I’m very pleased to extend my congratulations to Phil Rosenshein and Ben Sauder as they arehonoured by the annual Negev Dinner.
As someone who is fiercely proud of her local community and her national heritage, I am alwaysthrilled to recognize and salute these qualities in others. They are part of what make our nation, and our city, so strong and so resilient.
As I write, we’re not long past the celebration that Jews and Christians share so profoundly,Pesach and Easter. As I reflected on this, I came across some words from Rabbi Daniel Greenthat spoke powerfully to me.
He begins, remarkably enough, with a reflection on matzah!
And then he writes: “Pesach teaches us one essential lesson in life: Hardship can and must betransformed into opportunity. Life’s challenges have the ability to either crush us or catapult usto entirely new dimensions. Matzah is the quintessential symbol of freedom precisely becausewe learned from our hardship. Not only were our shackles of bondage unchained, but thosedark moments of our past became our springboard of strength for the future. We emerged witha unique perspective and were able to truly appreciate and fight for goodness. This innerstrength and resilience has come to define the Jew throughout the ages.”
As the Member of Provincial Parliament for Hamilton Mountain, let me offer my gratitude, Philand Ben, that you have contributed so much to the strength and resilience of our communityover the years, and to join with the Jewish National Fund of Hamilton in honouring your longhistory of support.

The son of Jewish immigrants, Henry Winkler was born
in New York City in 1945. The synagogue that the
Winkler family attended was built by Holocaust
escapees and survivors.
From the age of seven, it was Henry Winkler’s dream
to become an actor. Today, he is one of the most
recognized actors worldwide. He is best known for his
Golden Globe award-winning role as “The Fonz” on
the hit comedy series Happy Days (1974-84).
In earlier years Henry struggled with academics,
eventually diagnosed with dyslexia as an adult.
Remarkably Henry was able to overcome the challenges of
this learning disability and succeed in higher education.
He now holds a Bachelor’s Degree and an Honorary PhD
in Hebrew Literature from Emerson College, and a Master
of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama.
In the mid-1980’s Henry Winkler shifted his focus
from acting, to producing and directing. He served as
Executive Producer for a long list of successful shows,
including Hollywood Squares and MacGyver.
Inspired by his own learning struggles, in 2003 Henry
Winkler and co-author Lin Oliver started writing a series
of children’s books entitled Hank Zipzer: the World’s
Most Amazing Under-Achiever. His titles have appeared on
many best seller lists including The New York Times.
Henry Winkler, in spite of his fame, has always managed
to stay well-grounded and enjoys a life-long commitment
to helping others. He is the founding member of
Children’s Action Network, and serves on countless worthy
organizations including United Friends of Children,
Cerebral Palsy Telethon, Epilepsy Foundation of America,
Toys for Tots, and The Special Olympics. His significant
contributions have been recognized by organizations
such as B’nai Brith and The United Nations.
Henry Winkler lives in Los Angeles with Stacey, his wife
of over thirty years. They have three children.
The proceeds from this evening’s dinner
in tribute to
will go towards developing a much-needed green space
in the middle of the town of Hatsor HaGelilit
in the Upper Galilee.

A biography of
Phil Rosenshein
The son of Orthodox
parents, Phil Rosenshein
was born in Poland in
1922. He and his family
came to Canada the
following year and
settled in Hamilton.Phil continues to spend his life involved in
the Jewish community. As a young man of
nineteen, he met Rose Brooks at a United
Jewish Appeal dance, two years later in 1943
they were married, and in 1944 their
daughter Louise was born. Today Phil and
Rose are the proud grandparents of three
grandchildren, their lives further blessed
with the arrival of a great-granddaughter
twenty years ago.

Phil continues to spend
his life involved in the
Jewish community. In 1942 Phil entered the work-force by
taking a job in an auto parts store. By
1947, after just a few years in the business,
Phil opened his own store — Midtown
Auto and Home Appliance — in
Hamilton. Through hard work and
perseverance Phil built a very successful
business, opened a second store in
Brantford, then a third in Kitchener. In
1973 Phil decided to sell out to a larger
company and become semi-retired.
During that time, Phil invested in Effort
Trust with Dr. Arthur Weisz. Around that
same time, he bought a property in West
Hollywood Florida where he could begin
to enjoy some of his well-deserved free
time on some of Florida’s beautiful golf
courses. Over the years, Phil has always
enjoyed fishing. In the early years on Lake
Erie catching perch — and later on in
Georgian Bay catching Northern Pike. He
still carries fond memories of those times.

