AND LATER THIS WEEK
GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH
Message from Monsignor René Mathieu (1) This weekend, as we celebrate Palm Sunday of the Passion of the
Lord, we are making use of the short form of the entrance and of the
Liturgy of the Word, omitting the 1st reading, responsorial psalm, and
2nd reading. We are using these optional forms in consideration of our
many elderly parishioners, and because of parking problems when
multiple Masses are scheduled at the same locations. (2) I urge all pa-
rishioners to participate as fully as possible in the liturgies of Holy Week, especially
those of the Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil). In ob-
serving these holy days, we join with believers all over the world who celebrate
God’s merciful love as revealed in the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus
Christ. During the week ahead, kindly raise up in prayer those who are beginning
their last days of preparation for the sacraments of initiation they will receive on the
Easter Vigil. Those of us who have had close contact with them can see wonderful
things happening in their lives and how the Lord continues to tug at the hearts of
people in our community in often surprising ways! (3) As we have done for several
years, a single parish-wide celebration of the Holy Thursday and Good Friday
ceremonies (April 2-3) will begin at 7:00 pm at St. Joseph Church. The Easter Vigil
(April 5) will begin at 8:00 pm, which is the earliest we can begin this nighttime
ceremony in Maine this year. Again this year, the Easter Vigil will be celebrated in
two locations. At St. Joseph Church, it will include those receiving Baptism, Confir-
mation and First Communion. At Most Holy Trinity Church, these sacraments of
initiation will not be included, permitting a briefer ceremony for those so inclined.
No other Masses are permitted that evening. On Easter Sunday, in addition to the
usual schedule, we are adding a 9:30 am Mass at St. Joseph and an 11:00 am Mass at
St. Philip. (4) Assignment of Clergy: Effective June 1, 2015, Bishop Robert P.
Deeley is appointing Fr. Louis J. Phillips, current interim superintendent of Maine
Catholic Schools, as pastor of St. Anne Parish, Gorham; St. Anthony of Padua Parish,
Westbrook; and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Windham. In addition, Bishop Deeley
is announcing the retirements of Fr. Joseph J. Koury, administrator of St. Anne
Parish and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, and Fr. Reginald R. Brissette, senior
priest at St. Anthony of Padua Parish. Father Brissette served as pastor of St. André
Parish in Biddeford from 1995 until 2005. He will remain in residence at St. Anthony
of Padua Parish, where he will continue to be active in ministry during his retirement.
(5) Thank You of the Week: To the 150 or so people who organized, participated in
and supported the fundraising Bach concert last Sunday afternoon at Saint Joseph
Church to benefit the repair of the Most Holy Trinity Church organ. Thank you!
JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 5 - Msgr. Tonne:
She was listening to her seven-year-old grandson trying to make polite conversation
with a six-year-old cousin who was visiting for the first time. After a long, uncom-
fortable pause, he turned to the girl and asked, “Lost any teeth lately?”

Holy Week - 2015
The Sacred Triduum
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of Holy Week: Masses
will be celebrated at the usual times and locations.
Funeral Masses are not permitted on Holy Thursday,
Good Friday and Holy Saturday. However, the funeral
liturgy outside of Mass may be used on those days and
celebrated in church.
Holy Communion for the Sick: On Holy Thursday and
Good Friday, Holy Communion may be given to the
faithful who attend the liturgies on those days, and may
be brought to the sick after the evening liturgies. Before
the Easter Vigil Masses on Holy Saturday, Communion
may be given only to the dying.
Holy Thursday: Sacred oils blessed by Bishop Robert
Deeley at Tuesday’s Cathedral Chrism Mass will be
publicly received in the parish during the Evening Mass
of the Lord’s Supper at St. Joseph Church at 7:00 pm.
Afterwards, the Eucharist will be in repose downstairs,
in Ste. Anne’s Chapel where adoration will continue
until 10:00 pm when a Tenebrae service will be led by
parishioners.
Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence from
meat. All Catholics aged 14 and older are bound by the
law of abstinence from meat. Catholics aged 18 and
older until their 59th birthday are bound by the law of
fast. At 3:00 pm, the Way of the Cross will be celebrated
at Saint Joseph (French), and at Most Holy Trinity,
St. Margaret & St. Philip (English). The Celebration of
the Lord’s Passion will be at St. Joseph Church at
7:00 pm, including the Liturgy of the Word, the Adora-
tion of the Holy Cross, and Holy Communion.
Holy Saturday: Several priests will be available 3:00-
4:00 pm (& longer if necessary) at St. Joseph Church for
individual confessions on Holy Saturday afternoon.
There are no 4:00/4:30 pm Masses on this day.
The Easter Vigil is the only Mass permitted on the
evening before Easter Sunday; it may be celebrated only
after nightfall (8:00 pm this year). The celebration at
St. Joseph Church is scheduled to include the sacra-
ments of initiation for 5 individuals. The Easter Vigil
will also be celebrated without the sacraments of initia-
tion at Most Holy Trinity Church at 8:00 pm.
Easter Sunday: Nine Masses are scheduled in Good
Shepherd Parish on Easter Sunday, including additional
Masses at St. Philip & St. Joseph. Check the schedule of
Mass intentions for times and locations.
Easter Communion: In the USA, the obligation to
receive Holy Communion at least once a year may be
satisfied from the First Sunday of Lent to Trinity
Sunday (May 31). For a just cause, this “Easter Duty”
may be fulfilled at some other time of the year.
We appreciate your continued support and prayers on
behalf of the Elect who are to receive the Sacraments of
Initiation during the Easter Vigil on Saturday,
April 4 at 8 pm, St. Joseph Church.

