A live project between the Architectural Association School of Architecture and the Japanese Embassy, created traditional mobile Japanese market stalls, called Yatai, for children to play with. The project was launched in the area of Japan affected by the tsunami last year, and then brought to schools and sites in central London. The Yatai and results of these play sessions made for a charming exhibition.
Mogadishu: Forgotten Pasts and Distant Futures brought together a unique exhibition of images
from Somalia, with rare documentation of Italian colonial architecture illustrating Mogadishu before the civil war.
The 2012 Silver Pigeon Award was presented to the Namibian contribution to the International Architecture and Design Showcase 2012 for their exhibition ‘Definitions of Space’. The exhibition retrospectively depicted the country’s journey from colonial times to full independence through a beautiful pictorial timeline.
The first show to open was Home, a groundbreaking group show that brought together work from six culturally-rich nations. Conscious of thousandsof years of tradition, the work on show from these dynamic young artists and architects was engaging, innovative and fearless in challenging the conventional concept of ‘home’ in contemporary North Africa and the Middle East.
Architecture of Change brought together five disparate nations who have shared a tumultuous
recent history of apartheid, occupation and expulsion from their homelands for a captivating show. The exhibition included work from the Caribbean, Namibia, South Africa, Serbia and Taiwan.
Vintage Russian sportsposters, including rareexamples on display for the first time outside Russia, were exhibited by the Embassy of the Russian Federation. The freedom and vitality of lifechampioned in the imagesof tanned, lithe athletes – entirely at odds with the drudgery that most citizens experienced during the Soviet era – made thisexhibition of propagandaa fascinating window intothe past.

14 – 23 September 2012
This September marks the 10th anniversary of the London Design Festival. The festival was originally conceived to pay tribute to the capital’s creativity and innovation and ten years on, this aim has been achieved beyond all expectations. Since 2003, the festival has showcased a vast range of inspiring projects, from installations in the capital’s public spaces, to commissioned projects highlighting emerging talent in museums and galleries. Year on year, the festival has evolved, with 2011 seeing more than 300 separate events and projects over the 10-day celebration. In 2012, a year when the global spotlight is firmly on London, the festival is delighted to present a programme that again raises the bar in the quality, imagination and innovation demonstrated in its last decade. Global Design Forum
The London Design Festival is staging the inaugural Global Design Forum – an enlightening, stimulating and intensive one-day event to set the global agenda for design. The forum aims to encourage speakers and delegates alike to generate debate on the role of design – today and in the future – identifying new ideas and directions in design through a mix of keynote speeches, panel discussions and case study presentations. Speakers include Thomas Heatherwick, Yves Behar, Tom Dixon, Richard Seymour, John Thackara, Charles Leadbeater and the British Council’s Vicky Richardson.
V&A Museum, Trafalgar Square and throughout the city
The V&A is the official hub of the Festival and home to a number of breathtaking installations specially commissioned in ‘secret’ locations throughout the museum. At Trafalgar Square, a complex immersive space is being created in which finely-tuned technologies will provide an unrivalled acoustic experience, celebrating design you can’t see – sound. Be sure to pick up a London Design Festival guide for full details of other key design exhibitions, events, talks and installations across the capital.

Now in its 18th year, 100% Design is the UK’s largest contemporary annual gathering of architects and interior designers and attracted more than 18,000 visitors in 2011. With the expertise of former Deputy Director of the London Design Festival William Knight, a new layout and a broad spectrum of fresh talent, ideas and innovative design, this should be the most successful show to date. Exhibitors include: Moroso, Vitra, Herman Milar, Boss Design and following on from their presence at Clerkenwell Design Week; Deadgood, Jennifer Newman, Young & Norgate and Dare Studio. This year’s show has also attracted a significant range of UK and international brands. A dedicated group of countries will also be showcased, including France, Korea, Chile, Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria, alongside contributors from Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands. International Seminar Series
Head to 100% Design for a series of live international sessions which will link up to design studios around the world. The seminars take place at 10.30 each morning and will link to countries including Finland, Indonesia and Tanzania.
London is one of the world’s greatest creative cities, with global inspiration, interpretation and diversity feeding into its powerful design community. To showcase the creative talents of the African and African-Caribbean design community and to engage, inspire and promote the work of black designers, the British European Design Group, in partnership with the London Design Festival, has been organising a series of major exhibitions and events over the last three years. This culminates in a comprehensive programme that runs from July to October, spanning part of the London 2012 Olympics. AACDD aims to promote greater public awareness of the black diaspora’s contribution to Britain, raising the status and commercial potential of black designers. It aims for greater involvement of this community in design industries and to make the Government, colleges and schools more aware of it’s potential as a source of income and employment. Ultimately, by cultural and technological exchange, AACDD aims to foster links between black British designers and designers in Africa and the Caribbean.