Over the years, no matter how busy
Phil’s life had become with the challenges
of raising a family and running a
successful business, he always made
time to give back to his community.
For over four decades, Phil has been
extensively involved in the Hamilton
Jewish Community through numerous
organizations. Phil’s long and successful
career as an enthusiastic fundraiser began
in 1948 with an 8-year involvement in
the United Jewish Appeal. Phil spent
nearly two decades working tirelessly for
B’nai Brith, increasing their membership
and raising hundreds of thousands
of dollars over the years. He was
instrumental in the creation of the B’nai
Brith Sports Night, and his hard work
and contributions have been recognized
with ten award plaques and a trophy.
For over two decades, Phil has also
played a key role in the leadership of the
Beth Jacob Synagogue. For twenty-two
years Phil headed the Beth Jacob Finance
Committee and was the shul’s Vice
President/Treasurer for twelve years.
Among Phil’s many talents is his ability
to lead synagogue services. Remarkably
for over forty years Phil expertly led Beth
Jacob’s morning worship service every
Wednesday and Friday.
When the Beverly Golf & Country Club
was facing financial difficulties in 1991,
Phil came to the rescue with his abilities
and intent to raise funds. In just one
week, Phil raised the appreciable amount
of $900,000 and managed to divert the
club from its financial problems.

Phil proudly offers that....
“It is very rewarding to be so involved
in the community and a privilege to
work with so many wonderful people”.
Phil’s long history of community
involvement continues with four decades
to the present as an active fundraiser for
the Jewish National Fund. The unique
‘Bloomfield Award’ earned for his
remarkable contributions to the JNF is
proudly displayed in the dining room
of his home. Phil has also raised large
amounts for Shalom Village and
generously donated a room in the
Alzheimer’s Ward. Phil proudly offers
that.... “It is very rewarding to be so
involved in the community and a
privilege to work with so many
wonderful people”.
Guided by the example set by his
parents — having grown up in a home
where the JNF “pushka” was a fixture —
Phil downplays the magnitude of his
contribution to the community and
simply says “We live in a blessed
country and it is just natural to want to
give back”.

A biography of
Ben Sauder
Ben Sauder was born in
Hamilton in 1922 to
parents Nathan and
Rebecca. They immigrated
to Canada by way of
Galicia Austria to New
York during the First
World War when Nathan
was brought to Hamilton
to make army uniforms.Nathan and Rebecca were founding members of
the Adas Israel Anshei Sefard (on Cannon
Street). Leading by example, they instilled in
their five children a strong respect for Judaism
and a sense of responsibility for its continuity.
Ben is a devoted and caring brother to his sisters
Molly, Clara and Sara, and he shared a very
special bond with his brother Max, who sadly
passed in 1978.

In the late 1930s, Ben joined his father
and siblings in the family coal business
which at that time was being delivered
to homes and considered a ‘preferred’
industry. After the war, Ben was
responsible for starting up the Fuel Oil
Division. Ben successfully ran the oil
business with Vern Thornborrow for
several years, and in 1957 they bought
a stone quarry in Vineland, Ontario. In
the 1960s, Ben had the good fortune to
meet Arthur Weisz, a prominent real
estate broker. Ben joined Arthur in
many successful ventures which
included a syndicated real estate
company which is still operating
today. What began as a business
relationship quickly grew into a
cherished and lasting friendship
between Ben and Arthur. It was through
Ben that Phil Rosenshein became
acquainted with Arthur.
Ben met Shirley Fauman in 1944 at a
Beth Jacob (known then as the Hunter
Street shul) Tea Dance. Two years later
Ben and Shirley were married, and
blessed with two daughters, Wendy in
1948 and Shelly in 1954. Sadly in
2005, just shy of their 60th wedding
anniversary, Shirley passed away.
Through decades of hard work and
perseverance, Ben’s accomplishments
are very impressive. His remarkable
résumé includes such titles as President
of the Hamilton Fuel Merchants
Association, Vice-president of Binkley
Investments, and many Directorships
including that of Effort Trust.

