Background on IARPC The Arctic Research and Policy Act of 1984

(ARPA),Public Law 98 -37 3 , Ju ly 31, 1984 ,a s

am ended by Public Law 101-609, N ovem ber

16, 1990 ,p rov ides for a comprehensive na tiona l

policy dea lin g with nationa l research needs and

objectives in the Arctic. The ARPA es ta b lis hes

an Arctic Research Commission (ARC) and an

In te ragency Arctic Research Policy C o m m itte e

(IARPC) to help im p lem ent the Act. IARPC w as

fo rm a lly c rea te d by Executive O rder 12501. Its

activities have been coord in a ted by the N a tiona l

Science Foundation (NSF),with the Director of the

NSF as chair. On July 22, 201 0 , P res ident O ba m a

issued a M em orandu m for the Director of the

O ffice of Science and Technology Policy m ak ing

the N a tiona l Science and Technology C ou nc il

respons ib le for the IARPC with the Director of the

NSF rem a in ing as Chair of the com m ittee .
