Deputy Principal’s Message Mathematics is one of the key learning areas and as part of the school improvement
plan, a number of intervention initiatives have been implemented for this subject.
Since the last five years, this year it is encouraging to see that NAPLAN results have
revealed our Year three students are performing above state average. As parents and
teachers, it is critical that we continue this growth pattern. We can motivate students to
enjoy engaging in mathematical learning experiences by using the following tips that
have been adapted from BOSTES guide to parents:
Solve mathematical problems with your child, discussing and comparing
different strategies. Remember that there may be several ways to solve the
same problem.
Encourage your child to try different strategies when solving problems,
including the use of diagrams and to check solutions for accuracy.
Provide opportunities for your child to investigate mathematical ideas such as
estimating, probability, 2D, 3D, etc.
Use the language of mathematics-words like under, bigger, faces, prism,
estimate, etc.
Show your child the mathematics that is all around them, such as money,
maps, distances, patterns, time.
Discuss the mathematics your child has learnt at school.
Show your child the mathematics that people use every day, for example,
measurement in cooking, money for shopping.
Play games that involve numbers, money, dice and time.
Use technology, including calculators and computers to solve problems, and
graphics programs to create shapes.

On 31st October, 2015 Green Valley Islamic College was awarded the
First Prize for having the Best Edible Garden. This competition was
organised by the Liverpool City Council and their judges were very
impressed with our school garden.
Currently produce such as carrots are being consumed by students
as part of ‘Crunch and Sip’ initiative that encourages students to
develop a love for fruit and vegetables early in their lives, thereby
having better chances of upholding healthy eating habits later.
Garden produce is also used by students in cooking as part of les-
sons on where the food comes from. Additionally, students use plants
such as sunflowers when they learn parts of plants in Science. For
writing procedures, students use produce from the garden to prepare
a dish, before writing about it.
Teachers take every opportunity to use the garden to provide hands -
on learning experience.
Kindergarten What a great start we have had to Term 4. This term will
see the inclusion of the final few sounds of the
alphabet as well as continued revision of the sounds and
spelling rules from previous terms. We will
continue to use a range of fun, practical and interactive ac-
tivities to further develop student understanding. In class,
we will be continuing with guided and independent writing
activities as students are enjoying experiencing the different
writing activities in class and are making great progress. We
are super excited about our excursion to Featherdale Wild-
life Park this term! We hope to learn more about native Aus-
tralian animals and their natural habitats. We look forward to
sharing our experiences with you in the next newsletter.
Year One Spring is here and the Year 1 students are excited about it! In
Term four students have been learning about the weather and
the seasons. To build up their excitement, students visited the
school garden and planted sunflowers. They planted the seeds
and watched them grow every week. Also as part of the English
program this term, Year 1 students have learnt to write proce-
dures. They wrote a step by step procedure on how to plant flow-
ers. Go on, give your child a shovel and some seeds and watch
them plant!
Year Two On Thursday 29th October Year 2 students stepped back into
1877. They visited the NSW Schoolhouse Museum which was
the first public school building in North Ryde. Students were in-
volved in a 1880s re-enactment lesson, seated on long-toms and
wrote on slate boards and used ink pens to write copperplate in
their workbooks. Students were engaged in many hands-on ex-
ploration activities such as; examining old photographs, using a
rubber stamp and jelly pad to make photocopies, dressing up in a
pinafore and sailors’ collars dancing around the maypole and
learnt how to play with marbles, knuckles and spinning tops. Year
2 students were able to identify how school life was in the past
and the privileges they now have in the present.
Year Three This Term Year 3s are learning about Celebrations and Com-
memorations integrated with HSIE, Cooperating Communities.
The students are given the opportunity to identify Celebrations
and Commemorations held in their community and value their
significance. Year 3s are really excited in Science this term as
they can conduct experiments on the topic “Feeling Hot! Hot!
Hot! The students display keen interest on such experiments and
are actively involved hence gain greater knowledge and under-
standing of the concepts taught. Moreover, the students will be
making musical instruments in CAPA allowing the students to
explore, create and play a variety of patterns on the musical
instruments. In PDHPE the students are learning about being
safe in water. To promote water safety awareness, the students
made beautiful posters and did oral presentations about water
safety and safe living. Students also enjoy playing Hockey during
sports.

Year Four Years 4s have embarked upon a very busy and important year of
their school life. This term Year 4s are looking into Who Will Buy
for HSIE and Creative Arts Advertising Sells which is closely
linked with the unit where students learn about buying and selling
of products. In Science students are learning about What Class
Are You In which discusses the differences between living and
non-living things and PDH is about Personal Health Choices.
This term promises to bring yet more inspiring activities to look
forward to with yearly exams being the highlight of the term.
Year Five Term four is a challenging term for Year 5s as they
are getting ready for the final year of the primary
education. The students learn about the gold rush
and to extent their knowledge they visited Bathurst
Goldfields. The excursion to Bathurst, on the 3rd
November, was the highlight of the year. Departing
school at 5.30am, breakfast at The Blue Mountains at
7.00am, set the tone for an exciting day. The students
actually experienced the ‘Gold Rush’ as they all
rushed to pan for gold – some students were excited
with their findings. Year 5s enjoyed making and eating
damper filled with mouth-watering syrup.
Year Six
Students in Year six have enjoyed a busy and productive year. This
term started off with the GAT exam in week four. They have been
immersed in the learning of Survivors for Science and Globally
Connected by Trade for HSIE. Students are looking forward to the
swimming classes that are going to happen in weeks eight and nine
which ties into their PDH unit of active lifestyle.
The excitement is building up as the end of the year is approaching
and students are looking forward in anticipation to their graduation in
week 10. This term will mark another milestone for many students as
students are going to bid farewell to primary years of schooling and
start a new journey of high school. Year six teachers would like to
take this opportunity to wish the students of year six the very best for
their future endeavours.

3rd Place = Purple (3,340 points).
Congratulations to all the teams.
Swimming
Years 2, 4, and 6 will be participating in the learn to swim program in weeks 8 and 9 of this term. Parents are to ensure that all of their
child’s belongings are clearly labelled with their name and class. Parents are to also ensure that their child has correct swim wear,
sunscreen, a water bottle, and a healthy snack. Parents and students are reminded that they are to return their permission note and
money to their class teacher before the cut-off date which is Friday Week 6,13th November.
Do an hour of physical activity everyday
Children need at least 60 minutes of activity each day. Children are not going to have enough physical activity while at school. Families
can plan extra activity into their lives to make up the difference. It is also important to remember to stay physically active during the up-
coming summer holidays.

It's been around for millions of years, but it's no more than a month old. What is it?