International Exhibitions & Events
In London and Vienna, amid the cities’ imposing architecture, there are gaps – incidental spaces in and around the ‘feet’ of buildings – where people meet to take part in impromptu sports such as football, basketball and skateboarding. These places, referred to as ‘urban sport pockets’ (USPs), facilitate personal expression and collective interaction, and colour the city’s urban realm. From the skateboarding vaults under the Queen Elizabeth Hall of London’s Southbank Centre to the freerunning trails through Vienna’s Karlsplatz, sport is always linked to the urban realm.
This exhibition explores the USPs of London and Vienna, investigating their relationship with the surrounding architecture, their national identity and their value as incubators of a city’s sporting talent. Curated by Nick Baker.

Flemish architecture is currently enjoying increased international attention. Architects from Flanders and Brussels are often invited to prestigious industry events around the world to present their work. This growing international recognition reflects the significant work of a number of Flemish practices in contributing to the emergence of a vital culture of design and research. Since the 1990s, this dynamic process has been recorded in the series of Architectural Yearbooks, published bi-annually by the Flemish Architectural Institute, VAi.
As part of the International Showcase, architects and writers from different generations will discuss the state of architecture in this European region and the quintessentially Flemish contribution to European architecture.

Lina Bo Bardi embraced the social values of the Modernist movement, translating her ideas for a better society into a tangible reality. This exhibition, curated by Noemi Blager, examines her extraordinary work and her influence in Brazil, the country she adopted as home. The exhibition pays tribute to Bo Bardi’s objective of incorporating local and popular culture in her projects.
Consisting of a display of artefacts by Madelon Vriesendorp and a film installation by Tapio Snellman, the exhibition seeks to reenact the experience of Lina’s projects. The exhibition is sponsored by Arper and hosted and supported by the British Council.

BELBRABFACHNCZEFINHUNJPNNLDLONNORPERPOLROMSLESDNSWESUITZAUSAUZBZWE
BRABFACHNCZEFINHUNJPNNLDLONNORPERPOLROMSLESDNSWESUITZAUSAUZBZWESince 2006 the SOS – SaveOurSkills ‘Projet de Tissage’ has
picked up the ancient economic and cultural threads of cotton – Africa’s ‘White Gold’ – and sought to preserve the continent’s indigenous handloom weaving skills.
The project helps craftsmen cross over from purely traditional to contemporary creativity without losing their cultural identities, in the hope that these ancient weaving skills can be preserved for future generations.
In one of Africa’s poorest countries, the project involves both design and product and marketing development to make this rural cottage industry more profitable for it’s craftsmen. It aims to raise public awareness of cotton’s historical, commercial and cultural importance.
The exhibition traces the history and products of authentic hand-woven cotton stripcloth from the Mosse master weavers of Burkina Faso, West Africa, and features a master weaver who will be demonstrating his skill on the traditional Mosse handloom.

t Numerous high profile projects completed in China over recent years has resulted in worldwide interest in architecture within China. This event will showcase recent developments in Chinese architecture, highlight emerging trends and introduce important Chinese architects to the world.
Within contemporary practice in China, many architects are striving to integrate Chinese traditions within contemporary design, and to address the challenges of new technologies whilst also balancing philosophy and the condition of the architecture profession, to create a new sense of impact. The economic growth in China has resulted in numerous opportunities; however the increasing gap between the rich and the poor will inevitably create a marked difference in architectural demand across different classes, responding to this will be the next big challenge for emerging Chinese architects.
For this event leading Chinese and internationalarchitects are invited to comprehensively discuss these topics, the Chinese market and the changing context.

