From the archives

The photographs presented here were made between 1974 and 1987. Any resemblance to the appearance of truth depicted in these pictures is the result of a personal collaboration with the camera’s ability to render a particular portion of space and time. This has been an ongoing pursuit of mine

Ιnsinuations

I take photos on a daily basis of the “riches” of everyday life, chasing after the moment when narration becomes superfluous with the intention of creating a new universe where all is apparent but still something remains unseen, not through symbols but through hints. A springboard for me has been a quote by the great Greek poet Odysseas Elytis: “With lime twigs you may capture birds, yet you’ll never capture their chirp.”

Theatre of life

Theater of life is a very personal project about life - how I perceive of it. It is an exploration of surrealism in everyday life. Theatre of life is an essay that is a combination of my experiences and thoughts about what surrounds me. As a result of fast changing technological development that are shaping our lives and the invading presence of the mass media, many people seem to feel disconnected from the world. Some seek refuge and create alternative realities for themselves. Some merely look for a temporary escape, by letting off steam. Some dress in costumes, play role games or pretend to be heroes from movies, games or Japanese anime. We all find our ways to cope somehow. These off moments are what interest me. Today, the place of the devine power has been taken over by the mass media. It is the mass media that shapes our lives, tells us what is right or wrong and creates the narrative of our existence. We are under the influence of a mass culture that comes straight from the television and the internet. It seems to me, people are increasingly getting lost between the borders of two worlds: the real world in which they live and the world created by the media. This phenomenon can most notably be seen in most highly developed countries, the place, where people rely more and more on technology in everyday life, where the mass media have had the greatest impact on people.

Moment’s Notice

With the exception of a nearly 15 year interruption that occurred during the years when my wife and I were raising our children and establishing careers, I’ve been photographing seriously since about 1970. The vast majority of my work before those parenting/working years was done with one camera (a used Leica M2 I traded my ASAHI Pentax for in 1972) on one kind of film (Tri-X). The work in this set covers a huge time span and includes a few images from documentary projects I did in the late 70’s, but is primarily composed of street photography caught during commutes or rare days spent roaming about.

CHUCK PATCH

“In my work I take my own feelings and questions and transform them into photographic projects. I feel that I am on a quest of introspection and personal understanding. I look at other people and other situations, and while documenting them I know that eventually I will be looking at myself. I dig deep into my own soul and use my findings to create a multi-layered body of work.”

Urban Dreamland

New Zealand is a land at the end of the earth. The capital, Wellington, is a pocket-sized city caught between the ocean and mountains; the harsh southern sun and the frequent sea-borne rains. This is a series on the urban dreamland of this small city - a swiftly changing theatre of light, shadow and ever- present wind. It is a photographic exploration of the inhabitants in this young land and their environment.
