MIDDLE ISLAND---Girl ScoutSunday was celebrated March 11at the Middle Island PresbyterianChurch with a special service inhonor of the growing, world-wide Girl Scout movement. GirlScouts, Brownies and TroopLeaders attended the regularworship service in full uniformand sat as a group.

The girls joined the almost3 1/2 million other Girl Scoutsin the United States who markedthe 50th Anniversary of the foun-ding of the first Girl Scout Troopin this nation.

It was on March 12, 1912 thatJuliette Low brought fromEngland the principles of scout-ing and adapted them to the needsof girls in the United States. Ina sermon the Rev . Edwin G.Townsend , pastor , pointed outthat it is through work in hertroop that a girl , "learns thebasic rules of interaction withother individuals and groups ofpeople; how to use her handsin practical work , her head tothink , and her heart to showkindly help m meeting the needsof others."

The girls were commended fortheir service to the communityand world as typified by theirwork at Camp Paquatuck forcrippled children and the aidgiven to Algerian Refugee chil-dren.

The Marine Bureau of the Suf-folk County Police Departmenturges all persons using smallboats to exercise extreme cautionthis Spring.

The waters are still very cold .March winds are brisk and un-predictable and much heavierthan an equal wind in warmerweather , and there is debris a-float from recent storms.

Many of the aid s to navigat ionhave been damaged or moved offstatio n because of the severestorms and heavy ice that pre-vailed during the w inter , andsome channels have shifted.Thishampers the average boatman in

using such aids in determinin gcourses .

Anyone f a l l i n g overboard mightbe in danger fro m overexposurebefore it would t* possible toeffect a rescue. Parents of youth-ful boat operators should he part-icularly alert to this seasonalboating hazard.