This exhibition focuses on the iconic Kintaikyõ, or ‘Brocade-Sash Bridge’, first built in 1673CE over the Nishiki River in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture in western Japan. A masterful example of engineering in wood, its beauty and form are celebrated throughout Japan. It is rebuilt every 20 years to ensure its survival. In this way, the important technological knowledge is passed down through the generations.
This year, students from Kingston University, supported by tutors Tim Gough and Takeshi Hayatsu, have recreated an elegant and robust one-third scale, sustainably-sourced timber interpretation of one of the five arches of the bridge in the Embassy of Japan in London.

Lima is developing its infrastructure with the Metropolitano and Tren Electrico public transport projects. The effects of these projects on the city and the expectations of Lima’s citizens create new architectural questions of use, order and disorder, connection and marginalisation. How will the new projects integrate with the existing fabric of the city?
This exhibition visually documents these architectural projects in a city still in its teens and the logistical and cultural questions that arise. Curated via a social network platform, the exhibition shows different perspectives from a community of professionals, students and academics.

Vlad Tenu’s award-winning sculpture, MinimalComplexity, is a product of architectural research focusedon the form-finding and fabrication of minimal surfacestructures. Computationally generated, the surfacesuse an algorithmic process inspired by principles ofself-organisation found in nature, while conforming tovarious construction and digital fabrication parameters.Modularity and efficiency are improved through therepetition of identical components, creating intricatelycomplex surfaces with only a few types of component.Such surfaces have applications in architecture, productdesign and even fashion design.
Vlad Tenu is a Romanian architect based in London. His ongoing research focuses on generative computational methods, digital fabrication techniques and interactive design.

This exhibition contains photographs and technical drawings of three Freetown neighbourhoods, within their topographical and historical context in the city.
A display of early timber-framed Krio architecture in the downtown Tower Hill District will include photographs by Tim Hetherington and Sullivan Khallon and measured drawings from a survey by students from of the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Design this year.
Also on display will be surveys of timber colonial bungalows in the Hill Station district, perched high on an escarpment overlooking Kaningo in the Lumley Valley, the third neighbourhood in the exhibition. Here, students and research staff have been involved with the recent post-conflict construction of a modest school building.

In July 2011, South Sudan’s dreams of independence became reality when it broke away from the north and was reborn as the Republic of South Sudan – the world’s youngest country. Now, its people are facing the challenges of building a nation from scratch.
The documentary film Our Bright Stars shows the South Sudanese peoples’ expectations of their new country and their efforts to build it as a nation, giving a worldwide audience an understanding of the fledgling country.
Using personal interviews of people in their homes and shots of the South Sudanese landscape, the film is an intimate and emotional journey, providing an insight into the people of South Sudan, their views on citizenship and national identity and the country’s cultural diversity.

For the London Design Festival 2012, Gallery Libby Sellers presents Hot Tools – an exhibition of exquisite and intrepid glass works by the Product Design Master students of ECAL, the University of Art and Design Lausanne.
The exhibition is the culmination of a student workshop led by designer Ronan Bouroullec and glassblower Matteo Gonet. The designers’ brief was to challenge conventions of glass making, but also the types of objects that such extraordinary processes could procure. The exhibition will feature works by graduate designers Rita Botelho, Diane du Chaxel, Sasha Duquesne, Philipp Grundhöfer, Felix Klingmüller, Charles Mathis, Giulio Parini and Jung-Cheng Su.
With generous support from the Swiss Cultural Fund in Britain.

