IN conformity with custom, the GrandJurors for the February Term of the

above named Court, have visited the Coun-ty Jail, and do make to your Honor thefollowing report, viz :

We find confined therein nine whitemen—five for theft, and four insane; threenegroes—one for safe-keeping, one fortheft, and one insane. Of the above, threewhile men have been tried during thepresent term of Court.

Everything relating to the duties of theSheriff, appears to be conducted in ascleanly and ellicient a manner as could beexpected from any person, in considera-tion of the miserable construction and di-lapidated condition of the building—forthe want of proper ventilation mid sundryrepairs.

We feel it almost unnecessary to call theattention ofyour Honor to the above facts,as the matter has so often been broughtto your notice by former juries, hut asense of duty seems to require us to im-press upon your mind that the construc-tion of the building and the condition ofthe apartments are such, that it is whollyinadequate, in any reasonable degree, tosecure the comfort of the lunatics andkeep in proper condition the other priso-ners. We do, therefore, most seriouslyappeal, in the name of humanity, thatsomething may be done for the ameliora-tion of their condition, by the proper au-thorities.
