George Elliot Second-
ary before beginning a long career in the for-est industry, rst in Ke-lowna and then in Sal-mon Arm.
After retiring about 10 years ago, Volk had more time to tour his vintage Chevelle around,
as well as to jump into the organizing of the lo-cal car show. e par-ents of four grown kids, Volk and Kathy did the majority of the organiz-ing for the show the past
four years. He says it’s been a
great run.“I remember seeing
it grow every year,” said Volk of the car show. “To get to the point it is now…I’m really proud of it because, over the four years, we’ve donat-ed $20,000 to the food bank.
“It’s been a lot of work. It turned into pretty much a full-time job. We are getting older and we have a lot of things to do yet.”
So while the couple gets set to take on a less-er role, Volk vows to keep on with the organizing and make sure the mo-mentum keeps going.
“I want to see it con-tinue and be success-ful,” he said. “ ere will be a lot of hard work and I will be there to advise them along the way.”newsroom@lakecountrynews.net

A PBS documentary on the late Nat “King” Cole featured Nature Boy, a song which rode the Hit Parade charts for an amazing 15 weeks in 1948. e song faded into the background for a video clip from an interview with the song’s
composer, eden ah-bez—a man who dis-dained capital letters and most of what was con-
sidered civilized life in the 1940s. He was a hip-pie, 20 years before hip-pies became a baby boomer fad.
As I recall that inter-view (I wasn’t taking notes at the time) ahbez said, “I’d had the words for a long time, and one day suddenly the mel-ody came to me out of the mist in the Califor-nia mountains.”
Musicologists suggest it actually came to him out of Antonin Dvorak’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A, Opus 81, written about 60 years earlier.
e lyrics of Nature Boy are deceptively sim-ple. And short. Just 74 words, broken into 12 lines. ey end with this piece of wisdom:

We want to hear your
opinions on issues going
on in our communityThe B.C.
Teachers’ Federation’s
latest demand, for bind-ing arbitration on select-ed pocketbook issues of its members, is going nowhere.
is follows months of the union’s insist-ence on mediation. First a B.C. Supreme Court judge met with both sides and walked away.
en the BCTF’s preferred choice, Vince Ready, agreed that medi-ation won’t x the cur-rent version of the mess he last examined in 2007.
BCTF president Jim Iker announced the arbi-tration gambit on Friday, in one of the webcasts he uses to rally the union’s exhausted member-ship. Education Minister Peter Fassbender replied that with ve minutes’ notice to the govern-ment’s chief negotiator and lacking speci cs on what would be subject to arbitration, the proposal would forfeit the govern-ment’s mandate to con-
trol costs.“ is government will
not raise taxes in order to provide a settlement to one union that does not re ect what the other public sector has done,” Fassbender said.
In short, there will be a negotiated settlement, eventually. e union chose to begin the strike, and now must nd a way to end it.
e government’s position in this dispute is unlike any of the many that preceded it. And it points the way to an evo-lution of education that cannot be stopped.
e announcement of a $40-a-day payment for days lost during a fall strike for children under 13 was greeted with scorn by the BCTF and its echo chambers. Par-ents won’t be bribed, they want school, not daycare, it’s an insult, went the re-frain.
Before the rst week of the fall strike was over, nearly two thirds of eli-gible parents had en-rolled, faced with pick-ets at their schools and real and mounting child care and tutoring costs. e union executive, col-lecting their hefty sal-aries while teachers do without even token strike pay, said members who are parents should refuse the money.
Some B.C. teach-ers have begun adver-tising tutoring services online. With distance learning and other online education options ex-panding in all 60 public school districts, the digit-al revolution is unfolding quickly.
e B.C. government made a couple of an-nouncements in April, one about moving to digital versions of text-books and another about a digital merger of 1,600 school libraries with public and post-second-ary schools. Growth of options accelerates.
Largely drowned out by the noise of 1970s-style industrial labour strife, the B.C. public school curriculum is being refashioned for this new age. Among its goals is to “allow teach-ers and students the exibility to personal-ize their learning ex-perience to better meet each student’s individual strengths and needs.”
One of B.C.’s early models for self-directed learning is om-as Haney secondary in Maple Ridge, where sen-ior high students are ex-pected to make their own way through course work, learning to manage their own time.
It was here that the
rst couple of Grade 12 students showed up last week to begin mak-ing up for lost time from the strike that set in last spring. Self-directed study has become a crash course.
Private schools are also swamped with ap-plications from Grade 12 students looking for par-ticular courses they will need by next year.
In the short term, Fassbender says the lost strike days will likely have to be restored to the school schedule.
“Do you put it on at the end of the year? Do you take it out of spring break? Do you take it out of Christmas holidays? My sta are looking at all of the options,” Fass-bender said.
In the longer term, the whole factory model of school is on the way out.

