June 2016 3 “ENRICHING LIFE THROUGH ART”
Message from the President
Well, hot weather is here and all the things that come with an Arizona summer. Nights of 100 degrees, mon-soons, high utility bills and, of course, we all feel the heat. Speaking of “Feel the Heat”, have you seen the On-Line Art Show at our website, http://azartalliance.com/online-competition-2/? It’s a Wow! Over 40 artists with an array of mediums showing their stuff, 117 pieces of original art going mano a mano! While browsing through the gallery, I was introduced to many new artists and work styles that I have never seen. Lots of new stuff! Man, this is one good exhibition and, if you haven’t viewed it, you are missing out. It will be on our website through June, so go take a look and tell your friends. If you are an artist, see how you compare. And, if you are an art lover, sit back and enjoy the eye candy. Also, if you love to own beautiful art, this is a chance for you to deal with the artist directly and pay NO commission. The deal doesn’t get any better than that!
Also in the Alliance Summer Lineup, is our upcoming ex-hibit and sale at the Vision Gallery in Chandler, Arizona. This show has just been juried and is looking like a doozy! This is the final leg of our three-show series that will serve as our mainstay exhibits going into the future. Yes, our artists, their fans, and serious art buyers can all look forward to three solid, quality, and CONSISTENT Art Ex-hibits in the years to come. The Holland Gallery of Fine Art (North Scottsdale/Carefree) “ARTinpARTnership” Show in October, The WHAM West Gallery Sur-prise)“Interpretations” Show in March, and the Vision Gallery (Chandler)“A Group Effort” Show in July and Au-gust will all be high-quality Art Exhibits and Sales that our community can look forward to on a continuous basis.
Finally, I would like to congratulate the winners of “Feel the Heat” On-Line Art Competition:
1st Place - James Corrigan (3D Art), Sherri VanSchaick (2D Art)
2nd Place - Donna Lewis (3D Art), Henry Bosak (2D Art)
3rd Place - Dina Lawther (3D), Judy Delmonico (2D)
This is our first such event and it was a wonderful suc-cess! We had many entries, some from our member groups far out of the Phoenix metro area. There were only six awards given in a highly contested field. So our winners can be proud, knowing they accomplished something in an environment that challenged our art-ists to go mano a mano in a spirit of true competition. Awards in an AZ Art Alliance Exhibit are limited, so to receive such an honor is quite an achievement. Addi-tionally, all the artists who entered are to be com-mended for sharing with us their array of beautiful artwork. And the best part of all is that, while the temperature soars outside, you can view “Feel the Heat” from the cool comfort of your own computer!
Till next time, go see the art, http://azartalliance.com/online-competition-2/ and enjoy.

These AWA Members have been accepted into the 41st Annual Western Federation of Watercolor Societies Exhibition:
Sally Bailey Stan Kurth
Muriel Freund Pamela Root
Tom Herbert Jane Underhill
Nancy Herbst Marylouise Widmaier
Diane Kent Norm Wilson
The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies (WFWS) was founded in 1974. It includes over 4,500 artists in twelve regional watercolor societies, including the Arizona Watercolor Association. The WFWS recognizes artistic excellence through competitions and encourages the visibility of watercolor as an artistic medium through annual exhibitions. Each year the WFWS Exhibition is hosted by a different regional member society. The 41st Annual WFWS Exhibition will be held at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities in Arvada, Colorado. Juror Sterling Edwards, a nationally known contemporary watermedia master, selected 134 artists to participate in the Exhibition. Over 500 artists from the 12 watercolor societies submitted 1065 entries! So the competition was very stiff! The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will run from June 9 – August 28, 2016. For more information, please go to the AWA website,www.azwatercolor.com and click on WFWS.

