IRIS ONLINE - INTERACTIVE RAW MATERIALS INFORMATION SYSTEM OF AUSTRIAThe new Austrian digital Interactive Raw Materials Information System IRIS Online allows to display geological, tectonical, geochemical, aerogeophysical maps, maps ofmetamorphic events, mineral deposits / occurrences a.s.o. simultaneously. The data base comprises more than 5700 entries of Austrian mineral deposits / occurrences andmore than 17.000 references. Special queries (groups of minerals, deposits, geochemical anomalies a.s.o.) are possible. The mineral deposits/occurrences are subdivided intoappr. 200 metallogenetic districts (mineral deposits / occurrences within a clearly defined tectonic unit, a specific stratigraphic or facies unit, characterised by both similarshape and mineral content of the individual deposits / occurrences). IRIS Online is not only an important expert tool for exploration, but for scientists as well, allowing tosynthesise their own metallogenetic concepts.

One of the main targets of the staff of the GeologicalSurvey was to design the IRIS database and a userfriendly operability and screen performance usingESRI ArcGIS Online application. Furthermore theGeological Survey implemented the definitions of themetallogenetic districts and mineral commodities intotheir thesaurus. Special attention was payed to thescreen-performance, as most applicable extent of thescreen, explicit function buttons, dynamic andsuppressible legends to avoid any visual restriction ofthe results on the screen. The master screen of IRISOnline illustrates all mineral deposits / occurrences(except construction materials) as rhombs. In thegeneral scale there is only a differentiation by groupsof minerals.

The newest findings of the tectonic structure of the Eastern Alps have been compiled in the scale 1: 1 Mio. Furtherzooming led to the display of more detailed maps automatically (geological maps in the scale 1:200.000, 1:50.000,if available).

For the very first time maps of the main metamorphic events are applicable. Maps are available for the mainthree metamorphic events (variscian, permian, cretaceous [eoalpidic] metamorphism).

Since 1978 Austria has been sampled with stream sedimentssystematically. More than 34.500 samples were analysed for35 elements. IRIS Online NEW allows to visualise the resultsof the streamsediment-geochemistry either in an overviewscale (raster) or in a detailed scale as classified singlesymbols. Furthermore it is possible to display the anomaliesas residuals only.

In the early 1980-ies Austria has been aeromagnetically surveyed. The results are available either as a pixelisedmap (overview-scale) or as isolines in a more detailed scale.

Contrary to simple „mineral deposit maps“, showingthe location of mineral deposits only, a metallogeneticmap visualises the other information as well, so thatexperts can extract their own genetic interpretationfrom the symbols directly.

In the general scale there is only a differentiation bygroups of minerals (red: ironores and steel alloyingmetals, blue: base metals; green: pyrites, yellow:precious metals, purple: special metals; orange:industrial minerals; brown: lignites; black: hard coal;grey: grafites).
