Wayne’s World 3
Dear Friends,
Every nation on earth will adore you. The Psalm we sing this weekend calls me to reflect
on the goodness of God and my response to that goodness. The Adoration of the Magi, depicted in many beautiful works of art, often shows warmth and light shining on the faces of the adorers, radiating from the one being adored. When we adore our God, God allows warmth and light to shine upon us.
The coming of the Magi brings to fulfillment the
prophecy of Isaiah and Jeremiah. Their following the star brings to reality the words of the Psalmist. The adoration of the Magi reminds us that it really is the Christ Child who deserves our praise and dedication. Herod thought he should receive the adoration and praise from all of his subjects, a little like today’s political leaders. Countless distracters (including this enduring pandemic) demand our attention, and lure us away from our paying fitting praise to God. What’s getting in your way of giving Jesus your praise? Let’s learn from the Magi to do all in our power to find Christ and praise Him with our lives, and to bring His peace to our troubled world.
The Magi traveled in faith to see the Christ Child
and offered Him what they had. Each year, we celebrate the birth of Jesus. We celebrate God’s becoming man, his dwelling among us. Do we approach Him with the same enthusiasm and excitement as the wise men in Saint Matthew’s Gospel? Do we offer the Christ Child any gifts of our selves? Do we invite others to know of the good news of peace and joy that he brings? Do we bow down before Christ and pay Christ the homage we owe Him?
The Magi offered gifts of themselves. They
prostrated themselves before the Lord. They adored the infant Lord. To what do you pay homage? To whom do you offer your gifts? Does the coming of the Christ Child cause you to be overjoyed? We can decide to make worship of Him the most important thing we do this year. We can offer Him our treasure, without holding back. Jesus came to show us the love of God.
The Magi saw the star, and followed it. Filled
with joy on their arrival at the place where the Child Jesus lay, they entered (encountered Him), did Him homage (worshipped Him), and offered Him gifts of their treasures. Isn’t that what we aim to do as a community of faith at Saints JFX? We encounter Jesus in Word and Sacrament. We worship the Lord through full active participation in the liturgy. And we offer the Lord gifts of ourselves.
Many say that Epiphany is the climax of the
Christmas season. Maybe it is so that we can continue the joy as we return to our regular routines - back to work and
back to school – even if both are happening at home these days. God calls each of us to experience the joy the Christ Child gives, to know it, to live it and to share it.
This week let’s do what we
can to make others’ hearts throb by our presence in their lives. Let’s help them find a reason to be joyful. Let’s commit to encountering Christ, to worshipping Christ, and to wholly and enthusiastically sharing with Christ our treasure, whatever that treasure may be.
So, in 2021, I invite you to get caught up in the
love of the God we cannot see. Let’s start by adoring Christ then let’s offer Him the gift of our time, talent, and treasure. Let’s tell others about his love for us, inviting them to join us in getting caught in the love of the God who made Himself known to us in the presence of a little child.
Peace, PS, please join me in thanking all who made our Christmas season’s worship not only possible, but beautiful. John and Jonathan and their teams of musicians, Joe and Anne and their teams of logistics volunteers (more than 100 strong), Jenny and Mary Kay (our communications experts), our lectors, commentators, Ron and Chris and the behind-the-scenes staff members, and all the priests and deacons deserve a round of applause. By the time you read this, we will have celebrated nearly forty Christmas season Masses since the 24th of December! God is good!
