in the History and Philosophy of
Religion from Harvard. He taught
at Harvard from 1965 to 2008 in
both the Divinity School and the
College, eventually being named
Hollis professor, the oldest
endowed chair at the university.
His courses focused on the
interaction of religion, politics, and
culture. A prolific author, Cox’s
most recent book is The Future
of Faith (Harper-Collins, 2009).
Professor Cox first fell in love
with Italy on his honeymoon
in 1957. He has since returned
numerous times, lecturing
at the Gregorian University
and the University of Rome. He
has also taught the history of
Rome at a Princeton-sponsored
summer institute and toured
several Italian cities to lecture
under the sponsorship of the
Italian Ecumenical Center.

TOUR COST INCLUSIONS Seven nights accommodations at the Grand Hotel de la Minerve; buffet breakfast daily, six lunches, six dinners, including one in a private palazzo, and two receptions; bottled water and coffee / tea with all meals; local wine with lunches and dinners; enrichment program of lectures and special events; escorted sightseeing by motor-coach; entrance fees for visits; airport / hotel / airport group transfers and porterage; taxes; service charges; gratuities to local guides and drivers; $50,000 emergency medical assistance and evacuation insurance.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 non-refundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60

ROMEArrive this morning in the Eternal City and transfer to the elegant Grand Hotel de la Minerve, overlooking the Pantheon. Following lunch at the hotel, stretch your legs on a walk to the nearby Piazza Navona. The balance of the afternoon is at leisure. This evening attend a welcome reception and dinner at an elegant rooftop restaurant.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27
ROME Today’s walking tour begins with a visit to the Pantheon, a marvel of Roman engineering. Then visit the nearby Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome’s only Gothic church, with frescoes by Filippino Lippi, Michelangelo’s Risen Christ, and sculptures by Bernini. Continue to the Ara Pacis Museum, designed by architect Richard Meier, housing one of the most important structures of Augustan Rome. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. Dinner is at Palazzo Sacchetti, in a room adorned with Salviati’sfrescoes of the 1550s, a master-piece of Mannerism.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 28
ROME Today begins at Santa Costanza, whose mosaics illustrate the transition from pagan to Chris-tian Rome. Then continue to adjacent Sant’Agnese fuori le Mura, said to house the bones of St. Agnes. Following lunch, see the Church of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill and the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli, with Michelangelo’s powerful statue of Moses. In the early evening, a visit is planned to the Palazzo Colonna. The private apartments feature enchanting views of Italy by Vanvitelli and frescoes by Pinturicchio.Dinner is at a delightful trattoria.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 29
ROMEEnjoy a day in the Roman countryside, stopping first at the Abbey of Grottaferrata tosee the frescoes, painted in 1610by Domenichino for Cardinal Farnese. Continue for a specially arranged visit to Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia, where Visconti’s The Leopard was filmed in the exquisite 17th- century rooms. Drive to Frascati for lunch and a wine tasting in a charming villa restaurant. Return to Rome, arriving in time for afternoon tea. Dinner and the evening are at leisure.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30
ROMEThis morning, continue with private visits to princely collections. Begin at Casino dell’Aurora to see Guido Reni’s fresco in the garden of thePalazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi, next to the Palazzo del Quirinale. Then walk to thenearby residence of Princess Nicoletta Odescalchi to view Caravaggio’s Conversion of Saul.Conclude with a private tour of Casino Ludovisi, residence of Prince and Princess Boncompagni Ludovisi.
The villa is adorned with frescoes by Caravaggio and Guercino. After lunch, the afternoon is at leisure. Dinner is in one of Rome’s finest restaurants.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31
ROMEDepart this morning for a tour of the Vatican and its Sistine Chapel. Your visit will also feature the antiquities collections, including the Belvedere Apollo, and Raphael frescoes, such as The School of Athens. Following lunch, spend the afternoon at the Borghese Gallery, a veritable shrine of the High Renaissance and early Baroque. Highlights of this treasure trove are works by Titian, Caravaggio, and Canova, as well as Bernini masterpieces. Continue to the Protestant Cemetery, the evocative burialplace of Anglo-American writers,artists, and poets, including John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Dinner is at a popular local restaurant.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1
ROMEA morning drive takes us to Hadrian’s Villa, the greatest of the Roman residences, majestic
even in its ruins. After lunch in Tivoli near the temple of the Sibyl, tour the Villa d’Este, the 16th-century palace built byPirro Ligorio for Cardinal Ippolitod’Este. Recently restored, the whimsical fountains are an engineering marvel and grace one of the most extraordinary gardens of the Renaissance. This evening enjoy cocktails and a festive farewell dinner at the hotel.