loved in return.” e wisdom lies in the
reciprocity—to love, and be loved in return.
I look, sometimes, at unlikely couples. I won-der what she sees in him, what he sees in her. From my perspec-tive, not looks. Nor ex-ceptional talent. But I’m asking the wrong ques-tion. She loves him be-cause he loves her. And he loves her, because she loves him. at’s all that matters.
And the circle of love goes around and around, each act of loving res-onating with the other’s love….
Conversely, it’s hard to love someone who doesn’t also love you.
 e medieval con-
cept of “courtly love” ro-manticized falling in love with someone who didn’t love you, who barely knew you existed, who didn’t belong to your so-cial class. Love at a dis-tance. Perhaps at a safe distance, a love that you were never expected to live up to.
I would call that in-fatuation. Or idealism. Less kindly, lust, or per-haps just envy—I want something I can’t have.
Other words might apply as substitutes for love in Nature Boy’s formula. Respect, ac-ceptance, inclusion—they’re all reciprocal. If I want respect, I must re-spect the other person—whether or not I support his politics, her lifestyle.
If I feel contempt for someone else, they’re
hardly likely to admire me in return.
Reciprocity lies at the heart of most religious teachings. e Golden Rule appears in almost all religions, with vary-ing wordings. e Chris-tian version says, “Treat others as you would want to be treated yourself.”
Jesus condensed the laws of Moses to two principles (borrowed
from a verse in Levit-icus, much the way eden ahbez borrowed from Dvorak): to love God, and to love your neigh-bour as yourself.
Unfortunately, most study of this text detours into a legalistic point—who is my neighbour?—rather than focusing on its call for reciprocity.
What you give is what you receive. As you re-
ceive, you give back. at’s the essence of gratitude.
Reciprocity lies at the heart of conversation. Of hospitality. Of friend-ship. Indeed, of all so-cial structures—of which love is simply the most intimate.

One of the con-cerns I hear about from con-
stituents is the import-ance of having a family doctor.
Attracting doc-tors to rural commun-ities has been an issue for years in British Col-umbia and indeed across North America. In our province, an estimated 176,000 people are cur-rently looking for a family doctor to call their own.
Recently, I have been corresponding with a group called the Central Okanagan Division of Family Practice.
One of the exciting developments that I’d like to share with you is the work being done by this extraordinary group.
is group, a not for pro t society governed by local family phys-icians, has a mandate to improve the health sys-tem through the experi-ence and voices of family physicians and their pa-tients.
ere are three phys-icians who have ex-pressed an interest in re-
locating to the Central Okanagan. ese doctors know about the openings and have been told about the many opportunities that await them in Lake Country.
Operating family practices are major
undertakings. ey are not immune to the pres-sures that a ect all areas of the workforce. People retire, move or change their professional focus such as going into many of the teaching positions available in the province.
We’re facing that situation now in Lake Country as two phys-icians have moved on, leaving opportunities for new doctors to set up in our region.
e group I have been corresponding with, the Central Okanagan Division, tells me they understand importance of recruitment and re-tention of family phys-icians.
ey are currently working with local and provincial resources to
develop a robust recruit-ment, including the A GP for Me initiative.
Created by the Gen-eral Practice Services Committee, A GP for Me is funded by our gov-ernment as well as the doctors of B.C.
e goal of the initia-tive is to make it easi-er for doctors to care for their patients e cient-ly—enabling them to ac-cept more patients—and to improve primary care, including a way to help people looking for doc-tors in their hometown.
In Lake Country, the Central Okanagan Div-ision will o er the A GP for Me initiative to help all practices in our re-gion. is initiative will work towards improve-ments in work ow and
help modernize how of- ces are operated.

