Welcome to the June edition of the Bush Telegraph.
Volunteers Morning Tea
Thank you to all that attended the volunteers morning tea in May,
this was a great way to celebrate and thank all the wonderful vol-
unteers that assist our Centre and the community of Harrow. We
were fortunate to have support and representation for the day
from the Centre for Participation. The theme this year was “Give
a little and change a lot” and this is certainly what all volunteers
do for every organisation that they assist, we could not run with-
out them. We were pleased to present one of our volunteers
Rhonda Quigley with a volunteering award in recognition of the
significant contribution she makes to the yoga program at our
Centre.
Black Tie Ball
Don’t forget to book your ticket for the Ball on Saturday 9th June,
it promises to be a fantastic evening. If you would like to attend
the Ball but are on your own, we can put you on a mixed table or
if you have any financial barriers preventing you from attending,
please let me know so we may assist you. This night although is
a valuable fundraiser it is also a night of community connections
and celebrations. We want everyone to feel they can participate
in some way and hope that you will join us. We are very excited
about the coming event and look forward to a fun filled evening.

Community Health
Anyone can get the flu
Each year the flu affects thousands of Victorians and puts an enormous amount of pressure on our hospitals and health system. Over 3,500 avoidable deaths occur in Australia every year from complications of seasonal flu, including pneu-monia. The flu isn’t like the common cold, it can hit quickly and last for a few weeks, meaning time off work or school and staying away from family and friends. For vulnerable people, like children, the elderly and people with a weakened immune system, the flu can have serious and devastating outcomes. The flu – or influenza – is a highly contagious viral infection that can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications, including pneumonia. The flu is spread by contact with fluids from coughs and sneezes. The flu is not like a cold. Symptoms last on average one to two weeks but
for some it takes several weeks to recover.
A bout of the flu typically follows this pattern:
* Days 1–3: Sudden appearance of fever, headache, muscle pain and weakness, dry cough, sore throat and sometimes a stuffy nose. * Day 4: Fever and muscle aches decrease. Hoarse, dry or sore throat, cough and possible mild chest discomfort be-
come more noticeable. You may feel tired or flat.
Day 8: Symptoms decrease. Cough and tiredness may last one to two weeks or more. Getting the flu is even more likely if you have been in contact with someone who already has it, or have had some other
type of exposure to the virus, such as overseas travel to areas where flu outbreaks are occurring.
The flu doesn’t discriminate and anyone can be affected – that’s why it is so important that everyone in the community
protects themselves against the flu this season by getting their flu shot
You may have heard that there is a shortage of flu vaccines due to increased public demand but we have good stocks in
place so contact the Centre today to arrange to have your Flu vaccine.

Social Support Group (SSG) - Notice of Trip & Report
This month, Glen Howell (optometrist) and Sandra from hearing Australia joined us at our lunch and talked
to us about the importance of keeping appointments to ensure we keep on top of keeping these valuable
organs in good health. There are many aids that can assist with hearing now and hearing aids have been
refined and not the cumbersome things they once were. We unfortunately clashed dates with the volun-
teers morning tea hence no PAG trip this month. I would like to thank the volunteers who help each month
at Slobas lunch. This day would not be able to happen if it was not for the help that these people provide
and we thank them most sincerely. Please note there will be no social support lunch scheduled for June.

Exercise and Mental Health We all know how important exercise is for keeping us physically healthy. But did you know that exercise can also help keep you mentally healthy? Research shows that people who exercise regularly have better mental health and emotional wellbeing, and lower rates of mental illness.
Why does exercise make us feel better, mentally?
Often, people who exercise regularly do it simply because it makes them feel good. Exer-cise can boost your mood, concentration and alertness. It can even help give you a posi-
tive outlook on life.
The link between exercise and mental health is complicated. Inactivity can be both a cause and a consequence of mental illness, for example. And while we don’t know exactly why
or how exercise boosts mood, here are some possible explanations:
Regular exercise can help you sleep better. And good sleep helps you regulate your
moods.
Exercise can improve your sense of control, coping ability and self-esteem. People
who exercise regularly often report how good achieving a goal makes them feel.
Exercise can distract you from negative thoughts and provide opportunities to try new
experiences.
It offers an opportunity to socialise and get social support if you exercise with others.
The levels of chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin, stress hormones and endor-phins, change when you
exercise.
Exercise increases your energy levels.
Physical activity can be an outlet for your frustrations.
Exercise can reduce skeletal muscle tension, which helps you feel more relaxed. We have a number of Exercise programs at the Centre that you can attend. Please advertise-ments in this newsletter or speak to our staff for available programs. Reference: Better Health Channel
How do you as our members know that the finances of the Harrow Bush Nursing Centre are being looked after regularly and properly? What does the Centre do with their funding and donations? Are they finan-cially secure? These are questions you may have asked yourself. Starting this edition the Centre will be putting a section in our Bush Telegraph every second month keeping you informed of topics falling in the Business area. Consumer feedback is encouraged, so if you have any questions you would like an-swered or a topic of interest, please feel free to email finance@hbnc.org.au. This edition will look at the structure of our Finance Committee and what they do for the Centre.
The Harrow Bush Nursing Centre Finance committee is responsible for overseeing the Centres’ financial performance and risk and implementing resourcing goals as set down in the centres strategic plan. They operate within terms of reference and report to the Committee of Management monthly on areas such as policy review; budget recommendations, resourcing requirements and matters of financial risk. If you would like to know more about the Finance Committee or are interested in being a community representative please feel free to contact the Centre.

Quality & Safety
From the Business Area...
We are pleased to advise that our tank water has passed the appropriate water testing procedure and is now safe to drink. Thank you for your patience. We have introduced improvement forms to provide feed-back on how we can improve services, programs and facilities. These are available in the Centre please
ask our staff for assistance.
Assistance Requested
Assistance from our volunteers would be greatly appreciated to help set up the Harrow Hall on Friday 8th
June at 10am for the Black Tie Ball and then some cleaning up on Sunday 10th June at 10.30am
Please contact Anita for further details. Thank you.
Community Engagement
Facebook Page Did you know we have a Facebook page
“Harrow Bush Nursing Centre”? Please
like our page and get connected on what is
happening at and through the Centre. Re-
cently we launched our first Poll. The
question was “Is the Harrow Mens Shed an
important place for social interaction for
men every week?” 37 people responded
and the results were 100% YES that the
Mens Shed serves this purpose. Thank
you!
Strategic Planning On Friday 25th May, community members,
staff, Committee of Management and
members of partnering organisations
came together for our Strategic Planning
Day. We had a very productive day dis-
cussing the results of the Stakeholder
Survey and moving through the process of
developing the Plan which will be
launched shortly. Thank you to everyone
who attended.
