Implosive Connectors

Implosive Connectors utilize the energy in a small implosive charge to compress a metal sleeve over conductor or wire.

The pressure is applied instantaneously (1/10 000 sec.) and the compression of the sleeve and cable is performed with a high degree of accuracy.

7

Implosive connectors include:

full tension joints dead-ends jumper terminals repair sleeves full tension repair joints non-tension sleeves compression rings miscellaneous other fittings The Connectors can be used on dry conductor, fully greased aluminium alloy conductors and ACSR conductors with greased steel core. Connector components have been standardized to fit all common conductor types.

8

Implosive connectors for:

Al. conductors from 50mm2 till 1584 mm2

FeAl conductors from 50 6/1 till LOMVI

(1 detonation) Special conductors (2 detonations) Fjord crossings Steel conductors from 39 mm2 till 900 mm2

(Greenland)

9

The system provides:

Consistant high quality

Optimum compression

Only radial deformation

Reduced installation time

Less total installed cost

Faster stringing

With this system buying, using, maintaining, storage and transportation of hydraulic presses or other compression tools is unnecessary!

Accessories

REPAIR SLEEVES

Repair sleeves restores the conductivity of a conductor with one or more broken strands. The implosive charge is mounted on one half of the sleeve and is taped together before compression.

16

Accessories

COMPRESSION RINGS

Compression rings are made for use in handling and sleeving large conductors and special conductors with aluminium alloy strands. They will make the installation work a lot easier.

17

Other areas of use Implosive Connectors may also be used

for other purposes.

As shown on the next page, Implosive Connectors are used in connecting steel wires between two bridgeheads. Here at the construction of the bridge “Höga Kusten” on E4 north of Stockholm, Sweden.

Testing and quality assuranse:

Production

VP Metall is certified to meet the requirements in of NS-EN ISO 9001: 2000, and NS-EN ISO 14001: 2004

The implosives connectors are approved for -marking by PvTT.

Each new type of Implosive Connectors are tested at Sintef. (Trondheim, Norway)

Safety: Wooden boxes for transportation – approved by DNV

Basis for approval:

Drop-test

Fall from 25 meters with 3 stk. Curlew connectors, repeated 7 times.

CONCLUSION: Deformed connectors, but no detonation of explosives.

Hazard-test

Detonation test under storage.

CONCLUSION:

1: Mass explosion in one box.

2: No mass explosion in other boxes nearby (no transmission of the detonation).

3: The explosives burned without detonation.

Classification: 1.2 D

Regulation regarding transportation:

Each company dealing with Implosive Connectors must be updated on local regulation regarding transportation

From VP Metall to our customer:

Dangerous goods ADR transport

Transportation are carried out by Multisped AS, who have a lot of knowledge about transporting explosives

VP Metall’s responsibility ends when the goods arrive at the customer

Regulations in Norway

For transportation and handling less then 20 kg netto explosives:

Car: do not transport explosives in the passenger area

No requirement regarding marking of the car

28

Storage:

Each company dealing with Implosive Connectors must be updated on local regulation regarding storage

Local regulations In Norway, permission for storage up to 250 kg

are given by local authority’s.

Requirement regarding personnel who handles the goods: Training and knowledge about handling and storage.

ONGOING PROJECTS FOR STATNETT

VP metall provides joints, pulling grips, dead ends and jumper terminals for these projects:

Sauda – Liastølen

Sima – Samnanger

Skogfoss - Varangerbotn

29

Changing old joints

Through several years Statnett has replaced old non-implosive joints with implosive repair joints.

Including also dead ends and jumper terminals.

Repair dead ends, repair sleeves and other special solutions.

Customer’s request – our challenge!

30

Marking on each joint: - Cat.no - Production month and year - CE-no
