P A R T A
As per the plan of action chalked out for the academic year 2007-2008. The
following programmes have been implemented.
A. College Level – General
Plan of Action for 2007-08
The college plans to start PG courses in the self-financing scheme if aided
courses are not granted to the college. It also proposes to apply for Research
Centre in English in addition to the approved Centres of Research in Maths
and Zoology.
Further, the college shall make greater use of its resources and personnel by
establishing Research Centres; in Zoology , Functional English, Chemistry
and Computer Science etc.
Planning to start Continuing Education courses and Add on Courses
Completion of the construction of a new block housing the Co-operative
Store, the NSS and NCC offices, the Student’s Centre and the canteen
Library expansion in terms of number of volumes is an immediate concern
as the number of books in the library is inadequate, especially for PG
courses. We plan to add to the library volumes raising the number of o at
least 15,000 in the coming academic year.
Technology up gradation of the library.
As the college is situated in a tribal area it demands of us the empowerment
of the tribal community through education. The plan is being chalked out and
shall be implemented soon.
Increase in Major and Minor research projects

Introduction of mentor system in the college replacing tutorial system .

renewal programmes for the senior students and faculty improvement

Part B
I. General Activities Reflecting the Goals and Objectives of the
Institution:
Situated on this beautiful hill-top amidst the sprawling greenery and
managed by the Catholic Diocese of Mananthavady, Mary Matha Arts &

Science College, symbolizes the realization of the dreams and aspirations of
the people of North Wayanad.
Revd Fr Jose Kocharackal, the Syncellus of the Education Department of
the Diocese is the Manager and Revd Dr Gervasis Mattom, the Procurator of
the Diocese is the Finance Officer of the College. Fr Michael
Vadakemulanjanal is appointed Asst Bursar of the college.
We have had a few new faculty members inducted into service at the
beginning of the academic year, which began with intense deliberations for
about three days among the Teaching and Administrative Staff in the
presence of the Manager to chalk out a detailed plan for the year ahead. The
Mentoring System, introduced last year has come to stay. The IQAC (the
Internal Quality Assurance Cell) of the college initiated the Information
and Counseling Desk run by the senior students to counsel the prospective
students during the time of Admission. Sri George Thomas, Convener of the
Committee for the Preparation of the College Calendar and Mr Santhosh T.
George brought out the College Calendar on time. Dr Rajeev Thomas
coordinated the Preparation of the Master Time Table and Allotment of
Rooms to various departments. We begin the day singing the College
Anthem dedicating our allegiance to Mother Mary, our heavenly patroness
and to the college, our ‘alma mater’ and wind up the day singing the
National Anthem, feeling proud of being the citizens of the largest
democracy in the world and the land which offers tremendous individual
and social freedom for over sixty years.
The previous academic year was wound up by a Staff Picnic and three days’
Review and Planning for the academic Year 2007-’08. The General Body of
the Cooperative Store of the college met on 29 March 2007 to pass the
annual report. A meeting of the Organizing Committee for the Second Indo-
US Lecture Series on Discrete Mathematical Chemistry was also held on
the same day.
Mr T.A. Abraham was elected Vice President of the PTA.
Regular Classes for the II & III Years started on 4 June 2007. HODs’ and
General Staff Meeting were held on the same day. The college decided to
apply for another unit of the National Service Scheme with Ms Mercy
Ignatius as the Program Officer. Mentors were asked to inform their
students to choose a boy and a girl to represent each class. On 6 June Class

