The Hot Springs Confederate Memorial is located in Landmark P l a z a , Hot Springs, Garland County. Formerly known as Como Square, Landmark Plaza is the center of a triangle bounded by Market St. , Ouachita St. , and Central Ave. The monument, which faces northeast, was made by the McNeel Marble Co. of Marietta, Georgia. It depicta a standing Confederate soldier wearing a h a t , coat, and pants typical of the Civil War era. His proper left foot is forward, and h i s hands are clasped at the top of a rifle barrel t h a t has the butt to the ground in front of-the proper r i g h t foot. A bedroll is draped Dver his proper left shoulder and is t i e d at t h e proper right waist line. The figure is wearing a belt with a canteen and bullet p u c h on t h e proper right and a scabbard on the proper left. The sculpture, made of marble, is 6 ' x 2 4 " ~ 2 4 " . The base, 'made of granite, is l2'x5'x6'.

The Hot Springs Confederate Memorial. is located in Landmark Plaza, Hot Springs, Garland County. Formerly known as Como Square, Landmark Plaza is t h e center of a triangle bounded by Market St., Ouachita St., and Central Ave. The monument, which faces northeast, was made by the M c N e e l Marble Co. of Marietta, Georgia. It d e p i c t s a standing Confederate soldier wearing a hat, coat, and pants typical of t h e Civil War era. Carved on the north face of the base and shaft is "1861/ {flag symbol) / 1865 / CONFDERATE

On the south face of the base is t he inscription "ERECTED / IN LOVING MEMORY / BY THE / HOT SPRINGS CHAPTER / UNITED DAUGHTERS / OF THE CONFEDERACY."

The figure is badly sugared and has black stains on a l l undersurfaces.

Elaboration

June 2, 1934, marked the end of a long struggle by the Hot Springs Chapter No. 80 of t h e k i t e d Daughters of t h e Confederacy to put a Confederate memorial in Hot Springs, which had been t h e only major city in t h e state without one. The campaign began in 1907, when Mrs. J. Davidson Smith moved to H o t Springs from Alabama, a state that had already erected many Confederate monuments, and suggested that Hot Springs b u i l d its own t r i b u t e to its Civil War soldiers. Several contributions were immediately made and a

speaial fund was set up to handle the finances. In 1913 U.D.C. Treasurer Mrs. S . E. Dillon oversaw a special Tag Day to raise money, as well as card par t i e s , teas, dinners, and so f o r t h . By 1 9 2 9 t h e monument fund was still lacking, however, so Mrs. Dillon, now President of the State Division of t h e

. D . C . , asked t h e sta te chapter for $1,000, payable at $200 per year. This -- .Lan was unanimously approved, but the monument was still several years from completion.

Following this financial victory, the next obstacle f o r Dillon and the U.D. C. was to find an appropriate location f o r t h e i r memorial. In 1933 Mr. and Mrs. Dillon convinced the city council to pass a special ordinance to allow it to be placed on what was then Como Triangle. A W.D.C. committee was then created to select a style and design f o r the monument. Finally, a f t e r much planning and effort, t h e Hot Springs Confederate Femoriak was dedicated on June 2, 1934, w i t h a ceremony that included speeches by chapter members and an address by t h e mayor. The final. cost of the monument is believed to be approximately $ 5 , 0 0 0 . In 1953 the c i t y formally gave the U.D.C. the deed to the memorial plot .