Throughout the years, while working
hard to raise a family and run successful
businesses, Ben remained tirelessly
committed to volunteering and giving
back to the community. Ben is proud to
say that he has been and will continue to
be a life-long member of Adas Israel and
over the years, has held various synagogue
leadership positions including Vice
President. In the late 1950’s Ben was a
strong supporter and key player in the
construction of the new building. The
Adas Israel, first established in 1914 on
Cannon Street in the old wooden
cottage, was rebuilt at that site in 1929.
In 1958 Rabbi Mordechai Green was
hired as the shul’s new spiritual leader.
After Max Hoffman passed away, Ben
partnered with Rabbi Green to gain
support and the necessary finances in
order to turn vision into reality. It took
an arduous effort, dedication and
perseverance to gain this support, secure
pledges and make collections. In 1959
the new Adas Israel was built in its
current location on Cline Avenue. To
this day, Ben values his close and special
relationship with Rabbi Green.
Ben is proud to have contributed his
efforts to several other worthy
organizations as well. He speaks fondly
of working closely over the decades with
life-long friend Phil Rosenshein on the
B’nai Brith Sports night, fundraising for
the Beverly Golf & Country Club, and
canvassing for the JNF, Shalom Village
and U.J.A.

When asked what drives him
to volunteer, Ben modestly
says “it is just a natural thing
to do. I’m proud of being
Jewish and it is important that
I do my share”. Those who

