FHPS Gets Fencing Upgrade
It is with great excitement, Mr Paul Edbrooke, local State MP, announced at our school fair on Friday, that FHPS
will be one of 10 schools to receive funding under a School Pride Grant, to upgrade the existing wire and wooden
paling fences. I know how incredibly well this news will be received by the community who I’m told, first started
this campaign 8—10 years ago. I thank all families who signed Mr Edbrooke’s petition to seal FHPS’s vote. Our
new fence will lift the appearance of the school facilities and provide additional security and safety for all.
Fair Update
Last Friday 28th October, Frankston Heights Primary School
successfully achieved its promise to deliver the ’Best Fair’ yet to the
280 FHPS students and their families and friends. With the weather
glorious, the community arriving in their dozens, stalls were quickly
erected, food and drink started flowing and the music performances
soon entertained the masses who stopped to enjoy the great atmosphere
and variety of stalls on offer. The music performances over 2 stages
were a stand out, from secondary school bands, FHPS musical students, music teachers and
other talented artists, the crowd was most fortunate to witness this talent on
show. All stalls were constantly busy throughout the afternoon with
bargains to be purchased on the White Elephant /School Uniform stall,
silent auction and toy raffle. Food was popular with the BBQ and canteen
working solidly all day to keep everyone happy. Unlimited rides
continued all afternoon with many children keeping a tally of how many
goes on the ‘cha cha’ they’d had. In reflection, we could not have been
happier with the glowing reviews from all the visitors who attended and
for the amazing vibe and great community spirit demonstrated all day. The
success of the fair is directly attributable to the superb teamwork of all
staff, parents, students, office / administration, volunteers and family and
friends who worked hard to deliver a most memorable fair for the school.
We will soon know if the fair reached our targeted fund raising efforts
once final calculations are completed in the next week or so. Again, I
sincerely thank the whole school community for contributing to the
success of our 2016 FHPS Fair. I hope you enjoy some of the comments
from visitors who said: “Great day for a fantastic fete run by fantastic and caring staff. You should all
be proud for what was an awesome day.”
“Great fete today and music from the kids from McClelland College.”
“I know my family had a great time. Definitely the best fair yet!”
“A great day was had by all and the comments from people outside the school
have been full of praise for our little school! It was also lovely to see all our
children being so happy and conducting themselves so beautifully!

SCHOOL FAIR
I honestly couldn’t be more thankful for all the hard work and dedication prior and during our school fair, by all our
staff, students and parents. The fair was a huge success, with the sunshine beaming down on us. As our major
fundraiser for the year it has been a very worthwhile event. The vibe, fun and laughter all round was fantastic, and
the students had a great time. But no matter what the outcome, I was proud to be part of this event with all of you.
We have a wonderful school community. It was great to see people from outside the school attending. From the
bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!!!!!
CHILD SAFETY

REPORTING AND ASSESSMENT This is a busy time of year with students sitting both On Demand and PAT testing. It is important for students to get
plenty of sleep and to maintain good homework routines.
READY SET PREP
Ready Set Prep is well underway with all our 2017 Prep Enrolments attending. It has been great to have the help and
support from the team at Hope’s Early Learning Centre. There are many new families joining our school community
and it is great to hear that the word is getting around about the great things that are happening at our school.