Representatives and Mentors met in the Principal’s chamber and chalked
out plans for the year ahead. On 11 June onwards Dr Thomas Abraham, the
just-retired Prof from the Mahatma Gandhi University led the Week-long
Orientation for the Students, Faculty, and the Administrative Team. The
orientation and induction of the New Faculty was done on the 13 & 14 June.
On 14 & 15 June the Department of Computer Science held the National
Seminar on the Recent Advances in Information Security.
The Second Indo- US International Lecture Series in Mathematics and related
Subjects started in the Woodlands hotel, Kalpetta on the 19 June. Celebrated Scientists
in various fields from across the continents interacted with budding scientists and
researchers from across the country.
Mentoring System
The Mentoring form has been altered significantly this year and a mentoring hour was
set apart every week. News Paper Subscription was introduced in every class. Seventy
copies of the Hindu, Thirty copies of the Business Line and thirty copies of the New
Indian Express were subscribed by the college during the year. Newspaper Reading and
discussion were introduced and encouraged in every class
Work Done Diary for the Faculty and Class Diary for the Class Representatives were initiated on a monthly basis. The Faculty Profile was also invited in early July.
On 24 July the Career Guidance and Placement Cell started its functioning for the year.
On 30 July Freshers and their parents were given orientation in the college auditorium.
On 6 August the Freshers were given a warm welcome by the college community and
they were also given orientation to be inducted into the college community.
On 4 August a Leadership Training Program was arranged for the Senior Class
Representatives and their Supporting Team.
The Women’s Cell started functioning in the college. They had their formal inauguration on 21August. The
Cell organized a Skills Development Course for the benefit of the girl-students of the
college and the matter came reported in Vikasini, the Journal of Women’s
Empowerment.
Exam Clinic
Dr Sudha Devi took the initiative to organize an exam clinic in the college. Mr
Chandramohan, Section Officer from the Kannnur Univ. led the sessions. Mr Maria
Martin coordinated the session on 7 January.
Library

College decided to buy books worth the following: Rs 35,000 in Commerce. Rs 20,000
in Chemistry, and 10, 000 each in English, Maths, Zoology, Computer Science, and
Languages. A hughe chunk of books are donated to the college library by well-wishers
from abroad.
Teachers are expected to encourage top-performing students to win university ranks.
Performance Development Programs
To make the students aware of the goals and objectives of the college, the latest learning
techniques, the requirements for succeeding in various competitive examinations and the
rights and duties of citizenship, a series of two one-day orientation programmes were
conducted for the beginners from 31 July onwards. Value education was also given due
importance in those workshops. The Resource Persons were Fr Francis and Ms Geeta.
A leadership training program for the class representatives was held on 30 June. The
Class Representatives attended a social skills awareness program at Vincentgiri Hospital
too. The Librarian and the Physical Education teacher visited individual classrooms to
create awareness among students on library usage and importance of sports respectively.
Academic Excellence Day was organized by the Staff Association on 14 August. Prof
Bikash Chakravarthy of the ViswaBharathi Univ. delivered a prophetic talk based on
Rabindranath Tagore’s perspective on the role of education in forming free human
beings in a civil society. Fr Manager presided over. The photographs of the Former
Patrons, Managers and Principals were unveiled on that day. Adv. Fr Thomas Therakam
felicitated the gathering. Ms Aruna Liz Mathew was honoured with Dr K.T. Varkey
Endowment Award for the the Best Outgoing Student of the Year. The following
students were awarded the Proficiency prizes for their colourful performance in the
Univ. Exams:

Bishop Mar Emmanuel Pothnamuzhy Memorial Prize, Rs 1000/- instituted by the Staff
Association was awarded to Mr Jinson Jose for securing the highest marks in Part 1
English.
Archbishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy Scholarship, Rs. 1000/- instituted by the
Management for the Toper in BCom. was awarded to Josna Clement.
Rev Msgr Thomas Moolakunnel Scholarship, Rs. 500/- instituted by the Management to
the Topper in BSc Maths was awarded to Anjusha Mary.
Rev Fr George Kizhakachalil Scholarship, Rs. 500/- instituted by the Management for
the Topper in BSc Zoology was awarded to Marsheena T.K.

Cash Award of Rs. 500/- instituted by the Management for the Topper in the B.A.
Examination was awarded t Divya Prabha.

