TheStinemetzFamily—byMarshaClayborne (Ed.note:MarshaClaybornehasbeeninspiredtoresearchthehistoryoffamilieswhosenamesappearonthestainedglasswindowsatHopewellUMC.At“Hopewell’sGotTalent”inJanuary,shedisplayedhertalentbydescribingthelifeaccomplishmentsofElmerJ.Brown.Hereisanotherproductofherstudies.)

JohnW.StinemetzwasborninGermanyin1756andcametothiscountrysoonafterbirth.AtHagerstown,Maryland,JohnmarriedHannahHaysofVirginia.Ninechildrenwereborninthisunion,George,Henry,Solomon,John,Abraham,Nancy,Isaac,Hannah,andSamuel.In1826,thefamilymovedtoKnoxCounty. AbrahamStinemetzwasthe5thchildtoJohnandHannahStinemetz.Hewasbornin1800.HemarriedCatherineLahmoninKnoxCountyonMarch30,1830.Theyhadfivechildren:Elizabeth,Abraham,John,Alva,andJames.Abrahamdiedin1830andisburiedintheHopewellcemetery.TheStinemetzfamilylivedinKnoxCountyformanyyears. AlvaStinemetzwasthe4thsonofAbrahamandCatherine.Hewasbornin1838andgrewupinPleasantTownship.HemarriedMarySmith,daughterofJ.B.SmithandMaryBreweronDecember30,1869.Theyhadsevenchildren.Angeline,Benton,Howard,Clinton,Mary,Lenna,andSusan.ThefamilylivedonHopewellRoadandattendedtheHopewellMethodistEpiscopalChurch. ClintonStinemetzwasgrandfathertoJeanRileyandEleanorDoup.ClintonandGertrudeSteinmetzhad8children,Marie,Lawrence,Dale,Ila,Robert,Helen,Floyd,andRichard;EleanorDoup’sfatherisLawrenceandIlaisJeanRiley’smother.Somewherealongtheline,thespellingoftheStinemetznamewaschangedtoSteinmetz. Besidesgoingtochurch,thechildrenattendedtheHopewellSchool.TheladiesweremembersoftheLadiesAidorUMWtoday.ThefamilieswereinvolvedinthePleasantGrange.Besidesfarming,Clintonserved39yearsasclerkforPleasantTownship. Clinton’soldestdaughter,Marie,attendedtheHopewellSchoolandlaterreturnedin1922asateacher.MarieattendedOhioUniversityinAthensandlaterTheOhioStateUniversity.ShetaughtattheMorganSchoolin1921onMartinsburgRoadandtheHopewellSchoolin1922.ShealsotaughtSundayschoolattheHopewellChurch. ThefirstStinemetzreunionwasheldatRiversideParkin1926.TheSteinmetzfamilystillmeetseveryyearfortheirfamilyreuniontoday.SeveralSteinmetz/StinemetzfamilymembersstillattendHopewellUnitedMethodistChurch.

DidYouKnow…AboutJohnWesley?(Part2)--bytheeditorsofChristianHistoryInstituteBecauseoftheenormousoutputofpublicationsdesignedforthecommonman,JohnWesleyhasbeencalled“TheFatheroftheReligiousPaperback.”Sermons,tracts,pamphletsofeverykind—numberingaround5000itemscamefromhispen!WhenJohnandCharlesWesleyfoundedthe“HolyClub”atOxfordin1729,notmorethanfiveorsixmembersoftheHouseofCommonswenttochurchatall!WhenJohnWesleyhadhis“heartstrangelywarmed”onMay24,1738,hewasalreadyordainedasaministeroftheAnglicanChurch!

ThegreatestsuccessofMethodismwasnotamongtherichand“successful”butamongthepoor;butironically,simplecommonerswereoftentheveryoneswhopersecutedWesleyandtheopen-airpreachersmost!Forallthepowerofhiseyesandvoice,JohnWesleymeasuredfive-feet-threeinchestallandweighed128pounds!

NursingOutreachMinistry–ElaineFarie,R.N. AdateofSunday,May7ischosenforusalltocelebrate“LIFE”.The9:30AMworshiptimewillbesharedwithLaurenStevens,CommunityOutreachPartnershipcoordinator,fromLifelineofOhio.Shewillspeakontheneedfororgan,eyeandtissuedonation–withthefocusontheChristianaspectofthis–sinceweareallGod’s

Creations.ShewillthenattendservicesatSouthVernonUnitedMethodistChurch,withthesamemessage.

