■ Guidelines for treating opportunistic infectionsamong paediatric individuals infected with, or exposedto, HIV infections have been released. The guidelineswere developed by a paediatric working group of theUS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, theNational Institutes of Health and the InfectiousDiseases Society of America, and serve as acompanion to previously released guidelines for adultpatients.* The paediatric recommendations point outthat the natural history of opportunistic infectionsamong paediatric patients might differ from thatobserved among adults, and that laboratory diagnosismay prove more difficult. Treatment recommendationsshould consider differences between adult andpaediatric patients with regards to drug dosing,pharmacokinetics, formulations, administration andtoxicities, state the guidelines.* see Inpharma 1345: 4, 6 Jul 2002; 800912107
