A young free-thinker named Cecelia, with the help of her friends, struggle to find independance in a strict Catholic

boarding school, overrun by strict nuns.

Synopsis

Characters

Since her parents made her tranfer from public school to St. Jude’s Catholic Boarding School in the 4th grade, Cecelia had trouble adjusting to the changes. Although she doesn’t fit into the mold of the “ideal student”, she attempts, rather poorly, to behave in her new home. Cecelia doesn’t care for rules, struc-ture or authority, which is probably what got her kicked out in the first place. Cecelia is a rebellious think for yourselfer. She is carefree, kind and sensitive to the feelings of others, yet fails to see the consequenses through her actions. She tries to take full advantage of her childhood and live in the mo-ment, yet the rules keep her from doing so. She is often the leader and the “match” that ignites devious situations. She in-stigates mischevious persuits in her structured environment, dragging her otherwise well behaved roomates ,Hope and Grace, with her. When things get dull, Cecelia never lets it be for long. She is fearless and trusting, sometimes to a fault. She follows her gut instincts, which she believes have yet to do her wrong.

Hope is Cecelia’s best friend and confidant. Before Hope met Cecelia, she was quiet and well-behaved student. When they first met as roomates at St. Jude’s Academy, Cecelia began to drag Hope into her adventures. Since Hope recieves ex-cellent grades and is an overall know it all, Hope naturally becomes the “Brain” of the operation. She is a level-headed, logical girl with a lot of common sense for an eleven year old. Hope despises the rules just as much as Celia, but hasn’t the courage to act on it unless Cecelia leads the way. Hope is sweet, kind and shy but yearns to be more confident and sure of herself. Most of all, Hope is someone that would have your back in a fight, even if failure were inevitable. (Which it usually is.)

11

GraceSecondary Character

Grace is one of the four roomates of 5B. She is a good roomate in that she is clean and courteous, but is often left out of the inner circle. This is due to her over cautiousness and fear of getting into trouble by the nuns. She wants to be a part of their posse but the fear of germs and other irrational things keep her from being part of most endeavors. She wears oven mitts around at all times, even during class or sleeping. She keeps her side of the room OCD perfect. She often gets ner-vous or twitchy when she lets Faith’s side of the room get to her, yet usually she is too afraid to say anything about it. Ce-celia and Hope use Grace at times to do unfavorable tasks such as being a look out or acting as a decoy for the Sisters. She deals with it though because honestly, they’re the only “friends” she has.

13

Secondary CharacterFaith

Faith is the fourth and most despised roomate of 5B. She is a huge tattletale and brown-noser. Cecelia and Hope are constantly trying to stay off her radar. She is sister Mildred’s prized student and pet, mostly due to her parents’ substan-tial donations to the school. She keeps her area of the room stocked full of garbage and wrappers from candy and junk food. She is somewhat of a hoarder, packing in all the expen-sive toys and clothes her parents have bought her for her affection. Her parent’s are non-religious elites who dumped their child in boarding school so they wouldn’t have to spend time with her. Faith is a little, chubby troll who is spoiled rot-ton to the core.

Sister MildredMain Antagonist

If Cecelia is the “match”, then Sister Midred is the wick. This sister is filled with hatred and spite for all things children. She despises St. Mary’s convent for condemning her to the school as a teacher. She watches over Cecelia like a hawk, punishing her daily. She values the ways of the “old country” as it was in Ireland when she was a wee lassie. She honors order, subordi-nation, respect for authority and structure in life. Mildred has somehwat of a drinking problem, frequently taking swigs from a flask she conceals around her neck, beneath her robes. She longs to return to the convent where it’s a utopia for middle aged women. She rules over the other nuns on a rampage of hate, spilling her life’s disappointments on the children of St. Jude’s Academy. She is a born dictator and supreme ruler of her own universe, which she imposes onto everyone around her. She despises people whom think differently or “out of the box”, especially individuality and self-discovery of any kind.

Sisters Mabel

Ethyl and PearlSeondary Characters

These three nuns are Mildred’s cronies whom roam the halls and teach the other 5th grade students. They are followers of pretty much whatever Mildred wants. They stick together because they all share the same angst against the convent for transferring them to the Academy. Ethyl is especially good at sniffing out any PDA or “public displays of affection” from her tall perch. She uses a ruler when kids get out of hand, which happens to quite often. Mabel is the gym teacher for the girls and is the muscle of the three. She is short in stature and temperment. Her voice is deep and broading but her whistle is peircingly loud. Pearl is a naive, young sister fresh out of the convent. She doesn’t know any better than to follow the sisters. She isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed yet she is extremely devout and innocent. She follows Mildrend as blindly as she does her faith in God.

