Healthy Beginnings: Enhanced Home Visiting ProgramEvaluation Highlights Enhanced home visiting inspires healthy beginnings for Nova Scotia families. All children deserve a healthy start in life. Nova Scotia’s Healthy Beginnings program helps families get the support they need to give their children the best start for a bright future.
“It was such a great support to have someone be there when we had questions or concerns…We are very thankful for this program.”
About the programThe Healthy Beginnings: Enhanced Home Visiting Program empowers parents to help their children thrive in their first three years of life. It is designed for families facing challenges, such as
• poverty• unemployment• lower education • social isolation• or family violence.
The program builds on parents’ strengths to celebrate what they are doing well and to help them learn new skills, work toward goals, and connect with other supports in the community.
The program is funded through the federal Early Childhood Development Initiative and is delivered by Public Health Services in communities throughout Nova Scotia.
Evaluation and key findingsThe program was evaluated in 2009 in three health districts—South Shore, South West, and Annapolis Valley. The results show that the home visiting program provides direct and positive benefits to families. An overwhelming majority of families who participated in the evaluation (98%) expressed satisfaction with the program.
Families reported gaining a wealth of practical information and supports to help them build knowledge and skills in areas such as
• child growth and development• positive discipline• child learning• safety• and healthy eating.

010 The evaluation revealed that families are
using the knowledge and skills gained through the program to provide better support to their families. Examples include engaging with their children (reading, making toys, playing, telling stories with them), using positive and age-appropriate discipline, and providing safer and healthier environments.
The program enhanced families’ ability to cope with stress in their lives. Parents reported being more patient with their children; more able to deal with difficult situations; and less anxious about parenting. The program helped couples and families relate in positive ways to build healthier relationships.
Through the program, parents gained confidence in parenting and in their ability to advocate for their children and themselves. The increased confidence of parents also translated into enhanced self-esteem and feelings of independence, which motivated some participants to go back to school and seek better jobs.
Parents said • they feel less isolated; • they are better informed about resources in the community • and are more confident about using those resources.
Some women reported that the program has been instrumental in improving their mental health, which has had a positive impact on the health of their children and families.

“It’s not just about the kids; it’s also helped us have a better relationship with [each other] because of some of the things that we’ve been taught in the program about rewarding ourselves as parents.”