The Jewish NationalFund – KerenKayemeth LeIsrael –was founded in 1901to purchase land forthe return of theJewish people to theirancient homeland. Inthe 109 years since its creation, theorganization hasworked tirelessly torestore the land, enhance and fosterenvironmental quality, and to nurtureZionist values.
The
JewishNational Fund
The KKL-JNF has always championed
the principle of sustainable development,
the meaning of which can be found
within the organization’s very name
‘Keren Kayemeth’ (‘kayamut’ is Hebrew
for sustainability). Its allocation of
lands and natural resources in Israel is
based on the use of ‘interest’ on the
‘principal’ that nature provides, together
with conscientious protection of that
‘principal’ for the future.
Since Israel achieved Statehood in
1948, KKL-JNF’s achievements have
included the planting of more than
240 million trees, reclaiming more than
300,000 acres of land for agriculture,
housing and industry, creating over
1,100 rural villages, building more
than 6500 kilometres of roads through
mountainous and desert terrain, and
establishing some 450 regional parks
throughout the country.
Largely as a result of the afforestation
program, Israel was the only country
in the world to have more trees at the
end of the 20th century than it did at
the beginning. These trees enrich and
conserve the soil against wind and
water erosion which is of paramount
importance in a semi-arid country
such as Israel.
KKL-JNF continues to plant about
3 million trees a year. The Canadian
Christian Forest is one of two major
projects recently started, located in
Beit Keshet in the central Galilee
region between Nazareth and Mount
Tabor, given its name in tribute to the
many Canadian Christians who share
a love for the land of Israel.
The second project forms part of the
KKL-JNF goal to roll back the desert in
part by creating a ‘green’ ring around
the city of Be’er Sheva in the Negev.
2010 JNF_FrontEndv-PP_Layout 1 5/17/10 4:31 PM Page 42
Already over 2,500 hectares of green
areas have been planted and it is
expected that this area will double in
size by 2018. The plants include a
mixture of eucalyptus, and broad-leafed
trees such as plum, carob, acacia and
terebinth. The development of this
green belt includes the rejuvenation and
rehabilitation of existing forested areas
as well as planting in new ones.
Israel continues to be acknowledged as
a world leader in water conservation
and recycling. Two thirds of Israel’s land
Israel continues to be acknowledged as a world leader in water
conservation and recycling. Two thirds of Israel’s land is desert
and there are only about 50 days of rainfall per year.
is desert and there are only about 50 days
of rainfall per year. Some parts of the
Negev are particularly arid receiving
only 25 mm of rain per year. JNF has
built over 2000 water reservoirs all
over the country with a total of more
than 100 million cubic metres —
about six percent of Israel’s annual
water consumption. Currently these
reservoirs help Israel recycle
approximately 75% of its waste water
and this has enabled the country to
create a thriving agricultural sector.
Over the years, reservoir technology has
become incomparably more effective
and sophisticated. This is attributed to
the Research and Development
conducted by KKL-JNF and its partners,
and the actual hands-on experience
while building them. Effluents — partly
purified sewage water — are stored in
reservoirs as well, instead of allowing
them to flow freely into the environment.
This prevents the pollution of rivers,
soil, and underground water sources as
well as the Mediterranean, Lake Kinneret,
the Dead Sea and the Red Sea.
The effluents, which contain many
fertilizers, are used for agricultural
irrigation in places with little rain,
enabling intensive and profitable
agriculture even in regions where
there would otherwise be no
agriculture at all. Now that water is
available, there can be two-and-a-half
growth cycles in a year.
2010 JNF_FrontEndv-PP_Layout 1 5/17/10 4:31 PM Page 43
The reservoirs are scattered all over
Israel and add beauty to the scenery,
provide a habitat for many birds and
fish, create ecological hubs, and also
provide an environment that delights
the eyes and the souls of local residents,
farmers, hikers and all other visitors.
An entirely new concept is being
developed in Kfar Saba’s Green Park
neighbourhood where Israel’s first
bio-filter system is being built thanks
to the persistence of Yaron Zinger,
an Israeli biotechnological engineering
graduate. His post-graduate studies
took him to Monash University in
Melbourne Australia to join a team of
researchers in collaboration of his
knowledge of biotechnology and their
knowledge of engineering.
The bio-filter system was built using
money from KKL-JNF Australia, as
well as KKL-JNF in Israel and the
municipalities of Holon, Bat Yam,
Yavne, Rehovot, Modi’in, Hadera,
Kfar Saba and Rana’na. It will utilize
rainwater collected from city streets
during the rainy season and recycle it
for municipal use. Using strands of
plants with an appetite for substances
which negatively affect water quality and
layers of water and soil, it absorbs
polluted run-off water from fuel
residues, heavy metals and nitrates,
and produces drinking-quality or
nearly drinking- quality water.
When similar systems are installed in
other sites along Israel’s coastal plain,
they will help restore the coastal aquifer
which has become increasingly polluted
over the past few decades through
overuse and lack of natural renewal.
Rainwater from city streets will be
absorbed into the aquifer during the
winter, and during the rest of the year
these bio-filter systems will achieve
their other goal — improvement of the
groundwater in wells which is of very
low quality because of its nitrate content.
Protection of natural resources and
ensuring the quality of life for all
residents of Israel and their descendants
continues to be one of KKL-JNF’s
2010 JNF_FrontEndv-PP_Layout 1 5/17/10 4:31 PM Page 44
environmental objectives. Sustainable
development constitutes the natural
continuation of the organization’s
historic role: protection of the land and
its development for the benefit of the
people, today and in the future.
KKL-JNF experts also continue to work
with people from other countries. In
January 2010 they hosted a number of
leading water specialists from Manitoba
for the Second Manitoba-Israel Water
Symposium. They continue to help
countries in Africa and elsewhere in their
struggle against the Gall Wasp — the
scourge of eucalyptus trees in many areas.
In March, KKL-JNF’s Director of
River Rehabilitation Avry Kadmon and
local Executive Director Franklin
Simkevitz went on a whirlwind tour
of Southern Ontario, stopping in
Windsor, London, Hamilton and
Waterloo to explain Israel’s solutions to
its scarce water resources, and how
KKL-JNF is prepared to share its
knowledge and expertise with other
countries around the world.
Environmental issues continue to
plague the planet and KKL-JNF is
always willing to share its knowledge
with others in order to improve life
for everyone. All these activities are
excellent examples of ways in which
Jews and non-Jews around the world
continue to partner with the people
of Israel in their common quest for
harmony, beauty, the highest quality of
life, and ultimately ‘shalom’ – peace.
Thank you for helping KKL-JNF
continue to turn vision into reality.

