From the Pastor’s Desk… Committed Christians might wonder why the message of Jesus is truly believed and lived by so few. Often, people who publicly declare themselves “Christians,” display attitudes and behaviors that do not resemble the teaching of Jesus at all. There are even great divisions and divergence of belief within churches themselves. One might wonder: Does everybody read the same Gospel? And, if so, does everybody interpret it the same?
The early Christian community of Matthew’s Gospel obviously faced the same questions. As true believers in the ministry and resurrection of Jesus, they wondered why their fellow Jewish family members and friends failed to embrace the teaching of the Gospel. How was it possible, they probably wondered, that everyone who heard the same message failed to understand what great good it meant for them?
Today’s parable in the Gospel tried perhaps to explain what was happening. Often called the Parable of the Sower, the story appears to be more about the seed itself – than the ability or readiness of the ground to do something with the seed. The seed is obviously the good news of the Kingdom of God, which Jesus proclaimed. In the coming weeks, we will hear different parables about this seed – the news of the Kingdom, as Jesus tries to explain what the Kingdom of God is all about.
But back to the ground – or, as in the explanation of the parable, the people who hear the teaching of Jesus and what exactly they do with it. The parable tries to teach us, if we didn’t know this already, that different people react differently. Many chosen to hear God’s word simply don’t understand or know what to do with it. Some simply choke it out of their lives. Some people do not let God’s word change their lives. They fall away.
The Gospel today reminds us that the word of God always accomplishes the purpose for which it has been given. God’s spoken word flourishes, despite the many roadblocks placed in front of it or the deaf ears it falls upon. True disciples are known for the good fruit that they produce. There is no stopping the power of God in the lives of people who embrace it and make it work. Let’s remain faithful to the task!
Have a good week, Fr. Bill Arnold

Works of kindness and assistance, sometimes in the smallest way, can bring about a profound change in a person’s life. Through the BAA, we have an opportunity to bring about a positive change in the lives of many of God’s people. Shared Parish Information
Parishioners of St. Philip and Holy Spirit! We have opened up both parishes – St. Philip the Apostle and Holy Spirit Church – to those who wish to attend Mass. Attendance is voluntary. The Bishops of Ohio have extended the dispensation to attend Mass until September 13, 2020. Anyone at high risk or who shows any symptoms of illness, should remain at home.
Next Saturday, July 18, 4:00 p.m. at St. Philip
Next Sunday, July 19, 9:00 a.m. at St. Philip (call for a reservation: 614-237-1671)
Next Sunday, July 19, 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit (call for a reservation: 614-861-1521)
• You are asked to wear a mask. If you don’t have one, one will be provided.
• Sanitize your hands upon entering Church.• You will be directed to a pew. Assigned seating.• No moving around during Mass.• Hymn books have been removed from the Church.• No one will be admitted late.• Mass to last no longer than 45 minutes.• Envelopes may be placed in a basket as you exit.• At end of Mass, an orderly dismissal.• Use hand sanitizer when leaving Church.• Please, no conversation/socializing in Church. I know
this may seem difficult. Try it, we’ll get used to it.
Confessions at Holy Spirit: Every Thursday evening, Confessions are held at Holy Spirit Church from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Either Fr. Bill Arnold or Fr. Mike Nimocks will be hearing these confessions. Keep a few points in mind.
• Call to make an appointment. Give only your first name and a possible contact number.
• All confessions are in the Church. Only one person admitted to Church at a time – other doors remain locked.
• All confessions are anonymous and done at a six-foot distance. Your anonymity is always protected. Fr. Arnold/Nimocks have no need or desire to know your identity. Priest sits behind a screen.
• All entry to Church through the bell tower door or elevator door.
Every parish in the Diocese annually hosts a representative from a mission order of the Church. This year, in light of the global pandemic, these appeals are being featured digitally. All mission workers (priests, sisters, and lay people) depend on the support of all of us to make their missionary work possible.
SOLT is a Catholic missionary community – Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity – serving in areas of deepest apostolic need. Because of this charism, our missions serve low-income people or remote areas of the world. These missions are located in the US, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, China, Thailand and Australia. Some of these missions have very little income to support. We are grateful for the help of generous benefactors to make them fruitful.
To donate online, go to www.MISSIO.org. You must enter “Holy Spirit and St. Philip Churches” in the search field. You can also donate at Mass, drop off at the office, or mail in a donation. Please mark the donation “for Mission Appeal.”
Daily Mass Opportunities: Mass is celebrated on Wednesday and Friday mornings in Holy Spirit Church (not the Day Chapel) at 9:00 a.m. There is also a Mass celebrated every Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church. There are seldom more than 10-12 people at a daily Mass. We keep social distance, wear a mask, and use hand sanitizer. This is, for the summer, a good alternative to coming to a more crowded weekend Mass, if that is a concern to you.
Please remember in your prayers all the sick, homebound and/or recovering from St. Philip and Holy Spirit Parishes, especially Scott Belton, Ned Braun, Robert & Lu Cudak, Judy Fitzgerald, Christine Krites, MaryLou Pelzer, and Lisa Rundag, and for those in our parishes coping with physical and mental conditions.
A Thought on Racism: “Every racist act – every such comment, every jab, every disparaging look as a reaction to the color of skin, ethnicity, or place of origin – is a failure to acknowledge another person as a brother or sister, created in the image of God.” U.S. Catholic Bishops, “Open Wide Our Hearts” Pastoral Letter Against Racism
What does “taking up the Cross” mean today? Looking out for all our brothers and sisters, that is what it can mean. Working for the “common good” of every person in our community is another idea. We can do this by wearing a mask in public. I know it is inconvenient. I know it restricts my own freedom. It is our greatest defense of ourselves and others in this pandemic. We can do this!
St. Philip Food Pantry is open on Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is for drive-up only. Groceries are placed into the client’s car. If anyone is new to the pantry, please bring a photo ID, proof of current mailing address, and the names and complete birthdates of anyone living in the same dwelling. At this time, we are not able to accept clothing donations.
NO CATHOLICS OF LEFT OR RIGHT The following is excerpted from a past article in America Magazine, the national Jesuit weekly magazine. I thought it appropriate to all Catholics to again consider this:
“In the United States, toxic partisanship increasingly colors not only our choices at the ballot box but where we shop, what news we read and even how we see the state of the economy. Pope Francis [recently] reminded Catholics that such political loyalties have no place in the Catholic Church. “When Christians take sides and form parties,” the pope said, “[we] become Christians of the ‘right’ or the ‘left,’ before being on the side of Jesus.”
“…This is not because Catholics must be apolitical or centrists or should retreat from the public square. But the Church…is not a polis (a political state) but a communion. And in this communion, we are not Democrats or Republicans, liberals or conservatives, citizens or foreigners. We are rather disciples of the one who is truth, the one for whom justice and love are the only standards of human action.”
Join the 2020 Census Team! The Census Bureau is still recruiting to fill important positions as Census takers. Mass on Facebook, Sunday at 11:00 a.m.: Go to facebook.com/holyspirit43213, all lowercase letters. If you don’t have a Facebook account, you will be asked to create one. However, you are not obligated to post or share any personal information.
Having a Child Baptized? Here at Holy Spirit, we have some helpful guidelines in preparing a family to have their child baptized.
• All parents must attend a Baptism Preparation Class. The class is offered on the Second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the parish office. Preregistration for this class is requested at least one week prior to the class.
• In order to register for the Baptism Preparation Class, the parents must be registered parishioners of Holy Spirit for at least 6 months. If you are not currently registered, we can assist you and register you for an upcoming class.
• Generally, Baptisms take place after 11:00 a.m. Mass on the first and last Sundays of the month. Please note that other children may be baptized on the same day as your child. We do not baptize during the season of Lent. We also do not schedule Baptisms on Sundays that take place near Holy Days or major holidays. (During this pandemic, only one child will be Baptized on a Sunday.)
• The Sacrament may be celebrated in English or Spanish. Please understand that a Baptism may be scheduled in another language on the Sunday you desire. Your child’s Baptism may need to be scheduled on another Sunday.
• For further details or scheduling information, call the parish office at Holy Spirit, 614-861-1521.