Onam
Onam Celebrations were organized on 23 and 24 August by the NSS with traditional
pomp and gaiety.
The Board of Governors met on Tuesday, 18 September and decided to prepare a
Manual for holding the College Union Elections in the parliamentary style as per the
latest Supreme Court directives.
The College Union Elections were held in the Parliamentary style and the following
office bearers wee elected:

Mid-Year exams scheduled from the 8 -12 October were coordinated by Mr Maria
Martin Joseph, Controller of Exams.
On 5 September Teachers’ Day was observed in a befitting manner..
The Grievance Redressal Cell sat on the 12 September.
Principal attended a combined meeting of Managers and Principals of affiliated colleges
under the Kannur and Calicut universities at Devagiri College, Calicut on 15 September
on the Implementation of the Lingdo Commission Recommendations and latest Supreme
Court directives with regard to holding College.Union Elections.
On 17 September, Lecturer in Commerce Mr Madu left for good to take up govt posting.
On 25 September Students celebrated India winning 20-20 World Cup.
The Preliminary Round of the Power Quiz by the KSEB Officers’ Assn.
AG’s Audit Team visited the college from 16 October.
PTA Executive met and approved the Election Manual

The Dept of Zoology organized an exhibition on 5 & 6 December.
The Final year Zoology students went on study tour from 10 – 14 December.
Dr Raju Mathew Prof. of the University of Calicut addressed the senior students and
faculty.
Rajesh John of the English Dept left for job abroad.
Staff Tour was organized to Coimbatore on the 8 & 9 February. Dr K.T. Varkey, our
Founder Principal offered affectionate hospitality.
The Commerce Dept organized a study tour to Kannur on 24 January.
PTA Executive met in the afternoon of 24 January.

Sebin Abraham of I Yr English was selected to attend the Republic Day Parade in new
Delhi.
The Rev Dr Kaniamattom endowment intercollegiate Elocution was held on 13
February.
On 20 Feb. Smt P. Valsala released the college Magazine 2006-07, focusing on
Wayanad. Fr Manager and Adv. Rev Fr Thomas Therakom felicitated. Various cultural
programs added colour to the day.
The Principal delivered the Annual Day Message at Sarvodaya High School, Eaechome
on 23 Feb.and inaugurated the interschool nursery Kalotsavu at St Patrick’s school on
the same morning. He delivered the annual day message at the Hill Blooms School,
Mndy and St. Joseph’s U.P.School, Kallody too.
On 24 Feb. the Staff Council met to discuss the Kerala state Higher Education Council’s
Draft on Restructuring Degree Education across Kerala and the feedback was
communicated to the Council immediately.
X’mas
Fr Sebastian Puthel delivered the X’mas Message on 18 December. A keyboard is added
to the facilities on campus. The Choir sang the carols, The crib team made a lovely crib.
Mr Biju Joseph coordinated the X’mas celebrations. X’mas gifts were exchanged.
Office Automation
The Meshilogic KKD formally installed the office automation software in the college.
Ms Jisha T.T. and Mr Martin coordinated installing the software and led the Orientation
of both the Teaching and Administrative Teams.
The Faculty Profile is also getting automated shortly.
On 29 Feb. the Principal had an interface with the UGC team at Hyderabad on
sanctioning career oriented courses in the college. As a result, the UGC has sanctioned
Rs. 500000/- to offer Communicative English to students of all departments.
Univ. Exams for the final yr students started on the 8 March.
The Stock Verification of the Library and other Departments are being done during the
last week of March.
Seminars/ Workshops
HODs attended a Workshop on Grading at the Kannur Univesity on 10 January 2008.