accesses. This recreation site, The
Hillel Landsman Park, is being named
after the first head of the Hatsor
HaGelilit local council.
The Hillel Landsman Park will provide
a myriad of leisure and recreational
opportunities for town residents
regardless of age or background.
Five entrances will lead to the park
from surrounding neighbourhoods,
ensuring easy access. The park will
serve a broad cross-section of the
community: for children; a large
playground complete with all the
equipment needed for fun and healthy
activity, for families; a picnic area with
tables and play facilities, for older
members of the community; a number
of access paths including shaded areas,
benches, and a variety of plants to
create a colourful environment that
changes with the seasons.
in Hatsor HaGelilit
2010 JNF_FrontEndv-PP_Layout 1 5/17/10 4:31 PM Page 48
In the central area of the park there will
be a lawn suitable for community
gatherings and events, featuring a round
stage. The central path through the
park will be paved with stone, while the
other paths will be coated with asphalt.
KKL-JNF assigns particular importance
to the nurturing and support of
peripheral communities around Israel.
The aim is to improve the quality of
life, retain the younger generation, and
attract newcomers. This project will
enhance the sense of civic pride and
provide space where residents of all
backgrounds can mingle and enjoy
their leisure and recreation time.
The Hillel Landsman Park in Hatsor
HaGelilit will enhance the community
by providing its residents with a much-
needed centre for recreational activity.
Many thanks to all supporters of the
2010 Hamilton Negev Dinner who
have helped turn this dream into reality.

Thank You To All Of This Year’sJewish National Fund Volunteers
2010 JNF_BackEnd-PP_Layout 1 10-05-17 3:51 PM Page 93
The Jewish National Fund of Hamilton would like to express its gratitude to thosevery special people and organizations without whose help, the Negev Dinner would
be nearly impossible to accomplish. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the following whohave worked so diligently or provided services to make this evening a success.....
The leadership of the JNF also acknowledges the two extremely committed women who work in our JNF office: Sonia Jacob; our Administrative Coordinator who manages to deal with so many aspects and challenges of the job always with elegance and calm, and; Roberta Katz;
our Office Assistant who is always positive, pleasant, helpful, and puts everyone at ease. KOL HAKAVOD AND TODAH RABAH!!
Israel Vukmir – The State of Israel is richer because of the efforts of those like Israel Vukmir. He gives ofhimself without question and is fully committed to the Land of Israel.
Lorne Gaffe and Hamilton Store Fixtures – Lorne and his staff provide a safe place for our Negev Dinnerdishes. They help us keep track of inventory and shipping to the Negev Dinners in Hamilton, Windsor, andto other venues for special occasions.
Violet Byl at Effort Trust – Violet gives generously of her time coordinating and arranging venues for ourtelethons, and providing security duty to the office after-hours.
Mark Draak and Wide Eyed Communications – flowers abound in the wide eyes of their creative minds. Theideas continue to flourish and flow in abundance.
Irene Gaudet and Chef Alan – and the Hamilton Convention Centre for consistently delivering excellentfood and guest-services.
Jennifer Howe – of Perfect Sphere Productions never says 'no', and for whom no challenge is too great.Jennifer masters the agenda of the 'Dinner' in addition to her numerous other responsibilities.
Telav Communications – for their ever-reliable AV support.
Dave Katz & Sam MacBeath – the many aspects of our 'dinners' are largely taken for granted. Much workgoes into transporting, sorting and assembling dinnerware for large numbers of dinner guests. Dave and Samprovide expert handling of such tasks.
Charles Kravetsky – is meticulous and dedicated to koshering the kitchen in which our 'dinners' are made.It is Charles' responsibility to ensure that all of our food and its preparation adheres to the laws of Kashrut.
Lawrence Yanover – providing expert photographic services, capturing the visual essence of our NegevDinner and the tribute to our honourees.
Eric Lynes – Biltmore Hats - upon our request to provide hats for our decor, simply and without hesitation- delivered them to us.
… and our team of dedicated volunteers whose names appear elsewhere in this book. It is reassuring to know that so many share our special love for Israel and the
Jewish National Fund.