Sc. 42 Sc. 43Panel. A Panel. A

[Room 5B, Early Evening]

(Cecelia changes into stealth gear, while Hope stuffs the beds with pillows to make it look like they’re sleeping.)

Cecelia - Okay, we have exactly three minutes before Faith gets back from the vending machine, so we need to leave before then. Grace, call us on the walkie if Faith or the sisters figure us out.

Sc. 44 Sc. 45Panel. A Panel. A

81

Grace - Okay, just hurry back guys. I don’t like putting this germy thing near my mitts for too long.

Sc. 51 Sc. 52Panel. A Panel. A

85

Hope - It must be about 1,000 degrees outside with like 95 percent humidity...

Cecelia - Shh! did you hear that?

(The girls sit in silence a moment and they faintly make out a distant noise.)

[SFX: Mwahaha!]

Hope - I can’t beleive it.

Cecelia - I’m afraid it’s true. The lord of darkness himself. Oh, God, the laughter is blood curdlling...

Sc. 53 Sc. 54Panel. A Panel. A

86

Hope - Look!

(Within the crack, you can make out a glow.)

(Hope spits out water in a fit of disbeleif.)

Cecelia - Where did you get that?

Hope - There’s a neat little troth of water at the rooftop’s edge.

(Hope takes another hearty swig.)

Cecelia - Ew. That’s gutter water.

(Pause.)

Hope - I know that. It’s really hot out here and I....I needed to HYDRATE.

Sc. 57 Sc. 58Panel. A Panel. A

Cecelia - I, uh...have a water bottle.

(Silence.)

96

Faith - (Exploding with anger, she turns towards the back of the room where Cecelia and Hope are sitting) GRRR! I know it was you, Cecelia!

[SFX: Stifled giggling]

Ethyl - Stop dilly-dallying around and PAY ATTENTION, Faith! This is important.

Faith - But sister! I didn’t do anything, it was -

Ethyl - Silence! Now where was I? Oh, yes, Eternal damna-tion...

Sc. 70 Sc. 71Panel. A Panel. A

97

Faith - (Fuming and turning red with anger) GRR! BUT SISTER EHTYL I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING! IT WAS THE WENDY’S IMPOSTER AND THAT TALL FREAK!

[SFX: Ethyl and Faith argueing in the background]

Hope - (whispering) Cecelia, you heard sister Ethyl. Eternal suffering! Why on Earth would you want to go down there?

Cecelia - We’re a bunch of sitting ducks out here! We need to act.

Sc. 72 Sc. 72Panel. A Panel. A

98

Hope - So what’s your big plan? This isn’t just any hole you can drop into.

Cecelia - If were doomed and he’s going to take my soul anyway, I was hoping to at least bargain with him. My soul has got to be worth something sweet.

[SFX: Faith pleads]

Ethyl - THAT’S IT, MISSY. I’ve had it with you. Go sit in the coat room if you’re going to act like a CHILD.

(Faith gets out of her seat and heads towards the coat room.)

Cecelia - It’s now or never. Cut me, Grace.

Grace - (Panicing) My oven mitts won’t fit in the scissor handles!

(Grace repeatedly tries to jam the mitts into handles.)

(Cecelia snaps on goggles.)

Cecelia - Just try and make do! You can do it, Grace, I know you don’t want to spend eternity beneath St. Jude’s!

Grace - Ehhhh....

Sc. 78 Sc. 79Panel. A Panel. A

102

[SFX: Cecelia yells words of encouragement, but they fade into the background and are taken over by the sound of a heartbeat slowly getting louder and louder]

(As we zoom in to the scissors, it suddenly looks filthy and diseased. Grace sweats profusely as the anxiety builds.)

(Suddently the noise stops and grace starts screaming and running around like a madwoman, thrusting the scissors into the air.)

Grace - AHHHH!! (indecipherable noises)

Sc. 79 Sc. 80Panel. A Panel. A

Mildred - Right this way...

Sc. 98 Sc. 98Panel. A Panel. B

[SFX: Creaking of door as it swings fully open.]

(Walking out)

Hope - What?! Why?!?

Cecelia - Well, I feel like I could’ve sold my sould for some-thing really awesome. Like to be a rockstar or I could own my own island or something.

Hope - Sigh...

(Mildred is in a great mood for once as she bets.)

Mildred - Show me the river, Pearl!

(Suddenly, there’s a knock at the door.)

[SFX: bang, bang, bang!]

Mildred - I thought I told you kids to SCRAM. God so help me-
