Dr. Debacker –   In what world does this make sense?   14 – 8  = X   Take the 10 out of the 14 – and get 4.   Now subtract the 10 -8 = 2 Then add the 2 back with the 4 you took out of 14 You get the answer 6.   These are the instructions my niece in 1st grade follows to solve the 14 - 8 = 6.   This is how the teachers at her (redacted) school have to teach math.  It is nonsensical. It has no

forward progression -- i.e. it will serve them good in the next level class. It follows absolutely no educational principle.

  I am astounded that you call yourself an educator for allowing this to happen and to be a

proponent.     Perhaps those teachers who said they favor the new standards favor them because the standards

are step-by-step and those teacher no longer have to put in the effort to teach!  The teachers I have talked to, I am a certified Secondary Social Studies teacher, despise the standards.

  This needs to stop.  My niece goes to (redacted) to get assistance with math.  They teach her using

valid educational principles, sound education theory and usable techniques.   As my wife and I are planning on having children, I pray you will reverse this dumbing down of

education and return to common sense; otherwise I will have to home-school my children. 22
