Dynamic Analysis of Dam-Reservoir System

MAIN CONCLUSIONS• The Dam-Reservoir interaction effect on the responses of a selected concrete gravity dam subjected to ground

motion excitation is investigated in this study. • The deformations of the dam concrete remain in the elastic range for the assumed stress-strain relationship. • Various responses are extracted using the conducted finite element model utilizing ANSYS code. • Results from modal analysis demonstrate that considering dam-reservoir interaction in analysis affect

significantly both the natural period as well as dam deformation shape.• Results from dynamic analysis demonstrate that considering dam-reservoir interaction in analysis affect

significantly the seismic response of the gravity dam at its heel where maximum responses prevail with respect to responses at dam toe.

• The time history of hydrodynamic pressure exerted on the upstream face of the dam, crest displacement and stresses respond significantly to the coupled fluid-structure system.

• With respect to the feasibility of ANSYS feature in simulating the coupled dam-reservoir interaction effects on gravity dam seismic response it proves to be appropriate enough.
