PROGRESS IN AGRICULTURE

• India’s record of progress in agriculture over the past four decades has been quite impressive. The agriculture sector has been successful in keeping pace with rising demand for food.

• India has many huge mountains which abound in fruit-trees of every kind, and many vast plains of great fertility. . . . The greater part of the soil, moreover, is under irrigation, and consequently bears two crops in the course of the year. . .

Changing Land-Use and Future of Agriculture

• According to the latest Agricultural Census in 1970-71 there were 70 million holdings operating 162 million ha. By 1990-91 there were 105 million holdings operating 165 million ha.

SUCCESS

• The success of this strategy was made possible by development and availability of replicable production technology packages, so called ‘Green Revolution’ technologies.

MAINTAINING ITS UNITY AND INTERGRITY

• This is the most important achievement of India since independence because India has survived its modern map despite diverse challenges. More importantly, despite such challenges India’s secular fabric and its amazing unity in diversity have remained intact.

INDIA’S VIBRANT DEMOCRACY

• India has remained an island of democracy amid a vast ocean of autocratic rules in the neighbourhood. India has been a pulsating, throbbing democracy and has emerged as the largest democracy in the world.

COMMON MAN

• Few other countries in the world would have taken up such programs and implemented these with India. The list is long, but on top of the Right to Information (RTI), Right to Education (RTE) and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

INDIA’S SPACE PROGRAMME

• India has sewn up space agreements with over 20 countries. More importantly, it is now preparing for its Mars Mission in December 2013

THE NUCLEAR AND MISSILE PROGRAMME

• The nuclear program and the missile program form an integral part of this. India has been running the two programs simultaneously and successfully.
