The EurAsia Info Summit 2016 in Davos (Switzerland), focusing on
B2B Precision Manufacturing Matchmaking, is supported by many
officials, Chinese municipal governments and several associations.
The summit has been initiated by EurAsia Info in Switzerland and will
be hosted jointly with the World Association of Chinese Mass Media ,
Your Travel China Connect AG , Brugger und Partner AG and others.
The meetings in Technopark are organized in cooperation with the
Swiss-Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
EurAsia Info, headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland is editing the only
Chinese-English bilingual media in Europe and the only printed
Chinese news magazine in Switzerland. EurAsia Info’s goal is to
promote the business and cultural communication and cooperation
between China and Switzerland and serve as a bridge between the
two countries. Our vision is to “show China to the world and support
the internationalization of Chinese companies”. We report the latest
news, publish executive interviews and also organize high level
international business meetings.
Switzerland is a unique country famous for its economy and financial
industry as well as its natural beauty. Innovation and pragmatism
enable this tiny European country to be at the forefront of developed
countries worldwide and to maintain its strong stable economical and
financial position. Based in Switzerland, focusing on China and facing
the world, we aim for making a significant contribution to mutual
understanding and strategic partnership between Europe and Asia.
Swiss precision manufacturing industry is perceived as “superior
quality” by Chinese consumers. The production scale of these top
brand companies is not large, however, their products are
irreplaceable. As Chinese people have a strong preference for Swiss
quality, the industrial and trade structures of the two countries can
complement each other. Our summit will help the two sides to realize
further mutual benefits and a win-win cooperation.

FOREWORD

Welcome Address Swiss-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SCCC)
Dear Friends,
The Swiss-Chinese Chamber of Commerce welcomes the idea of
bringing Chinese and Swiss enterprises together in order to encourage
and initiate co-operations between the companies. We are very happy
to cooperate with EurAsia Info on the corresponding event in
Technopark in Zurich and would like to invite you to join us for this great
opportunity. We are looking forward to welcoming you in Zurich soon!

In response to “One belt and one road”
China’s contribution to global economic growth
The Chinese Ambassador to Switzerland, Mr. GENG Wenbing, has accepted EurAsia
Info’s executive interview and pointed out that the world economy was going through a
weak recovery in the recent past and every country was facing new severe challenges.
Against that background, China initiated the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative,
comprising the “Silk Road Economic Belt” and the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” a
comprehensive network of railways, roads, air and sea links, pipelines and
transmission grids connecting China to Europe and the wider world, enabling common
prosperity and regional stability.
OBOR is a important link connecting the Asian-Pacific economy circle with the
European economic circle. Currently, the 16+1 framework of dialogue between China
and countries in Central and Eastern Europe and the development strategies between
China and European countries and districts including Germany and Czech Republic,
are all exploring a way to link with OBOR..
As China and Europe are pushing forward structural reforms and stimulating the
vitality of the economic society, this will produce more cooperation opportunities and
programs if the countries along the route can connect their development strategies
with OBOR. Mr. GENG believes that OBOR can promote the development of a
comprehensive strategic partnership between Europe and China from which Chinese
and European people will benefit.
Sino-Swiss Bilateral Relations have Great Potential, Establish International
Cooperate Relationships
Switzerland is the first country with whom China has established the Innovative
Strategic Partnership. Switzerland was the first Western country to set up a joint
industrial venture with China. Switzerland was also among the first countries to
recognize China’s market economy statues.
The China-Switzerland Free Trade Agreement marks an important milestone of
deepening and developing bilateral relations between the two countries. Along the
road, Switzerland and China have jointly cultivated a cooperative spirit featuring
equality, innovation and win-win to move the bilateral cooperation up to a new height.
China is the world’s 2nd largest economy and Switzerland is the 19th which is a
economic and financial world power. Last year, China’s economic growth rate
contributed to the world economy by over 25%.China will also be the main engine and
motivation for the world economy in the next few years.