OverheardinanOrchardSaidtheRobintotheSparrow,“IshouldreallyliketoknowWhytheseanxioushumanbeingsRushaboutandworryso.”SaidtheSparrowtotheRobin,“Friend,IthinkthatitmustbeThattheyhavenoHeavenlyFatherSuchascaresforyouandme.”

TheUMWmetforlunchatthehomeofBarbButleronMarch21.Eightmemberswerepresent.TheblessingwasgivenbyBarbbeforethedeliciousmealwasservedtothemembers.Barbreaddevotionscalled“Birds,Bees,Flowers,andFaith.”ShealsoreadscripturefromIsaiah61:1-3.GameswereplayedandprizeswonbyJoanCoonandEllenKaiser.Barbstartedthemeeting,andthesecretaryandtreasuryreportwasgivenalongwithduesandmissionscollected. ThegroupdiscussedtheannualcredituniondinnerthatwillbeheldonMonday,April10th.ThegroupalsotalkedaboutmissionworktohelpoutsomeofthelocalorganizationsinMountVernon.Personalandneededitemswillbecollectedanddistributedtothem.ThenextmeetingwillbeatthehomeofJoanCoonandEleanorDoupinApril.ThemeetingwasadjournedbyEllenKaiserandVirginiaSkinner.

JeanRileyHonoredbyNewDirectionsOnMarch9,JeanRileyreceivedtheMaryHendricksonAwardforherlongtime,faithfulservicetoNewDirectionsDomesticAbuseShelterandRapeCrisisCenter.Jean(asvolunteercoordinator)andMary(ascenterdirector)werethefirsthiresfortheCenterin1982,and35yearslater—justthisFebruary—Jeanturnedinherkeys.Jeanscheduledvolunteersforthe24-hourcall-inhotline.NewDirectionsprovidesthehotline,safehousing,sexualviolenceadvocacy,groupsupport,andmore…freeofcharge.ThecenterreceivesfundsfromUnitedWay,aswellasfromeventssuchasthebenefitdinneratKenyonCollegewhereJeanwashonored.Formoreinformationaboutthecenter:http://newdirectionsshelter.org

PitchingforGraceCollege(WinonaLake,IN),shewent3-0fromthemoundduringtheweekofMarch5,includingagemtoupsetNo.2St.XavierUniversity(Chicago).Lawhonthrewathree-hitteroverSXUtoleadGrace's6-0blankingofthesecond-rankedCougars. Forthatweek,Erinposteda2.07ERAwith14strikeoutsin23.2innings.Overall,shepitchedinsevendifferentoutingsfortheLadyLancersintheweekofMarch5. HighlightsofChurchCouncilMeeting Agroupof12metonMarch19tohearreportsanddiscussthebusinessofHopewellUMC.Finance,Pastor-ParishandUMWreportsaresummarizedelsewhereinthisnewsletter.Trustees:

1. SpringCleanupwillbescheduledforMay6from9AMto2PM.2. Wiringandlightingneedtobeupgraded,andtrusteesareinvitingideasonlocating

outletsandlightsandarecallingonalightingexpertforadvice—withprioritytopreservingthearchitecturalintegrity.Theyrequestedandweregrantedabudgetofupto$15Kfortheproject.

3. Thefueloilfurnacewillneedtobereplaced,probablywithintwoyears.OhioCumberland(MarkRamser)hasofferedtorunthegaslineundertworoadstothechurchatnocharge—asavingsofatleast$8K.Anaturalgasfurnacecouldbeinplacebynextheatingseason.Thesystemwouldrequireductworkchangesbutwouldretainthecurrentgrates…andwouldincludeairconditioning.Trusteesweregrantedabudgetof$7,500fortheproject.

4. Cabinetsandcountertops,beingplannedforthenorthwalloftheSundayschoolroom,wouldincludeplumbingfora(future)sinkandoutletsformultiplecrockpots.Trusteeswillgatherestimatesfortheproject.

5. Projectscompletedinthepasttwoyearsinclude:roofing,drainage,parking,painting,bellrestoration,andsoundsystem.

Newbusiness:Billhasdevelopedan‘EvangelismPlan’forcontactingneighbors,friends,acquaintances,andformermembers—withagoalofbringingotherstoChristandincreasingmembershipatHUMC.Anumberofideaswereoffered,e.g.,findnewneighborsthroughrealtorsandcountyauditor;holdspecialevents;visitneighborswithsomethinginhand;andpromotethebenefitsofasmallchurchfamily.
