INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY
Innovation and technology supports agricultural production by adding value throughout to value chain and contributing to a knowledge-based econ-omy. Emerging technologies and industries can use waste and low value by-products to develop new and expanding market applications.
• Strength as the centre for research and develop-ment
• Machinery and equipment manufacturing, supply and service sectors
• Targeted agri-food and fertilizer production• Access to global markets through its integrated
road, rail and international air service12
Biotechnology Agricultural biotechnology involves tools employed to understand and manipulate the genetic makeup of organisms for use of the production or process-ing of agricultural products. Emphasis has been placed on developing addition-al value-added products from crops and livestock, such as nutraceutical. Alberta is making substantial investments in bioindustrial products from renew-able sources, converting non-crop plants and agri-cultural and forestry waste, into biofuels, biolubri-cants and biochemical.3
