An illustrated talk on ‘Ireland’s Botanical Art Heritage’ will be given by botanical artist and curator o the Botanical Art Expo, Jane Stark.

Te talk will cover the historical background o botanical art in Ireland, with a

look at some Irish botanical artists rom the 18th century until the present, and

including the ormation, in 2013, o the Irish Society o Botanical Artists and some

details about the inaugural project or this group – an Irish botanical alphabet .

Following the talk, an auction will be held or a much sought aer library

edition o Ireland’s Wild Orchids: A Field Guide by Brendan Sayers and SusanSex, published in 2008. Tis beautiul limited edition, cased and quarter-bound

in goatskin leather and printed on ne paper was produced by Antiquarian

Bookcras at Marley Park, is signed and numbered, and contains an extra 16

pages o orchid illustrations not ound in the so-cover edition. In addition, this

particular copy is urther enhanced by an original watercolour o a native Irish

orchid as the rontispiece, painted and signed by Susan Sex.

About the authors:

Susan Sex is one o Ireland’s oremost botanical artists. She was awarded RoyalHorticultural Society Gold Medals in 2000, 2001 and 2002, and was commissioned

to paint a new denitive series o stamps or An Post, eaturing the Wild Flowers

o Ireland. Her illustrations have eatured in a number o publications including

Curtis’s Botanical Magazine and Te Plantsman and several books. She received the

Jill Smythies Award o the Linnean Society o London or the magnicent large-

ormat book, Ireland’s Wild Orchids, published in 2004 and Ireland’s Wild Orchids

– a Field Guide, published in 2008.

Brendan Sayers is glasshouse oreman at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin.

Aer working in proessional horticulture in New York and New Jersey, hereturned to Ireland in 1993. Brendan specialises in Belizean and Irish orchids. In

addition to the limited edition portolio-sized work, Ireland’s Wild Orchids and

Ireland’s Wild Orchids: A Field Guide, he also authored Orchids of Glasnevin (a

history o the orchid collection at Glasnevin) with Charles Nelson, He is a recipient

o the prestigious H. H. Bloomer Award rom the Linnean Society o London.

A percentage o the auction proceeds, aer expenses, will be donated to the

Christian Blind Mission and the Galway Simon Community. Tis magnicent

volume, which will hold great interest or book collectors, botanical art

enthusiasts, amateur naturalists and orchid anciers, is being ofered or auction

with a reserve price o €180. Paintings rom the Botanical Art Expo and related

print items will also be on sale during the evening.