e initiative will also provide education for patients to help all of us make our visits to the doctor’s o ce more ef-fective and e cient. Having a strong, healthy practice includes patient participation and under-standing.
Hopefully, these ef-forts will enable Lake Country to recruit enough physicians to re-place those who are re-tiring.
I nd it encouraging
that this work is being done. People want to be able to form an attach-ment with their family doctor. It’s one of the most important profes-sional relationships we have over the course of our lives and often be-comes integrated into fu-ture generations of our families.
We’re all in this together. Our doctors and their local organiza-tion need the help of the community.
Only by working together will we be able to strengthen our health care system.

A Great Leap Forward column. (Aug. 13 Lake Country Calendar)
Tom Fletcher is con-fused about the Ministry of Agriculture’s consul-tation, which features a public survey. He mis-
takenly says it shows that changes in last spring’s ALR bill “have little or nothing to do with ex-clusions” of farmland from the ALR.
at bill, which made exclusions easier in 90% of the ALR (“Zone 2”), is now law. It’s no long-
er a current focus, in con-trast to the survey about ALR regulations, which was open until August 22. e simple reason the survey doesn’t mention the bill or ALR exclu-sions is that they’re an-other matter.
It’s also illogical for
Fletcher to imply that those who wanted con-sultation on the previ-ous matter would oppose the current consultation. If anything, many want more of it.
To top o confusion with bad taste, Fletch-er mocks MLA Lana
Popham’sv photo and bi-zarrely ties a survey ques-tion to Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward, which cost millions of lives.

A Lake Country councillor says he’s un-happy with a Band-Aid solution to a change in an intersection at the corner of Pelmewash Parkway and Oyama Road.
Owen Dickie says the change from a four-way stop at the intersection to a two-way stop with
tra c along Pelme-wash Parkway having a through road is a safety concern.
“ is certainly appears to be a signi cant safe-ty risk in our commun-ity,” said Dickie. “As well, I feel the highway had evolved into a division of our community which the highway relocation
and the four-way inter-section was beginning to correct.”
Dickie and Min-istry of Highways o -cials met at the site of the intersection to discuss matters late last month but the Oyama ward councillor says the prov-ince is going ahead with the changes despite his concerns.
In a letter to Dickie, the ministry said it will be installing speed reader
boards north- and south-bound as Pelmewash Way approaches Oyama Road, while zebra cross walk warnings are going to be installed on Pelme-wash at the north and south crossings of the parkway.
Dickie says while he did meet with the min-istry and was told that the district was consulted before the change, it ap-pears to him that the de-cision had already been
made, despite local con-cerns.
“ e engineer re-peatedly referred to re-specting local input but it was more than ob-vious that the decision had been made and there were no plans to reverse it,” said Dickie. “I am hopeful that the pub-lic concerns have been noticed and I will con-tinue to work towards returning to a four-way stop.”
Councillor says 2-way stop unsafenews
As summer holi-days continue for some students thanks to the on-going teacher’s strike and lock-out, there are many other students who are returning to pri-vate schools by either public or private trans-portation, as well as on bikes, rollerblades, skate-boards and foot.
Police say that, al-though the public school system has not returned to its regular class sched-ule, there are schools in the Okanagan that are in session and those school speed zone limits apply.
Remembering what school zone speeds are being enforced can be tricky, so the RCMP rec-ommend motorists re-search schools in their local areas that may be in session.
If a private school or independent school is open, then school zone speed limits do apply. And the nes for speed-ing in a school zone are steep—$193 to $256.
And it will cost you $167 for failing to stop for a school bus, or a pedestrian, passing a vehicle stopped for a pedestrian or disobeying and crossing guard.