About TENEBRAE: The name ‘Tenebrae’ has been given to this Office be-
cause it is celebrated in the hours of darkness. It symbolizes ‘The Agony in the
Garden’. The tone of the service is noticeably mournful. A large triangular
candlestick holding 15 candles is placed on the altar. At the end of each psalm
or canticle, one of these candles is extinguished, but the one at the top is left lit.
During the singing of the ‘Benedictus’, six other candles are put out. Then the
master of ceremonies takes the candle from the triangle and holds it upon the
altar while the cantor repeats the antiphon after the canticle, after which, it is
removed during the recitation of the Christus antiphon and final prayer. As
soon as this prayer is finished, a noise is made with hands and seats, which
continues until the candle is brought back and shows, by its light, that the
Office of Tenebrae is over. Each candle being extinguished depicts the deser-
tion in the garden of the apostles & disciples, one after the other. Jesus, our
Light, though despised and hidden, is not extinguished. This is signified by the
candle which is momentarily placed on the altar. It symbolizes our Redeemer
suffering and dying. In order to express his burial, the candle is removed. A
noise is heard where all is now darkness. This expresses the convulsions of
nature when Jesus expired on the cross: the earth shook, the rocks were split,
the dead came forth from their tombs. Then the candle suddenly reappears.
The noise is hushed and homage is paid to the Conqueror of death.
Tenebrae will take place in Ste. Anne’s Chapel on Holy Thursday evening
at 10 pm, directly after Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
Baskets to collect the rice bowls will be in the back
of all churches for the Triduum & Easter Masses.

April 12 – Youth Mass & Baptism Celebration
Saint James students in fourth grade were given a challenge to see who could build the tallest structure using 20 pieces of spaghetti, a yard of tape and a yard of string with a marshmallow on the top. It was an engineering challenge where students had to work together in small
groups; bounce ideas off one another and then try something; test it to see if it worked; then improve upon their design, and test it again, until they were able to create this
structure.
All grades at Saint James School try to incorporate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) into the classroom, and students enjoy these challenges. It awakens the creative mind to problem solve the solution to these challenges!

MY FRIEND AND I STORYTIME Fridays, 11-11:30 am in March, April and May
Parishioners, come and join our librarian as she has a storytime for young children (ages 0 to kindergarten) at Saint James School. Mrs. Souza starts and ends each
session with a song. She reads from quality literature each week and if time permits, has a related activity. Grandparents, parents, or any parishioner can come with a child under school age. You must stop in the office and sign in, and then you will be directed into the St. James Library. There is no fee and it is a good opportunity to expose your child to quality literature, meet other parishioners with children the same age as yours, and see St. James School.
Saint James School Kindergartners and First
Graders had a special treat recently as grand-
parents came in to read their favorite
books with the classes. Each student
was so proud when their special some-
one came up to read and all the
students listened with rapt attention.
This was an extension of Read Across America where
Saint James School celebrates reading!
