HommageáColtraneisacollaborativeprojectincludingcomposersMollyKien,AndreaTarrodi,PerEgland,KatarinaLeymanandtheNordicSaxophonequartetpremieringattheStockholmConcerthouse1stofDecember2017.Theprojectpremieredin2017(50yearssincethedeathofJohnColtrane)isourwayofacknowledgingcomposerandmusicianJohnColtrane.We’lldothisbybuildingthisprojectaroundhismusicallegacy.TheColtranelegacystretchesallthewayintothecontemporaryartmusicsceneandeveryoneinvolvedinthisprojecthadsomerelationshiptoColtraneandhismusic.TheideafortheprojectquicklyformeditselftobeaconcertprogramwithnewcompositionsforsaxophonequartetinspiredbyColtraneincludingnotatedaswellasimprovisedelements.Allcomposersintheprojectwillcreateanewpiecewhereallorpartsofthiscompositionrelatetoaspecificpieceofmusic/improvisationbyColtrane.Theprogramwithallitspieceswillbeformedasaconcertofappr.60minutes.TheideaisthatthisprogramwillworkbothonthetraditionalclassicalconcertstageaswellasinajazzcluboraconcertvenuemoredevotedtojazzmusicTheencounteringoftheworldsofartmusicandjazzisexitingandthebordersbetweenfreeformjazzandcontemporaryartmusicissometimesalmostinvisible.Fromthispointofviewitwouldbeamazingtobringthismusictoanaudiencewho’snottheregularvisitortotheartmusicscene.Anextendedideawiththisprojectistohavealocaljazzmusiciantoreacttoourcompositionsandaddshorterimprovisedcommentsduringourshow(thiswillextendthelengthoftheprogramtomorethan60minutes)TheconcertcanalsobeinseveralsetsstartingwithourprogramwithcontemporarymusicinspiredbyColtranefollowedbyajazzgroupdoingasetofjazzmusic.Ourambitionisnottomakejazzmusicbuttocreatemusicfromourmusicalworldofthecontemporaryartmusicandstretchthelimits.

KatarinaLeyman:AsayoungpianostudentIwasdeeplyinspiredbyMcCoyTyner(pianistwithColtrane)andmyfirsttremblingstepsasacomposerwasinthestyleofhim.ThisledtoColtraneamusicalpowerhousewithnocomparison!LatelycontemporaryclassicalmusichasbeenmymainfocusbutnowIfeelreadytoencountermyearlyinfluencesofjazz.IwanttoexplorethemusicofColtraneusingmyowntechniques,bringindifferentelementsandseehowfarIcantakethemandstillbetruetomyownsoundandexpression.Findingmywaybetweenthetwoworlds,orratherfindanddefinemyplaceinbothworlds.Explorethecontrastsaswellasthecommonexpressions.Thiswillbedoneinclosecollaborationwiththemusicianswhoaretoperformthemusic.Writingforsaxophonequartetinthiscasefeelsobviousandnaturalandwasthestartingpointofthewholeproject.

PerEgland:I’vealwaysbeenfascinatedbyJohnColtranewhopossessedanincrediblystrongidentityasamusicianandcomposer.Musicallyhetravelledbetweenthejazzandsomeotherhighlyremarkablemusicalworld.SometimesIgetthefeelingthatColtraneandAlexanderScriabinhadaspecialbond,atleasttheyshouldhavehadthat–inanotherhighlyremarkableworld.