Switzerland is honored as “Innovation Nation” and has topped the list of the Global
Innovation Index for many years. China’s innovation-driven development strategy can
combine with Switzerland’s innovation advantage and achieve an outcome which is
bigger than the sum of the parts.
I firmly believe that as long as we adhere to innovation and cooperation, we cannot
only promote the economic development of both countries but also contribute to the
world’s economic recovery.

Chinese Economy
China is the world's second largest economy by nominal GDP and the world's largest economy by purchasing power parity
according to the IMF. Until 2015, China was the world's fastest-growing major economy, with growth rates averaging 10%
over 30 years. Due to historical and political facts of China's developing economy, China's public sector accounts for a
bigger share of the national economy than the burgeoning private sector.
China is a global hub for manufacturing, and is the largest manufacturing economy in the world as well as the largest
exporter of goods in the world. China is also the world's fastest growing consumer market and second largest importer of
goods in the world.
China is the largest trading nation in the world and plays a vital role in international trade and has increasingly engaged in
trade organizations and treaties in recent years. China became a member of the World Trade Organization in 2001. China
also has free trade agreements with several nations, including Australia, South Korea, ASEAN, New Zealand, Switzerland
and Pakistan.
Xi Jinping’s Chinese Dream is described as achieving the "Two 100s": the material goal of China becoming a "moderately
well-off society" by 2021, the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, and the modernization goal of China
becoming a fully developed nation by 2049, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic.
As of 2015, there was talk of a "slowing" Chinese economy, but that referred to a slowing of the rate of economic growth not
to a recession. The slowdown manifested in industrial regions as excess capacity in basic industries such as coal, steel, and
cement, in the auto industry as reduced sales.
Financial and banking system
Most of China's financial institutions are state owned and governed and 98% of banking assets are state owned. The chief
instruments of financial and fiscal control are the People's Bank of China (PBC) and the Ministry of Finance, both under the
authority of the State Council. The PBC is responsible for international trade and other overseas transactions. Remittances
by overseas Chinese are managed by the Bank of China (BOC), which has a number of branch offices in several countries.
Other financial institutions that are crucial, include the China Development Bank (CDB), which funds economic development
and directs foreign investment; the Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), which provides for the agricultural sector; the China
Construction Bank (CCB), which is responsible for capitalizing a portion of overall investment and for providing capital funds
for certain industrial and construction enterprises; and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), which conducts
ordinary commercial transactions and acts as a savings bank for the public.
Currency system
The renminbi ("people's currency") is the currency of China, denominated as the yuan, subdivided into 10 jiao or 100 fen.
The renminbi is issued by the People's Bank of China, the monetary authority of China. The ISO 4217 abbreviation is CNY,
although also commonly abbreviated as "RMB". The renminbi is held in a floating exchange-rate system managed primarily
against the US dollar. On 21 July 2005, China revalued its currency by 2.1% against the US dollar and, since then has
moved to an exchange rate system that references a basket of currencies and has allowed the renminbi to fluctuate at a
daily rate of up to half a percent.
Since the late-2000s, China has sought to internationalize the renminbi. As of 2013, the RMB is the 8th most widely traded
currency in the world. In November 2015 in advance of G-20 and IMF meetings, IMF director Christine Lagarde announced
her support for adding the yuan to the SDR currency basket. The announcement gave 'green-light' to official approval at the
November 30 IMF meeting.
Industry and manufacturing
In 2009 around 8% of the total manufacturing output in the world came from China itself and China ranked third worldwide
in industrial output that year (first was EU and second United States). In 2010 China contributed to 19.8% of world's
manufacturing output and became the largest manufacturer in the world that year, after the US had held that position for
about 110 years.