This year Taiwan Design Centre presents Fresh Taiwan. The exhibition organisers have selected 18 local brands and 70 pieces of greatly original design to present at Tent London this September. The mysterious Asian culture and unique design characteristics that are cultivated on the precious island of Taiwan will, during this fascinating festival, be revealed.
Fresh Sense - Taiwan presents a range of creative design works, from furniture and home wear to designer’s accessories. This exhibition rediscovers the charm of so-called old fashioned materials, such as bamboo, straw, wood and rush grass. By exploring the features of the materials in a new way, many traditional crafts are used to create modern home accessories while the beauty of nature remains clearly manifested.
Together we will show the best designs and most creative ideas from Taiwan here at the Fresh Sense - Taiwan. Come and explore the enchantment of Taiwan design with us!

SUITWNTZAUSAUZBZWE Live link to Anza
As part of 100% Design’s International Seminar Series, join Vicky Richardson, Director of Architecture, Design, Fashion at the British Council, as she links up to the rest of the ANZA team in Tanzania. While half of the team are creating issue three of the magazine here in London, we will link back to ANZA and friends to talk about the transformation of East-African cities- and their identities- by looking at past, present, and future of architecture and design in the region.
ANZA magazine was created by a vibrant group of university students and recent graduates and is dedicated to exploring people and spaces through in-depth articles, images, scenes and discussions. Its mission is to increase understanding of evolving East-African cities and their identities and to enrich urban living space – by looking at past, present, and future – in both serious and lighthearted ways.
ANZA will be partnering with RIBA Journal and Public Works to publish their third issue during the London Design Festival and a series of workshops, talks and events will take place alongside the magazine’s production at Allies and Morrison.
The theme for this new issue is “My City” and focuses on cities like Kampala, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Kigali and Bujumbura, aiming to discover the specific systems of organisation in the city and how cities influence their citizens and vice-versa.

America Made Me is a celebration of contemporary American design; a showcase of the spirit, personality and talent that fuels some of the country’s most exciting designers and manufacturers today.
Bernhardt Design, in collaboration with curators Adriana Gelves and Dominique Gonfard of Lerival, brings this first-of-its-kind group show and talk series to DesignJunction to present the European community with the best in emerging American design.
Representing roughly 80,000 members worldwide, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) is the most influential voice for the US architectural community. With a growing number of international chapters, it is gaining influence throughout the global architectural community.
AIA United Kingdom joins AIA New York to exhibit the winners of their Annual Design Awards Programs, representing design excellence in a wide range of project typologies.
The AIA UK Excellence in Design Awards selected four projects for ‘award’ and five for ‘design commendation’. Emerging future talent was recognised with the Noel Hill Student Travel Award. The AIA New York Chapter’s Design Awards selected 36 projects, representing exceptional work by AIA New York Chapter members and other architects practicing in New York in four categories: architecture, interiors, un-built work, and urban design.

Since ancient times, the strong vertical line of the minaret, surrounded by the horizontal lines of buildings woven in a complex network of narrow lanes, has defined the vista of the Central Asian town.
This exhibition shows a series of black and white photographs in which lines interact and converge, carrying on a never-ending dialogue between the vertical and the horizontal. Static horizontals and verticals are intersected by shadows that divide the surfaces into dark and light areas, creating depth and adding motion to the cityscape.
In the contrast between the constant, unmoving lines of the structures and the fleeting shadows, we can see the ephemeral events of time passing over unchanged eternal values. As life continues, the town flows along and across the lines of streets and the vortexes of squares.
Building Baskets challenges preconceptions of contemporary Zimbabwean crafts, showcasing a two-year collaborative design project between the Lupane Women’s Centre – a basket weaving enterprise that promotes the social empowerment of marginalised groups – and the Design and Business Schools of Kingston University.
Working with 26 highly skilled crafters in Lupane, the exhibition showcases prototypes and craft inspired by the projects of Product and Furniture students. The Zimbabwe workshop gave the weavers time and space to explore their creativity, craft and identities.
Building Baskets is part of Project Kingston Africa, curated by Catherine McDermott and Candice O’Brien, designed by Simon Maidment and Carl Clerkin with the collaboration of graphic designer Pali Palavathanan (Johnson Banks) and SIF Harare.
