ISCR - Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il RestauroVia di San Michele 23, Rome
The Istituto Superiore per la Conser-vazione ed il Restauro is an institute specialised in restoration, conservation and restoration-con-servation training at the university level. Founded in 1939, the ISCR has always played a leading role in the international sphere. It is a permanent member of the ICCROM Council and has participated in countless projects under the aegis of the European Community and the UNESCO World Heritage Commit-
tee. At the international level, one of the institution’s most important aims is to provide training enabling technicians to lead in problem-sol-ving and long-term conservation for their own nation’s archaeological areas, monumental sites, heritage interiors and objects. One of the ISCR’s constant areas of activity is in direct participation and technical consulting for conservation interventions of particular importance and difficulty. In recent
decades the institute has also become increasingly active in international training, organisation of courses, and development of local conservation centres and laboratories. The ISCR is therefore Italy’s leading institution in international conservation-restora-tion programmes, recognised for the high professionalism of its technicians and the results of its interventions. One example of exporting knowledge is the recent
project for the creation of the Central Institute for Conservation in Belgrade, Serbia, based on the model of the ISCR. Other current activities include education and training programmes involving Jordan, Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, China, Egypt and India.
The Istituto Centrale per la Grafica was formed in 1975, through the unification of the Calcografia Nazionale, dating to the era of the papal governments, and the Gabinetto Nazionale delle Stampe. In 2008, this joining of scientific missions was followed by the unification of the rich collections of prints, drawings, printing plates, photographs and art videos at a single seat. The ICG promotes the international development of
graphic languages and arts by means of multicultural education programmes that further the local art forms of the individual nations, through the study of Italian and European graphic cultures. The training activities deal with the knowledge and safeguard of historic and contemporary graphics heritage, and are directed at all the professions active in the fields of enhancement and preservation of historic and
contemporary graphic materials. The target audiences include artists, students, researchers, art academy and university faculty members, librarians and archivists, from both public and private institutions. Two courses are offered, one each on drawing and printmaking. Both of these include modules at the introductory and advanced levels, each of which is one week in duration. Each module consists of
a cycle of lessons in theory and workshops on historical techniques and conservation of graphic heritage, taught by the different ICG technical departments and services. The training programmes are developed according to the needs and requests of the different nations and the educational and professional backgrounds of the specific participants.
ICG – Central Institute for GraphicsVia della Stamperia 6, Rome
The ICCD was formed in 1975, through the unification of several previous institutions: the Office for Cataloguing, founded in 1969, for the definition of methodologies and coordination of operations in the cataloguing of the nation’s cultural properties; the National Photographic Bureau (NPB), founded in 1895 as the principle institution for production and collection of photographic documentation; and the National
Collection of Aerial Photography, founded in 1959 (later amalgamated under the NPB). Today, in addition to its roles in cataloguing cultural properties, the ICCD also holds many of the nation’s most important historic photograph collections. The objective of cataloguing is to develop systematic documentation of all types of cultural properties specified under Italian law, for their protection, enhancement and development. The Institute is
responsible for defining consistent, standardised cataloguing methodo-logies and procedures. It cooperates with Italian universities and other institutions to offer training and internships that guarantee appropriate qualifications for the cataloguers working in the various disciplinary sectors. The ICCD is also responsible for the education of specialists in archival management and studies, and in the area of historic photography.

The Accademia Teatro alla Scala provides advanced education for all professions associated with the performing arts, organised in four departments: Arts Management, Stage-Workshops, Music and Dance. Students gain skills and knowledge under the guidance of the Teatro alla Scala professionals and other highly-qualified artists and experts. The teaching methodology is that of direct engagement in the work
environment, including ‘on the job’ participation in concerts, theatrical events and exhibitions, as well as in the ‘Academy Project’ and in secondary internships with major theatrical institutions in Italy and abroad. The ‘Academy Project’ consists of a regularly scheduled opera, produced by the Accademia students themselves and staged at Teatro alla Scala. In addition, the Accademia Teatro alla Scala also operates a Cultural
Cooperation Programme to assist theatrical institutions in other nations in founding training programmes based on the model of the Accade-mia. The programme operates by means of projects supported by the European Community and the relative local governments. The Accademia Teatro alla Scala Orchestra provides full training to students embarking upon a career in an orchestra, preparing them to perform the entire repertoire from
symphonic music to opera and ballet accompaniment. Under the guidance of acclaimed musicians and the First Sections of the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra, the curriculum provides individual training in the chosen instrument, lessons in chamber music and orchestra sections, and exercises with the full orchestra. The Academy Orchestra has performed at famous theatres, concert societies and international festivals.

OPD- Opificio delle Pietre DureVia degli Alfani 78, Florence
The Opificio delle Pietre Dure (OPD) is an autonomous institute of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, charged with conservation, research and education concerning cultural properties. The OPD is based at three locations in Florence: Via degli Alfani 78 (school, laborato-ries, museum, library and archives); Fortezza da Basso, Viale F. Strozzi 1 (scientific departments, laboratories) and the Sala delle
Bandiere of Palazzo Vecchio (tapestry laboratory). The OPD School of Higher Education and Research offers a five-year education programme leading to the equivalent to a master’s degree, as well as 13 professional development and 15 ‘internship’ courses. The overall aim is to provide knowledge and competencies concerning all aspects of conservation for the different cultural heritage materials
and their related artistic techniques. The theoretical and practical lessons are instructed by the OPD’s 11 departments: Bronzes and Antique Arms, Ceramic and Plastic Materials, Stone, Mosaics and Semi-Precious Stone, Jewellery, Canvas and Panel Paintings, Paper and Parchment; Polychrome Wood Sculpture, Mural Paintings, Tapestries, Textiles, and finally Laboratories and Archaeo-logical Properties Services.
The Piccolo Teatro di Milano was founded in 1947; it has been a member of the Union of European Theatres since 1991. The Piccolo Teatro boasts an excellent reputation at the national and international levels, both for its productions presented in Milan, Italy and worldwide, as well as for its role in advanced professional education.Over the past thirty years, the Piccolo Teatro School of Theatre
has provided full training to over 200 professional actors. In addition, the theatre develops and organises short courses with international partners, in all fields of theatre activity. Training in the Production and Organisation area deals with the conception, creation and staging of plays, including production aspects, planning of tours in Italy and abroad, and management of visiting Italian and foreign productions. The Technical
and Staging area concerns all processes of conception, design, construction and mounting of sets and props, including the staging of visiting productions. The Wardrobe area deals with costume design, production, maintenance and storage. The Carabinieri arm of the Italian Forces has always played a leading role in the protection of cultural heritage. The Carabinieri Command for Protection of Cultural Properties was first recognised by Decree of the Minister of the Interior, in 1992. Its role was further defined by Legislative Decree 297 of 2000 and by the Decree of the Minister of the Interior of 28 April 2006. The CCTPC is the coordinating agency for all information and analysis in
the cultural heritage sector, operating in synergy with other national and international police forces and agencies. Specifically, the CCTPC engages with all other Italian police forces and compo-nents of the Carabinieri, and cooperates with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism in carrying out all functions of preservation and safeguard as identified under the Ministerial (MIBACT) Decree of 5 March 1992.
At the request of the international organisations (UNESCO, IILA, etc) and individual nations, the Command provides training courses for all public service personnel engaged in the protection of cultural properties (police and customs forces, ministries and agencies in the cultural sector). The objectives are to communicate the organisational and operational models of the Command for the Protection of
Cultural Properties, which is considered one of the world’s leading organisations in the sector. The sterling reputation of the CCTPC derives from its long history, clearly defined responsibili-ties, effective structure, computer-ised methods in the tracking of illicit acts, and its operations for recovery and restitution.
CCTPC- Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Properties‘Lamarmora Barracks’, Via Anicia 24, Rome
The Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MIBACT) supports international cultural exchange through the offer of advanced education courses in those cultural sectors where Italy achieves world recognition for excellence and expertise. The programmes are financed under Law 7 of August 2015, using funds from the ARCUS cultural develop-ment agency, and are organised in two areas. The first focuses on cultural properties, with the courses being provided by
MIBACT’s highest education, research and cataloguing institutions, as well as the Central Institute for Graphics and the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. The second area focuses on cultural activities, particularly theatre and classical music. In this area, the programmes are coordinated by the MIBACT Directorate General for Live Theatre, with the courses being offered by two of Italy’s institutions of superior standing: the Piccolo
Teatro di Milano and the Accademia Teatro Alla Scala. The design of the different educational programmes is flexible and multi-facet-ed, to encourage and respond to international demand. The individual courses range in duration from one to eight weeks. The Cultural Heritage area is organised in three sectors: Conserva-tion-Restoration, Knowledge of Cultural Heritage, and Protection of Cultural Heritage. The Cultural Activities area is composed of two sectors:
Music and Performing Arts.A pilot education project is currently being organised with the CARICOM member states (Caribbean nations), utilising cofinancing from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI). MIBACT and MAECI have signed an agreement for the coordination of the project by their respective departments: the Directorate General for Cooperation and Development and the Directorate General for Education and Research.
