IDEA StatiCa Steel is used by engineers dealing with members, joints, connections, details and cross-sections
of steel structures. Its functionality is organized into modules depending on the member which is to be analyzed
and designed - Connection, Beam, Column, Frame etc.
We have created a unique method for structural analysis and design of connections called component-based finite
element model (CBFEM). Engineers can work with joints, connections and footing without limitation in shapes
and loading. Templates for most-used connections are available. Choose from frequently-used or general cross-
sections and wide range of hot rolled and sheet welded members. IDEA Connection, with CBFEM method
in its core, is:

Changing steel joint and connection design
IDEA Connection and CBFEM method are results of our long-term R&D efforts in the area of structural design
and check of steel structure joints. In 2013, after years of preparations, we teamed up with top Czech universities
and after 2 years of intensive development, testing and verifying a new tool for steel engineers was born.
IDEA Connection with CBFEM provides precise checks, results of strength, stiffness and buckling analysis of steel
joint. Bolts, welds, concrete blocks are checked according to common design formulas.
IDEA CSS, Beam, Column, Frame
This package of modules gives our customers powerfull tool for complete design of steel members.
It provides comprehensive ULS/ SLS code checks and strength, buckling and fire resistance design
according to Eurocode EN 1993-1-1 with National Annexes. Unique FEA calculation of cross-section
properties and stress distribution is available.

Component Based Finite Element Model of steel joints
Engineers typically design steel connections that follow prescribed building code requirements based on lab empirical testing,
computational model verification and engineering judgment. However, many projects have situations where the connection
design must be validated using engineering judgment or even perform a more comprehensive connection analysis.
These practices have several challenges:
First, when designing non-typical connection designs not explicitly covered by the building codes, the engineer may not have
the experience to just use engineering judgment unless they use time-intensive, computational modeling and simulation methods.
Second, creating such computational models to study and validate connection behavior can consume a lot of time on projects,
impacting profitability.
Third, the reliability of steel connection designs can vary from project to project. In fact, when deviations happen in fabrication
and erection, the actual connection behavior may perform quite differently than anticipated.
Therefore, engineers are looking for a more accurate, project-specific way of studying connection behavior to better understand
their connection designs, while doing so productively.

R&D project IDEA Connection
Research and development team for this project was formed by core employees of IDEA RS (Lubomír Šabatka & team) and
academic staff from two Czech universities FCE CTU Prague (prof. František Wald & team) and FCE VUT Brno
(prof. Miroslav Bajer & team). We put together long-term experience with development of component method (CM), practical
experience with design of steel structures and proven professional experience with FEM and SW development.
We started in 2013 with a question:
“Can we analyze steel joints in a more precise and general way?”
We know the answer today:

Geometry of joint, manufacturing operations
Input or joint geometry is a very easy process. Of course rolled, welded or cold formed cross-sections are supported. Model of
a joint is created by operations according to real-life manufacturing what makes modeling intuitive. All steel plates have precise
shapes which can be used for drawings or in CAD/CAM.

Bolts and welds are modeled as special nonlinear springs with predefined stress-strain diagram. For the connecting
components we developed unique interpolation constrains. As you see each bolt or weld of the jointis checked thoroughly.

Stiffness analysis of connections
• Rotational and translational stiffness of any
connection in joint can be determined
• Classification of connection is done.

Local buckling analysis of joint
• Buckling is an important issue for the design
of steel structure.
• CBFEM works with the assumption that all 1D members
are designed properly in 3D model of the structure.
Only local effects in joints are investigated.
• Thin plates in pressure like webs, flanges,
ribs etc. can cause the collapse of steel joint.
• CBFEM calculates stability on the same model
as for stress/strain analysis.

We develop and sell software for structural engineers/consultants, construction authorities and all others who perform/

We started developing IDEA StatiCa® in 2010. This enabled us to build it using modern program architecture and innovative
