IntroductionHealth,Safety&Wellness(HSW)strivestoempowerandenablefacultyandstaffthroughsupportiveandresourcefulleadershiptoengageandcreateahealthy,safeandwellworkforce.TechnicalexpertiseisprovidedbyHSWtotheuniversitycommunitythroughthedevelopment,implementation,andmaintenanceofsustainableprogramsandprocessesinareasrelatedtooccupationalhealth&safety,academicandlabsafety(includingbiosafety);environmentalsafety;firesafety(inpartnershipwithCampusSecurityServices);theUniversity’sinsuranceprogram;short-andlong-termdisability;WorkplaceSafety&InsuranceBoard(WSIB)claimsmanagement;ergonomicassessments;managementofworkplaceaccommodationsandemployeewellnessinitiatives.OccupationalHealth&SafetyActOverviewTheOntarioOccupationalHealth&SafetyAct(OHSA)definesasupervisorasapersonwhohaschargeofaworkplaceorauthorityoveraworker.BrockUniversityiscommittedtomeetingitsdutiesundertheOHSA,includingappointingsupervisorsandensuringtheyarecompetenttomeettheirsupervisoryduties.Aworkerwhohaschargeofaworkplacewiththedutyandtheeffectivepowerto“ensure”thatworkerscomplywiththeOHSAandapplicableuniversitypoliciesandproceduresattractsupervisorystatus.ADepartmentChairmaynothavetheformalpowertosanctionorrewardaworker;howeverthisisnotarequirementforsupervisorystatusundertheOHSA.Theeffectivepowerto“ensure”maybefoundsimplywhenaworkerisclosetothework(or“handson”)andisexpectedtoaddresssafetyissues.Dutiesofsupervisor 27.(1)Asupervisorshallensurethataworker, (a) Worksinthemannerandwiththeprotectivedevices,measuresandproceduresrequiredbythisActand
theregulations;and (b) Usesorwearstheequipment,protectivedevicesorclothingthattheworker’semployerrequirestobe

WorkplaceInjury/IllnessReportinganddocumentingworkplaceinjuriesandillnessisacompliancerequirement.Thereportingprocessgreatlyassistsintheidentificationofissues,concernsandhazardssoappropriateactionscanbetakentoeliminatethehazardormitigatefurtherinjuriesorillness.Thisisdonesothroughinvestigatinginordertounderstandissues,concernsandhazards.TheInjury/IncidentReportFormcanalsobeusedtorecord“nearmiss”hazardsandincidentsthatinvolvemembersoftheBrockcommunity.ThisembodiesandsupportstheIRS.Injury/IllnessReportingFlow
