    Introduction: Land and property rights

    This special issue of the Journal of Development Economics originatesfromaUNU-WIDER research project on land inequality anddecentralizedgovernance in LDCs. The research began in late 2010 with DilipMookherjee and Pranab Bardhan jointly directing the project; one ofthe rst project activities was an authors' workshop organised byUNU-WIDER in Hanoi in January 2011 and hosted by the Central Insti-tute for Economic Management (CIEM), Ministry of Planning andInvestment (MPI), Vietnam. A series of papers were presented at theworkshop under the wide umbrella of land reformincluding land dis-tribution, property rights, farming, tenure, poverty, and migration. Fol-lowing the workshop, the Journal of Development Economics launched acall for papers for the special issue. We received 39 submissions in total

    of the papers followed the journal's standard refereeing process. Of the11 papers accepted for the special issue, 7 are the result of the UNU-WIDER project. We understand that UNU-WIDER is grateful for the -nancial contributions to its research programme from the governmentsof Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