June 2016 10 “ENRICHING LIFE THROUGH ART”
Greetings. I’m sure happy to be
back. Last month I missed talking
with all my Arizona Art Alliance
friends. Or maybe I should say
“talking at” rather than “talking
with” because I don’t give you guys
much of a chance to talk. You are
probably asking yourself, “What’s
going on with Shanlee? Why is she using such a small
font?” What better way to introduce: (DRUM ROLL PLEASE
……)
Miniature Art.
First, I guess I should define the concept. Contrary to what you may think, Miniature Art is NOT art created just by short people. Just like Giant Art isn’t created exclusively by tall people. A person’s height has absolutely nothing to do with one’s ability to produce art in either category. Miniature Art, also called Model Art, is a genre that focuses on art that is of a much smaller than usual size. It usually includes mostly painting, engraving and sculpture. Minia-ture Art has been made for over 1000 years and is prized by collectors. The White House, the Smithsonian and mu-seums all over the world have collections of Miniature Art. Miniature Art is fine art. It is a specialty art, not a novelty art. It is usually extremely detailed, exquisite in color, has strength of composition and can more than compete with larger paintings. There are guidelines regarding appropri-ate size, but I’m not going to discuss that. Instead, let’s look at some examples of Miniature Art.
Notice the size and the exquisite detail. Amazing.
This is a very happy picture. Imagine painting this on a 4”
by 3” canvas.

A tiny mixed media. WOW.
As usual, I would like to share some of our personal art that illustrates the concept I’ve discussed this month. I think I do this so that my Dear Readers will think that I am very cultured and artsy. Maybe then you won’t all be too disappointed if you find out that I read an occasional romance novel and love to play poker and drink beer. Such a lady – but I have good art.
This chubby little quail is painted on an actual tiny
canvas. It measures 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches.
I bought these tiny paintings in Ireland and they are
treasures that are dear to my heart. Each is 2 inches
by 2 inches. I was able to watch the very old woman

who painted them complete the last one.
That just about completes my exploration of Miniature Art. There is lots more to tell and see about this fascinat-ing art form. I hope Dear Readers that you will continue exploring on your own. I will leave you with a beautiful thought. Beth, a dear friend of mine, shared with me that the price of Miniature Art is often much lower than that of regular-sized pieces. She feels that this fact allows a huge segment of the population to collect and own art – those who would otherwise be unable to experience and enjoy this gift.
“A MUSE” by
Kathleen Koneski
Definition In Webster’s New World Dictionary
1. “in Greek mythology, any of the nine goddesses
who presided over literature and the arts and sci-
ences; Calliope, Clio, Ruterpe, Melpomene, Terpsi-
chore, Erato, Polyhymnia (or Polymnia), Urania, or
Thalia; hence
2. the spirit regarded as inspiring a poet, or other art-
ist; source of genius or inspiration.”
INSPIRATION, what or who inspires you when creating
your art? For me it is found in my 12 lb little friend Freck-
les who just happens to be a red Weiner dog. Now don’t
laugh, you would be surprised just how much inspiration
she really gives me. When I work in my studio she is al-

ways found laying at my feet, giving me that ever so im-
portant glance of “how are things going mom” as I work
on my next “masterpiece”. Watching her different
moods and antics has inspired me with many a drawing
when I am trying to express emotion or attitude in my
work. That look of pity me when she does not get her
way, or excitement when she gets a cookie, all give me
expressions to draw from, especially when I am in a
slump. You do not always have to have the same subject
you are working on to supply the inspiration you need for
the particular piece of artwork. Sometimes it can come
from a totally different source, such as Freckles. So take
a good look around and see where your inspiration can
come from, it could be “mother nature” outside your
window, another artist who’s work you feel influenced
by, or a friend like mine, whatever or whoever it is a
‘Muse” can be a great tool to inspire your work.
So put on the music, grab your “MUSE” gather up your
supplies and hit the studio. Let that inspiration flow and
CREATE, CREATE, CREATE, and most importantly
don’t forget to HAVE FUN !!!!!! Got to go my
Muse wants her cookie….!
Can’t wait to see your next “masterpiece”.
My Muse “Freckles” lost
her battle with cancer on
May 3, 2016. Her pres-
ence in my studio is
greatly missed, but her
inspiration will live for-
ever in my art.
Thank you Freckles