Major industries include mining and ore processing; iron and steel; aluminium; coal; machinery; armaments; textiles and
apparel; petroleum; cement; chemical; fertilizers; food processing; automobiles and other transportation equipment
including rail cars and locomotives, ships, and aircraft; consumer products including footwear, toys, and electronics;
telecommunications and information technology. China has become a preferred destination for the relocation of global
manufacturing facilities. Its strength as an export platform has contributed to incomes and employment in China.
Science and technology
Science and technology in China has in recent decades developed rapidly. The Chinese government has placed emphasis
through funding, reform, and societal status on science and technology as a fundamental part of the socio-economic
development of the country as well as for national prestige. China has made rapid advances in areas such as education,
infrastructure, high-tech manufacturing, academic publishing, patents, and commercial applications and is now in some
areas and by some measures a world leader. China is now increasingly targeting indigenous innovation and aims to reform
remaining weaknesses. These initiatives are dependent on attracting highly educated overseas Chinese back to China to
work in the innovation economy and to teach the next generation of Chinese students.
Introduction to China
歐亞時報www.EurAsiaInfo.ch
Telecommunications
China's number of Internet users or netizens topped 137 million by the end of 2006, an increase of 23.4% from a year
before and 162 million by June 2007, making China the second-largest Internet user after the United States, according
to China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII). China's mobile phone penetration rate was 34% in 2007. In 2006,
mobile phone users sent 429 billion text messages. For 2006, the number of fixed-lines grew by 79%, mainly in the
rural areas.
Luxury goods
Luxury spending in China has skyrocketed, an indicator of the country's newfound wealth. For example, the Chinese
bottled water industry is forecast to more than double in size in 2008, becoming a $10.5 billion industry. Meanwhile, as
those who once had no recourse but low-quality tap water take advantage of its availability in supermarkets, those
who had little or no running water are now capitalising on its availability. Tap water production and supply is expected
to grow by 29.3% in 2008, to $11.9 billion.
The LVMH Group who owns major luxury brands including Louis Vuitton apparel, Moët & Chandon wines and
champagne and Hennessy cognacs, reported earnings growth of over 25% in 2007 in China, with the country
accounting for around 16% of LVMH's global business.
External trade
International trade makes up a sizeable portion of China's overall economy. China's global trade exceeded $4.16
trillion at the end of 2013. It first broke the $100 billion mark in 1988, $200 billion in 1994, $500 billion in 2001, $1
trillion mark in 2004, $2 trillion mark in 2007,$3 trillion mark in 2011and $4 trillion mark in 2013.
The vast majority of China's imports consists of industrial supplies and capital goods, notably machinery and high-
technology equipment, the majority of which comes from the developed countries, primarily Japan and the United
States. Regionally, almost half of China's imports come from East and Southeast Asia, and about one-fourth of
China's exports go to the same destinations. About 80 percent of China's exports consist of manufactured goods, most
of which are textiles and electronic equipment, with agricultural products and chemicals constituting the remainder.
Foreign investment
China's investment climate has changed dramatically with more than two decades of reform. Since the early 1990s,
the government has allowed foreign investors to manufacture and sell a wide range of goods on the domestic market,
eliminated time restrictions on the establishment of joint ventures, provided some assurances against nationalization,
allowed foreign partners to become chairs of joint venture boards, and authorized the establishment of wholly foreign-
owned enterprises. In 1991, China granted more preferential tax treatment for Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprises and
contractual ventures and for foreign companies, which invested in selected economic zones or in projects encouraged
by the state, such as energy, communications and transportation.
Chinese investment abroad
Outward foreign direct investment is a new feature of Chinese globalization, where local Chinese firms seek to make
investments in both developing and developed countries. It was reported in 2011 that there was increasing investment
by capital rich Chinese firms in promising firms in the United States. Such investments offer access to expertise in
marketing and distribution potentially useful in exploiting the developing Chinese domestic market.
Since 2005 when Lenovo acquired IBM's ThinkPad, Chinese companies have been actively expanding outside of
China, in both developed and developing countries. In 2013, Chinese companies invested US$90 billion globally in
non-financial sectors, 16% more than 2012.
Tourism
China's tourism industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in the national economy and is also one of the
industries with a very distinct global competitive edge. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, travel and
tourism directly contributed CNY 1,362 billion (US$216 billion) to the Chinese economy (about 2.6% of GDP)
In 2011, total international tourist arrivals was 58 million, and international tourism receipts were US$48 billion.
Domestic tourism market makes up more than 90% of the country's tourism traffic, and contributes more than 70% of
total tourism revenue. In 2002, domestic tourists reached 878 million and tourism revenue was $46.9 billion. A large
middle class with strong consumption power is emerging in China, especially in major cities. China's outbound tourists
reached 20.22 million in 2003, overtaking Japan for the first time.

Swiss Economy
Switzerland is the wealthiest country in the world per capita in multiple rankings, and the income per capital is the
highest in the world. Due to its secure financial system and banking secrecy, it attracts a lot of investors from all
over the world. Besides, it has low unemployment and budget deficit. With a well-developed financial industry, the
service sector plays an increasingly important role in the Swiss economy.
The World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report recently ranks Switzerland’s economy as the most
competitive in the world, while ranked by the European Union as Europe’s most innovative country. In 2005 the
median household income in Switzerland was 96,500 CHF. Switzerland also has one of the world’s largest
account balances as a percentage of GDP.
Switzerland’s most important economic sector is manufacturing. Manufacturing consists largely of the production of
specialist chemicals, health and pharmaceutical goods, scientific and precision measuring instruments and musical
instruments. The largest exported goods are chemicals (34% of exported goods), machines/electronics (20.9%),
and precision instruments/watches (16.9%). Exported services amount to a third of exports. The service sector –
especially banking and insurance, tourism, and international organizations – is another important industry for
Switzerland.
International Organizations and Institutions in Switzerland
In part because of its policy of neutrality, a large number of international institutions have their seats in Switzerland.
Geneva is the birthplace of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and the Geneva Conventions and, since
2006, hosts the United Nations Human Rights Council. Even though Switzerland is one of the most recent countries
to have joined the United Nations, the Palace of Nations in Geneva is the second biggest centre for the United
Nations after New York, and Switzerland was a founding member and home to the League of Nations.
Apart from the United Nations headquarters, the Swiss Confederation is host to many UN agencies, like the World
Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and about 200 other international
organisations, including the World Trade Organization and the World Intellectual Property Organization. The annual
meetings of the World Economic Forum in Davos bring together top international business and political leaders from
Switzerland and foreign countries to discuss important issues facing the world, including health and the environment.
Furthermore, many sport federations and organisations are located throughout the country, such as the
International Basketball Federation in Geneva, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) in Nyon, the
International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the International Ice Hockey Federation both in Zürich,
the International Cycling Union in Aigle, and the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne.
Multinational Corporations in Switzerland
Switzerland is home to several large multinational corporations. The largest Swiss companies by revenue are
Clencore, Gunvor, Nestle, Novartis, Hoffmann-La Roche, ABB, Mercuria Energy Group and Adecco. Also, notable
are UBS AG, Zurich Financial Services, Credit Suisse, Barry Callebaut, Swiss Re, Tetra Pak, The Swatch Group
and Swiss International Air Lines. Switzerland is ranked as having one of the most powerful economies in the world.
Mainly relied on sophisticated industrial exports and tourism, its controversial banking secrecy also attracts many
rich people to Switzerland regularly to handle with their property issues and spend their vocations here. It has a
quite open and liberal personnel policy, the expatriate population is about 1.249 million, accounting for a quarter of
the whole working population, most of them being high-tech talents. The apprenticeship in technical and vocational
education system is very important, the country has developed a unique VET(Vocational Education Training) and
PET(Professional Education Training) system, usually two days per week in school and three days in factory.
Employment in Switzerland
Switzerland has a more flexible job market than its neighboring countries and the unemployment rate is very low.