Vijesh C.V., Jinson Jose, Bineesh Jose, John T.Joseph, Minu Peter and Anima Krishna
accompanied by Mr Rajesh John Lecturer in English attended the Media Seminar on 08
September at the Pastoral Orientation Centre, Kochi, organized b the KCBC Media
Commision.
Litty Jose and Diana M.C. attended a three days’ Retreat organized by the Jesus Youth at
Athma Darsan Ernakulam.
Wilson Thomas, Binoj E.K., Albin Mathew, Karthika V.K.,and Justin Mathew of the
Dept of English attended the Practical Journalism Workshop on 29 & 30 September at
Kalpetta.
Shiji Paul of II DC Maths and Sangeetha N.K. of III DC Maths participated in the
National Seminar on Globalization and Environmental Hazards – the Kerala
Expereince on 24 & 25 Jan. organized by the Kerala State Council for Science,
Technology and Environment, Trivandru at Govt College for Women, Kannur.
Mr Umesh, Renil, Ms Neenaraj and Neethumol along with Lecturer Jestin Joy of the
Commerce Dept attended the two-day National Seminar on Entrepreneurship
conducted by the Dept of Business Administration, Marian College, Kuttikanam on 14 &
15 March 2008.
The following students represented our college in the Workshop on Theatre on 11 & 12
January at the WMO College, Muttil.
Justin Mathew attended the three-day Media Workshop cum Seminar at Thanmaya,
Jesuit Media Centre, Kottayam under the auspices of the AICUF, Kerala Region. Around
65 students from all over Kerala attended the workshop.
Justin Mathew, Karthika V.K., Albin Mathew, Binoj E.K., and Wilson Thomas attended
a two-day Workshop for Tomorrow’s Journalists on 29 & 30 September at the Uravu
Bamboo Vilage, Thrikarippetta, Kalpetta.
Shyam Shankar E.P. of IYr Chemistry was invited to present a Keerthanam at the
Chembai Sangetholsavam
Orientation / Refresher Courses:
Ms Geetha Antony Pullan, Mr Biju Joseph, Mr George Thomas, and Mr Rakesh Kalia
attended the month-long Refresher Program on Professional Ethics and Audio-Visual
Applications in Collegiate Teaching organized by the Dept of Philosophy, Govt Brennen
College, Thalasserry and sponsored by the Director or /Collegiate Education, in February
2008.
All the HODs attended the Workshop on Grading System at the Kannur Univ. Senate
Hall on 10 January.

ON 22 Feb a Seminar on Right to Information Act was organized in the college by Dr
P.K. Prasadan. Mr Ali Azgar Pazha led the sessions.
Board of Governors
The Board of Governors of the college met on 18 September and deliberated on the
College Union Elections, The H/C Verdict on Courses started after 1998, Infrastructure
Development, and Application for New Courses were also part of the agenda for
discussions..
The Board also advised the College Council to prepare a manual for the College
Union Elections after the recent interim directives of the Supreme Court after the
Lingdo Commission Recommendations.
Infrastructure
A Building Committee was formed for the Preparation of the Infrastructure Plans and
Estimates to be submitted to avail of the grants during the XI Plan period.
UGC Aid
Around 69,000/- Rs were received from the UGC as advance payment for the purchase
of library books
The UGC has offered Rs.5,00,000/- towards Carrier Oriented Course in
Communicative English and Rs 3.48 Lakh for Remedial Coaching for Competitive
Examinations for SC/STs and Minority students beginning 2008-09 academic year.
Scholarships Awarded
The following students were awarded the Thomas Chandy Scholarship(an American
NRI) of Rs 1000 – each during the year: Victor Johnson of IIIYr Zoology, John T.
Joseph, Shinto P.C., and Dennesh Joseph of III Yr English and Martn T.M. Sajay s
Sam, Ajay Baby, and Renil George of II Yr BCom, and Litty Jose and Sukanya S. of of
II Yr English .
Large number of students applied for the minority scholarships and a dozen applied for
the Keralaz Govt Golden Jubilee Scholarship for students from BPL families.
Robin C.P. of I Yr Zoology and Dayana Thomas of II Yr English were awarded
Scholarships of Rs. 1500/- by the AIACHE (All India Association for Christian
Higher Education) , New Delhi.
Awards and Honours

The Principal successfully completed Executive MBA and won the Wayanad District
Prathibha Puranskar instituted by Air India and the Malayala Manorama. He was
interviewed along with 108 shortlisted candidates from across the state for the Award at
the State and National Level.
Mr Rajeev Thomas, Head, Dept of Chemistry is awarded PhD by the Kannur
University.
Extension Activities
The Union Govt has issued a Letter of Intent in favour of establishing a Community
Radio Service in Mananthavady under the auspices of the WAYANAD Social Service
Society. The Community Radio Service is likely to come up on the College campus.
The Dept of Commerce has been continuing the extension work in the adopted village,as
part of the Community Development Program.
Student-Feedback from various clases were taken.
On 17 March Staff Orientation on Office Automation was held in the college. Ms Jisha
T.E. Coordinator of Office Automation led the session.
Evaluation of the Year’s activities were held on 24 March.
Performance Developments Programs for Freshers
On 11 August PD Program in Life Development Skills and in Spoken English was led
by Fr Francis, Ms Geetha, Mr Rajesh, Mr Sabu, Dr Abhilash and Dr Soumya (Clinical
Psychologist).
The Magazine of the previous academic year with a real focus on Wayanad was
released by celebrated writer Smt P. Valsala in late February.
Save Green Club
Organized various competitions in Pencil Drawing, Painting, and Esssay Writing on
relevant topics.
Organized a State Level Seminar on Biodiversity on 3 March.
On 4 & 5 July a few of our students attended the Rain Camp organized by the Pazhassi
Grnadhasala, Mananthavady.
Career Guidance & Placements

