A Lafayette for our times
-his ambitious com8le2 and im8ortant work is unlike anything else in the vast body o/ La/ayette
literature. &or a start as its subtitle suggests it is not in the normal sense a biogra8hy. 9hatonce would have been called La/ayetteEs I/ormative yearsI are dis8atched in a do)en or so lines
o/ a two8age biogra8hical summary contained in the 0ntroduction. 1either are we o//ered the
customary 8en 8icture or character sketch o/ the subect though he does /eature in many o/ the
thirtyone contem8orary 8aintings or 8rints which accom8any the te2t. As a result when at the
beginning o/ Cha8ter One the nineteenyear old maruis lands in the 1ew 9orld to serve in
George 9ashingtonEs army he is almost as un/amiliar to us as he must have been to his
American hosts.
1or is the book a study o/ his 8olitical li/e. -he high 8oints o/ a 8ublic career s8anning nearly
si2ty yearshis involvement in res8ectively the American and &rench #evolutions and the
#evolution o/ 3D7< in &ranceare each the subect o/ a cha8ter. Sur8risingly his active su88ort
at a sa/e distance /or the /ailed Polish nationalist rising o/ 3D7 as the o88ortunity not so much /or an account o/ the e2traordinary
rece8tion given him by the American 8eo8le on his s8iritual homecoming as /or a com8arison o/
La/ayette and Ale2is de -ocueville as inter8reters and sha8ers o/ an emerging American national
identity.
&aced with such a 8u))ling and a88arently disointed collection o/ essays the cynical orin

historiogra8hical circumstances6 that is either an attem8t to 8lug ga8s le/t by other writers or
else a case o/ sim8ly /ollowing where the sources lead. Certainly the overall concentration o/ the
book on the 8ost3D?;%
and the 8rominence given to La/ayetteEs dealings with women intellectuals are 8artly usti/ied in
the /ormer terms. 0n /airness though it has to be said that "ramer is as much concerned to
render the better known as8ects o/ the La/ayette story less /amiliar as the reverse. Probably the
e2igencies o/ his sources have had a greater in/luence on the /inal sha8e o/ the work. Although
issues surrounding the selection and handling o/ source material are given remarkably little
coverage it is sa/e to in/er that "ramerEs heavy reliance on La/ayetteEs corres8ondence contained
in several collections o/ 8rivate 8a8ers has much to do both with his general 8reoccu8ation with
La/ayetteEs /riendshi8s and his choice o/ those to /eature in the bookEs cast list. +ost cons8icuous
among the absentees is Adrienne the wi/e he married at si2teen who a/ter his ca8ture by
Austrian troo8s chose to share his im8risonment and whose 8ortrait we are told he worshi8ed
every day a/ter her death in 3D

'ow /ar does the book succeed in this enormously ambitious undertakingK 0n my view the
rehabilitation o/ La/ayette is no more than a uali/ied success. 0ndeed it can be obected that the
e2ercise is not as necessary as "ramer maintains. 'is claim that La/ayette has been badly treated
by modern historians involves a 8artial reading o/ the American historiogra8hy. &irstly it rests on
associating Louis Gottschalk the greatest /igure in the twentiethcentury scholarshi8 o/
La/ayette with his detractors. -rue the 8icture which emerges /rom his various works is o/ the
Iwarts and allI variety but to attribute this to the malign in/luence o/ Ithe structuring ironic
assum8tions o/ modern historiogra8hyI $8. =% rather than the obligations o/ critical scholarshi8 is
surely o8en to uestion. Secondly it ignores/or this 8ur8osethe contribution o/ "ramerEs own
mentor and since GottschalkEs death the leading living authority Stanley 0d)erda who has
consistently re8resented La/ayette as a uniuely moral /orce in 8olitics $see /or e2am8le his
essay ICharacter as !estiny6 A 1ew Look at La/ayetteEs CareerI in La "rance et l'esprit de 05:

Com8ared to 0d)erda "ramer o//ers a broader more balanced and alsomerci/ullymore
restrained de/ence. But its very moderation is a source o/ weakness as well as strength. 'is
argument that La/ayette was a more e//ective 8olitical actor than widely su88osed is made in 8art
through directing attention /rom the moments when he was at the centre o/ the 8olitical stage to
his work behind the scenes /or an endless list o/ civil rights cam8aigns. et even here "ramer is
/orced to admit in terms o/ tangible results that his record was not terribly im8ressive. 9riting
s8eci/ically o/ his e//orts on behal/ o/ 0talian liberals in 8rison and e2ile he acknowledges that
ILa/ayetteEs 8ublic cam8aign ... met with the small successes and large disa88ointments that
characterised so many o/ his 8olitical causesI $8. 3?F%.
On the largest and historically most im8ortant o/ these disa88ointments "ramer can do no little
more than 8lead mitigating circumstances. #ather than the result o/ a lack o/ 8olitical skill or