The unemployment rate increased from a low of 1.7% in June 2000 to a peak of 4.4% in December 2009 and was
back at 3.2% in 2014. Population growth from net immigration is quite high, at 0.52% of population in 2004. The
foreign citizen population was 21.8% in 2004, about the same as in Australia. GDP per hour worked is the world's
16th highest, at 49.46 international dollars in 2012.
Tax rates in Switerland
Switzerland has overwhelmingly low tax rates by Western standards; overall taxation is one of the smallest of the
developed countries. Switzerland is a relatively easy place to do business, currently ranking 26 th of 178 countries.
According to Credit Suisse, only about 37% of residents own their own homes, one of the lowest rates of home
ownership in Europe. Housing and food price levels were 171% and 145% of the EU-25 index in 2007, compared to
113% and 104% in Germany.
Introduction of Switzerland
歐亞時報www.EurAsiaInfo.ch
Politics in Switzerland
The Swiss Parliament consists of two houses: the Council of States and the National Council. The Federal Council
constitutes the federal government, directs the federal administration and serves as collective Head of State. The
President of the Confederation is elected by the Assembly from among the seven members, traditionally in rotation
and for a one-year term.
Direct democracy and federalism are hallmarks of the Swiss political system. The instruments of this system at the
federal level, known as civic rights (Volksrechte, droits civiques), include the right to submit a constitutional initiative
and a referendum, both of which may overturn parliamentary decisions. In Switzerland there’s an average of seven
votes or elections (not including the local votes or election) per year.
Traditionally, Switzerland has been neutral, only in 2002 did Switzerland become a full member of the United Nations.
Switzerland maintains diplomatic relations with almost all countries and historically has served as an intermediary
between other states. Switzerland is not a member of the European Union.
Geography
Extending across the North and South side of the Alps in west-central Europe. The neighboring countries are
Germany, Austria, France, Italy and Liechtenstein, Switzerland encompasses a great diversity of landscapes and
climates on a limited area of 41,285 square kilometers. The population is about 8 million, resulting in an average
population density of around 195 people per square kilometer. The more mountainous southern half of the country is
far more sparsely populated than the northern half. In the largest Canton of Graubünden, lying entirely in the Alps,
population density falls to 27 /km².
Traffic
Switzerland has the most dense rail network in Europe, because it is a landlocked country, its connection to foreign
countries mainly relies on aircraft and railway transportation. Swiss railway network is well developed, the major train
stations can ensure connection to other main cities every hour and it’s famous for its short waiting time for transfer,
punctual, safety, comfortable and effeciency.
International Airports
Zurich Airport is Switzerland's largest international flight gateway. The other international airports are Geneva Airport
EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, Bern Airport, Lugano Airport, St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport and Sion Airport.
Culture
Switzerland has four official languages: principally German, French, Italian and Romansh. Learning one of the other
national languages at school is compulsory for all Swiss pupils, so many Swiss are supposed to be at least bilingual,
especially those belonging to linguistic minority groups.
Cuisine
The cuisine of Switzerland is multifaceted. While some dishes such as fondue, raclette or rösti are omnipresent
through the country, each region developed its own gastronomy according to the differences of climate and languages.
Traditional Swiss cuisine uses ingredients similar to those in other European countries, as well as unique dairy
products and cheeses such as Gruyère or Emmental, produced in the valleys of Gruyères and Emmental.
Swiss Watches
For centuries, Switzerland has been world-renowned for its watches.
Watchmaking only began in Switzerland after the Huguenot refugees
brought the manufacture of portable timepieces to Geneva in the
second half of the 16th century. It has more than 500 years history and
is connected closely to the jewelry industry which is related to culture,
art and religion.
Accurate time, precision machinery, beautiful design, status symbol,
noble value are cultural characteristics of the Swiss watches. Swiss
watch culture, with its high quality, excellent technology in the world,
has become the pride of Swiss industry.