This evening attend a welcome reception and dinner at an elegant rooftop restaurant.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27
ROME Today’s walking tour begins with a visit to the Pantheon, a marvel of Roman engineering. Then visit the nearby Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome’s only Gothic church, with frescoes by Filippino Lippi, Michelangelo’s Risen Christ, and sculptures by Bernini. Continue to the Ara Pacis Museum, designed by architect Richard Meier, housing one of the most important structures of Augustan Rome. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. Dinner is at Palazzo Sacchetti, in a room adorned with Salviati’sfrescoes of the 1550s, a master-piece of Mannerism.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 28
ROME Today begins at Santa Costanza, whose mosaics illustrate the transition from pagan to Chris-tian Rome. Then continue to adjacent Sant’Agnese fuori le Mura, said to house the bones of St. Agnes. Following lunch, see the Church of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill and the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli, with Michelangelo’s powerful statue of Moses. In the early evening, a visit is planned to the Palazzo Colonna. The private apartments feature enchanting views of Italy by Vanvitelli and frescoes by Pinturicchio.Dinner is at a delightful trattoria.

ROMEEnjoy a day in the Roman countryside, stopping first at the Abbey of Grottaferrata tosee the frescoes, painted in 1610by Domenichino for Cardinal Farnese. Continue for a specially arranged visit to Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia, where Visconti’s The Leopard was filmed in the exquisite 17th- century rooms. Drive to Frascati for lunch and a wine tasting in a charming villa restaurant. Return to Rome, arriving in time for afternoon tea. Dinner and the evening are at leisure.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30
ROMEThis morning, continue with private visits to princely collections. Begin at Casino dell’Aurora to see Guido Reni’s fresco in the garden of thePalazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi, next to the Palazzo del Quirinale. Then walk to thenearby residence of Princess Nicoletta Odescalchi to view Caravaggio’s Conversion of Saul.Conclude with a private tour of Casino Ludovisi, residence of Prince and Princess Boncompagni Ludovisi.

Following lunch, spend the afternoon at the Borghese Gallery, a veritable shrine of the High Renaissance and early Baroque. Highlights of this treasure trove are works by Titian, Caravaggio, and Canova, as well as Bernini masterpieces. Continue to the Protestant Cemetery, the evocative burialplace of Anglo-American writers,artists, and poets, including John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Dinner is at a popular local restaurant.

ROMEA morning drive takes us to Hadrian’s Villa, the greatest of the Roman residences, majestic
even in its ruins. After lunch in Tivoli near the temple of the Sibyl, tour the Villa d’Este, the 16th-century palace built byPirro Ligorio for Cardinal Ippolitod’Este. Recently restored, the whimsical fountains are an engineering marvel and grace one of the most extraordinary gardens of the Renaissance. Then visit the nearby Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome’s only Gothic church, with frescoes by Filippino Lippi, Michelangelo’s Risen Christ, and sculptures by Bernini. Continue to the Ara Pacis Museum, designed by architect Richard Meier, housing one of the most important structures of Augustan Rome. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. Dinner is at Palazzo Sacchetti, in a room adorned with Salviati’sfrescoes of the 1550s, a master-piece of Mannerism.

ROME Today begins at Santa Costanza, whose mosaics illustrate the transition from pagan to Chris-tian Rome. Then continue to adjacent Sant’Agnese fuori le Mura, said to house the bones of St. Agnes. HARVEY COX, HOLLIS PROFESSOR OF DIVINITYEMERITUS, received his Mastersin Divinity from Yale and his Ph.D.
in the History and Philosophy of
Religion from Harvard. He taught
at Harvard from 1965 to 2008 in
both the Divinity School and the
College, eventually being named
Hollis professor, the oldest
endowed chair at the university.
His courses focused on the
interaction of religion, politics, and
culture. A prolific author, Cox’s
most recent book is The Future
of Faith (Harper-Collins, 2009).
Professor Cox first fell in love
with Italy on his honeymoon
in 1957. He has since returned
numerous times, lecturing
at the Gregorian University
and the University of Rome. He
has also taught the history of
Rome at a Princeton-sponsored
summer institute and toured
several Italian cities to lecture
under the sponsorship of the
Italian Ecumenical Center.