Training Program for Final Year Chemistry, Maths and Computer Science Batches on 16
August was coordinated by Mr Rakesh Kalia.
Aswin Jose, Minu Peter, Jinson Jose, Jomit Jose, Remy Candran, Lincy Mathew, and
Santhosh won BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) Placements this year.
Physical Education
Here are the winners of the Kannur Univ. Inter Collegiate Athletic Meet:
Sadique Ali - Silvar Medal for Javline Throw
Vyomin Mathew Bronze Medal for 10 & 200 Meters
Victor Johnson, Antony Mathew, Sushin P.S., and Vyomin Mathew: 4 X 100 Meters
Relay—Bronze Medal.
There was a formal valedictory meet of the sports personnel on 26 Feb.
Shaiju Memorial Footbal competition between the English Dept (Winners of Last Year)
and the Rest of the College was held on 7 February.
NCC
Is affiliated to 1 (K) Artillery Batallion, Tellicherry, under the command of Col.
C.N.Suresh and Lt Dr Rajeev Thomas.
36 cadets were enrolled for the year. A ceremony was organized on 4 August.
Sebin Abraham got selected to the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. He was captain
of the Kerala Lakshadweep Basketball Team and won the championship in Delhi.
Ms Elsa Treasa Jose attended the parachute Jumping Camp in Agra.
S/ UO Renjith Krishnana R. won the Chief Minister’s Award, at Trivandrum.
Sgts Robins K.C. and Shereena P.N. attended the National Integration Camp in West
Bengal.
Bipin Varghese, Elsa Treasa Jose, Josna Jose and Sebin Abraham attended the Pre RDC
camp at Vengeri.
Ranjith Krishnana, Soumya Thomas, attended the National Integreation Camp at
Mananthavady.
Sooraj V., Sooraj K.S., Jils Manuel Thomas, Vigil George, Tijo Thomas, and Nalton
D’souza attended the Army Attachment Camp at Hyderabad.
Bipin Varghese attended the TSC in New Delhi.
34 cadets attended the Annua Training Camp at Peravor and 10 cadets participated in the
Beach Running Program and won the overall championship.
Albin joseph and Jayesh M.G. attended the National Trekking Camp at Kolapur,
Maharastra.

Activities:
On 15 August The Independence Day was ceremoniously observed.
Our Cadets organized a Blood Donation Camp, which was inaugurated by Mr Pradeep
Kumar, IFS, the DFO, Mananthav. Dr TV Surendra, Retd DMO, Dt Hosspital,
Mananthavady was present.
The NCC cadets had their valedictory too.
NSS
An Orientation and two leadership training programs were arranged for the Freshers. Mr
Jose Pallath led the sessions.
Legal Literacy classes were held in the college for the Second Year students.
Onam celebrations were coordinated under the auspices of the NSS. Competitions in
Flower Carpet, Musical Chair, Breaking of the Pot, Arm Wrestling, tug Of War etc were
held. The Volunteers made ‘payasam’ for the college community.
A Legal Literacy Seminar was organizwd on 11 October. Sri Pradeep kumar, Hon’ble
Munsif Magistrated and Chairman, Taluk Legal Services Committee inaugurated. Ms V.
Yasmine, Gen Secretary, Legal Servicesw Committee felicitated. Leading resources
persons led the sessions on Criminal Rules, Legal Awareness and Family Law.
Rev Dr Joseph Kaniamattom Ever Rolling Trophy Elocutions Competition was held on
the 13 February and Mr Noushad Ali of St Mary’s College, Sulthan Bathery won the
Trophy.
Volunteers of the National Service Scheme attended the Tribal Exposure Camp at Thudi.
Around sixty students attended a two day Nature Camp at Chethalayam forest organized
by the Forest Dept Ms near Pulpally on 7, 8, and 9 December 2007.
12 December, NSS Sp. Camp began at Kanavu near Nadavayal.
Ms Mercy coordinated the Blood Grouping operation on the Campus by the Volunteers
of the Red Ribbon Club in record time. The Blood Diary is of immense help to the
community around Mananthavady.
On 12 March the Vols of the NSS organized a Blood Donation Camp on the auspices of
the Red Ribbon Club.
The NSS Special Camping was held during the X’mas holidays at ‘KANAVU’ Tribal

The Management has sanctioned Rs 35,000 for the Comerce Dept. Rs 20,000 for the
Chemistry, and Rs 10,000 /- each for the other Depts, English, Maths, Zoology, and
Malayalam. Journalism, Politics, Statistics were asked to take their shar from their
respective main depts..
The UGC sanctioned about 69,000 /- as advance payment towards the purchase of library

Computer Science
Mr Sabu and Ms Jisha, Lecturers in the Department tookd the Final Year Students on a
study tour to Kochi to expose them to the emerging IT destination.
IDC Computer Science students toured Ernakulam on 2 Nov.
Chemistry
The Final Years went on a study tour accompanied by their teachers went on a study tour
to Ernakulam and Aluva. The team visited FACT, the most prestigious industry in
Kerala, and presented a tour-report as per the Syllabus requirements.
On11 December, seminar on Green Chemistry. Dr P.Ravindran, Reader, Calicut

They went on a picnic to Kadalundi for watching migratory birds along with a flying
visit to the Karipur International Airport. The team also paid a visit to the Puthiyara
fishing harbour and to the Kappadu Beach.
Maths
On 3 October, the Expert Committee started monitoring the ongoing research project in
Maths. 7 October Maths Olympiad was held.
The Second Meeting of the Expert Committee to Review and Monitor the Progress of the
Ongoing Project was held from 22 – 30 October on the campus.
The Committee interacted with the Faculty of the college on the prospects of the XI Plan
proposals.
Ms Jisha Elizbeth Joy and Ms Neena V. are selected eligible for JRF on 17 December
2007 in the Spearhead Project of the Research Centre
His Exe. Bishop Jose Porunnedom released the Newsletter of the Res. Centre in Maths
on 27 March.
Mr Jinu B. George, guest faculty cleared the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in
Engineering) with Score 168. He’ll be leaving the college shortly for his PhD.

The Dept organized a Journalism workshop on 13 September . Mr Manoj K. Das
Resident Editor of the New Indian Express, Kochi deliverd the Keynote Address. Mr
Prashant, bureau Chief, Calicut and Mr Jose Kurian Bureau Chief, Kalpetta led the
sessions.
Research
The Research Advisory Committee met on 16 October to discuss XI Plan prospects. Dr
Germina, Dr Sudha Devi, Dr Prasadan, Dr Rajeev Thomas, and Dr Josep K Job attended.
The Research Centre in Mathematics completed three years of excellent performance.
The Kannur University has sanctioned Research Centre in Zoology this year. Research
Centre in English is awaiting approval shortly.
Elections
On 18Sept. the Board of governors met analysed the campus situation and directed to
prepare a Manual for the conduct of College Union Elections, which is to be held in
Parliamentary Style. Accordingly the manual for elections prepared and shortlisting of
eligible candidates made.

elections were held in the Parliamentary Mode after the Lingdo Commission
Recommendation and Supreme Court directives. The following students were elected

Met the students batch-wise in mid October in the Adalat to redress the grievances of

Tourism Club
Dr Rajeev Thomas and Sri Bnesh Raghavan coordinated the activities of the Club. Mr
Shivaramakrishnan E and Ms Anila Judy Krian were the student coordinators. Our
college won Rs. 5000/ as special award for the best performance by the DTPC,
Wayanad.