CENTREPAY is now available at our school. Any parents who hold a pension/health
care card can arrange to have deductions made from their fortnightly payments towards
educational expenses. 2017 booklists have been sent home and are due back by 26th October.
Payment for these is not due until 8th December. If you hold a pension/health care card and
would like to utilise CENTREPAY towards payment of the booklists, please complete a form
(available at the school office) or contact Centrelink to have payments deducted. CENTREPAY
can also be used towards payment of excursions/ incursions (including swimming), camps,
uniforms etc. If you have any queries about CENTREPAY please speak with Maria on Tuesday,
Thursday or Friday.
SENIOR HOMESTEAD Report from 5/6L students!
CAFÉ Reading This term reading has been filled with many topics that all help 5/6 students to read using expression and to keep
track of their thoughts.
In CAFÉ reading, we have been practising reading as the author intended and using mood voices. We have been
practising reading children stories with a partner and with varying intonation of different emotions being relayed
in the text. For example, the child was REALLY HAPPY! (Excitedly).
For the second half of reading, we have been taking notes of videos, like reports from Syria and statements from
children who have survived bad experiences, or taking notes from text. One of the main points of this is to keep
track of thoughts by writing them down.
Maths This term we have been focusing on the challenging topic of algebra. Forming formulas, rules and balancing 2
sides of a problem (10=5+5). We have also been trying to find relations between algebraic patterns. This topic
of maths is really improving our ability to problem solve and to think critically.
Formulas Some example of the formulas student have created are for complex problems. All of these rules/formulas were
created by students.

Formula: D= (Nx4) +1
Writing:
Writing, this term has been filled with exciting procedure pieces explaining how to make truffles and to clean
your teeth.
- Adverbs: we have learnt about adverbs and how and when to use them. Adverbs can be used to explain
the frequency, where, how and when. We have played an adverb game where we act out a verb using an adverb
etc. vigorously stir.
- Interactive learning: we have made truffles and rubbed icing all over our teeth and cleaned them. We
then had to explain how we did it, helping us with writing.
We have learnt a lot about writing procedures and using adverbs this term and we are excited to learn more.
Inquiry: Our inquiry this term is investigating how jobs have changed and evolved throughout the years and how they
might change and what they may be like in the future.
So far we have investigated past, present and future, then we select a job. For example a pilot, then in the past
box we write about being a pilot in the past (flying small single engine-prop planes) then in the present (working
with a team of pilots to fly larger commercial planes with lots of electronic equipment), and how pilots may
work in the future (as a back up emergency pilot for a self-flying GPS controlled plane).

Middle Homestead Bike Education
Last week, Middle Homestead students peddled their hardest through what
was an intense but rewarding Bike Education program. Held every year for
year 3 and 4 students, a range of activities and tasks were provided, aimed
mostly at furthering skills and improving awareness of risks when riding.
With a range of riding skills spread throughout the classes, staff and students
worked hard together to ensure everybody learnt something new from the
sessions. Mrs Robinson and Mrs Rolfe explored bike parts and scanning for
potential risks, while Mr Kight, Mr Herley and Miss de Valle ran the practical
component.
Students were taught correct riding technique, road rules including
roundabouts and right of way, riding in groups, and ventured around the
school grounds on draining cross-terrain rides.
All students involved must be commended on their tremendous efforts. The
level of persistence you showed was mirrored by the care you took for other
students who may have fallen off, but continued to pick themselves up and
keep on riding. Well done!
Thank you Mr Kight for organising what all would agree to be an excellent Bike
Ed Week!
This year Frankston Heights Primary School is once again sending a team of Year 5 and 6
students to Maryborough in regional Victoria to compete in the RACV Energy Breakthrough.
This event involves students creating a presentation about sustainability and their role
preparing for the event. It also involves a 14 hour endurance race, during which the students
ride human powered vehicles (HPV’s). The students have spent many hours training and
preparing for this event, arriving at school early, staying late, well after the last bell, and even
going for group rides on Sundays. They have also met and worked with a mentor from
Holden, coming up with their own designs for improving the HPV’s.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the families of the students involved for
their hard work and commitment to the program, this is very much a whole family program
and without their contribution it could not go ahead.
There are a number of businesses and people within our community who have helped us
through sponsorship of the program, we would like to thank them all and acknowledge their
contribution to helping our students.

We are writing to let you know of an Apple iOS 10 bug that is affecting your use of tiqbiz.
This Apple iOS 10 software bug disables an app's custom notification sound and replaces it
with a generic sound. Like many other apps (such as Facebook and WhatsApp) the tiqbiz
notification sound is being affected by this bug.
Fortunately, the fix is very easy:
