Religious Conflict

Calvinists fought against Catholics in France during the mid-late 16th century.

These protestants were called Huguenots and they were a minority in France

Their leader was a man named Henry of Navarre, who was baptized a Catholic but raised a protestant.

King Henry

Before becoming king, he was the leader of the Huguenots

He eventually converted to Catholicism, ending the fighting

He created the Edict of Nantes in 1598, which gave his former followers religious freedom, but only were Protestant was the religious majority

With both groups not fighting, Henry was able to reform the church

Many attempts on his life were made, and he was assassinated in 1610.

Religious Unity

Henry’s reforms and Edict showed unity, instead of conflict

He was able to do this by converting to Catholicism, but still being semi loyal to his former religion as king
