my objective:my purpose of developing a series of principles and guidelines is to help make transportation and traveling a smoother and friendlier experience with the help of properly designed signs and maps. universal symbols and guidelines allow users to become accustomed to familiar signs and symbols. experiences can become less excruciating and more productive and enjoyable.

functional:in order for W+s systems to be functional, they must be understandable. users depend on W+s systems to help them find their way and without proper communication cues; they are useless when they should be useful. information should be clear, accurate and presentable to different types of users (first-time and everyday users).

recognizable:W+s systems should be recognized as nothing else but a distinct wayfinding system in any giv-en location. users should be able to differenti-ate these systems aside from different signs as they serve an important role in any given envi-ronment. they must be recognizable from any distance, near or far and placed in distinct posi-tions. Distinct aesthetic and appropriate design values are important in this role.

stanDarDizeD:it’s important that wayfinding and signage sys-tems are cohesive and are standardized in a specific setting, yet they must be distinctive. consistency in design allows users to visually group signage together in order to easily com-prehend wayfinding signs from other signs. standardization allows for ease of use and en-sures the user that they are following the cor-rect direction through the connected signage.

aesthetic:When it comes to wayfinding, form follows function, but form is equally as important. it’s important that wayfinding and signage can function with simple yet critical verbal and non-verbal elements. it’s the design and aesthetic that can make it even more functionable. With appropriate aesthetic choices, signs can appear more legible, readable and comprehensible.

simPle:less is always more. W+s systems must be easily recognized, understood and grasped in a matter of seconds. the simpler the design, the more comprehensible and effective the sign is.

universal:all first-time and everyday users should be able to dissect and understand W+s systems universally. this allows our multilingual users to feel comfortable and accustomed to different environments with the same or similar visual and communicative understanding of signage through a universal system regardless of loca-tion, city or country.
