JUNE 2017
Under construction… Good Shepherd is going to get started on such much needed repairs to our buildings. For this first phase we are going to be installing new windows and doors in the parish hall, doing some spalling (concrete) repairs to the walls of the sanctuary, and repairs to the windows and hardware in the church. We were given $20,000 by the Laurence H. Dorsey Hawaiian Foundation towards the windows and doors. This is the same foundation that gave us $10,000 last year for new stainless steel cabinets for the kitchen in the parish hall to support our ministry with Ka ‘Ohana Kitchen. Our administrator, Cora Brown, put in an application to them again, saying that the building that we serve the poor with our meal program needs to be updated and that we hoped to replace the windows and doors in the hall we use to serve with our Ka ‘Ohana Kitchen ministry. The Building and Grounds committee (Peter Lee, Alex Davis, Dutch Akana, Larry Brown) have been negotiating with a window supplier and are nearly ready to get started (a second supplier was also contacted). We will also be doing concrete repairs to the wall under the stained glass window closest to the pulpit. You may notice places where the concrete walls are flaking. We need to do some “spalling” work. This involves removing old concrete damaged by water and salt in the original beach sand that they used, and rusted rebar if necessary and repairing with new steel rebar and concrete. The other thing in this first phase is hardware and cosmetic repairs to our stained glass windows. Many of the windows do not open properly, some do not close properly and all are showing their age. We have $31,000 in the building fund, thanks to parishioners generous gifts, and another $15,000 for capital improvements that we put into this year’s budget, that and the $20,000 foundation grant is going to fund the project. Parishioners are invited to use the Building Fund envelope in their offering envelopes, or just writing “Building Fund” on the memo line on your check to make a special donation for the building fund. Building and Grounds and Stewardship will be working on phase 2 which will involve more repairs as we finalize the project list and budgets. Once we have finalized that list and budgets, we will than be asking our parishioners for donations in a special capital campaign to help take care of the buildings that we have been entrusted with for ministry. It has taken us much longer to get started than we hoped. Thank you for your patience. The list of “must do, should do, could do” seems to get longer with every Vestry meet-ing. We have started on a few things on the “must do” list while finalizing the rest of the project. Stay tuned for further developments.

TIME CAPSULE On Saturday, September 10, 1910, the cornerstone for the new Good Shepherd Church in Wailuku, Maui was laid and in the blue stone block was placed a copper tube filled with what the congre-gation wanted to share with the future. There were hints as to what it contained but it was not until Sunday, February 26, 2017, when the corner stone was opened and the metal tube removed and opened that the contents would be made known. The copper tube, measuring 9” x 3” was machined with a brass top that unscrewed. Two coins fell out and the tube itself appeared to be stuffed with rolled up papers. Knowing that old paper would be fragile it was decided to attempt to remove the contents later with the advice of train conservators. The decision
was reached that the metal tube would have to be cut open, so on March 19 the bottom was sawn off and the contents pushed out to finally reveal what the congregation of 1910 chose to share with us in 2017.
Contained in the time capsule of 1910 were the aforementioned coins, an 1892 US “Columbian” half dollar and an 1883 Hawaiian Kalakaua coin. The rolled-up papers revealed:
A list of Rector and Vestry.
A list of the Women’s Auxiliary and their donation of $25.00 to complete the subscription for the Good Shepherd stained glass window.
Another list of all the donors for the stained glass window mentioned above, dedicated to the memory of the Rev. George Brayton Whipple.
Copies of the July and August 1910 editions of the Hawaiian Church Chronicle.
A bible dated 1871 belonging to the Rev. William S. Short, Rector of Good Shepherd Church.
A lady’s prayer book dated 1875 belonging to Julia Gilmore Lufkin, wife of the Senior Warden.
A printed copy of the Constitution and Canons of the Missionary District of Hawaii dated 1908.
A printed copy of a sermon given by The Rt. Rev. Henry B. Restarick at St. Andrew’s Cathedral on July 19, 1908.

Volunteers Needed: We are looking forward to the tremendous things God is going to do through the ministries of Good Shepherd. as we move into the Summer Season. Many ministries are gearing up to be stronger than ever before as they seek to be a blessing to both our church and community.
Time is one of those things we all have on our hands. We might feel like we have little time or a lot of time, but the reality of it is that we ALL have the same amount of time to deal with. It’s up to us however, HOW we spend that time!
Our church volunteers are the unsung heroes of Good Shepherd and the lifeblood of our ministries. Volunteers often give of their energy, skills and time because they are passionate about the mission of the church.
However, more assistance is needed by: Signing up on one of the empty slots above, call parish office. Assist in Vacation Bible School, June 19-22, see Bessy Evangelista Fellowship Commission Chair is needed, call Fr. Craig Teams needed to rotate to mow church grass, see Alex Davis. Handyperson to do minor repairs, see Alex Davis

Continue: Time Capsule
A form of prayer for laying a cornerstone dated September 7, 1910.
A newspaper article announcing the laying of the cornerstone on September 10, 1910.
More coins.
A commemorative pin with photograph of an unknown young man.
In the future, we will have to decide how to safely share and display these precious items. In the meantime, they will be stored in archival, acid-free boxes and facsimiles have been made and photographs taken to be shared.
Going forward, it has been decided to create a 21st century time capsule to be resealed with the 1910 cornerstone for the future congregations of Good Shepherd Church. We will include much of what was originally placed there, lists of clergy,
vestry and commissions, a message from our current Bishop, a copy of the service bulletin, photos of the present church and grounds and of the opening of the cornerstone and time capsule, commemorative Hawaiian quarters and other coins and most important, our stories of what Good Shepherd means to you. Submit your stories and photos, by email, to the office by Friday, July 14, 2017, so that they can be printed on acid-free archival paper then placed in the new time capsule to be sealed into the cornerstone on Sunday, July 30, 2017, at the Bishop’s Annual visit to Good Shepherd. We will of course have a festive potluck that Sunday to celebrate sending our message to the future just as the congregation of 1910 did for us.

Hawaiian Island Ministries (HIM):
Reflections from our participants:
HIM has been mentioned around church for quite some time. My cousin
has attend this life changing event and has said great things about it. At
first, I was hesitant to attend HIM, but I knew it was going to change me
for the better. I could feel myself changing for the better at HIM, through
all sessions and worship services. One of the speakers mentioned, “If you
believe in Jesus. If you’ve invited Him into your heart, you never need to be afraid of the enemy! You
are His kid. You are under His protection.” If you accept Jesus, he will guide you through the storm
you are in. If you want good to happen in your life, you must get through the bad. God puts us through
storms that he knows we are able to fight through and survive from. He knows you will be able to fight.
- by Sandi Agpoon
HIM is truly an experience to remember. This is my second year attending the conference. I ask, why
do we not understand the value of our God? Why are we not picking our God, the man, who created
us? The man who created our yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He is a man who is willing to love us in
our worst and most broken state and yet we choose to not let Him in. He is a man who loves us so much
that He was willing to give His only son for us to have eternal life with Him. All He simply ask is that
we worship Him and pray to Him. Why do I need to pray to God if He is the maker of my yesterday,
today and tomorrow? He simply wants to have a conversation with us. He wants to hear about your
day...how you are...how everything is going...things you’re hopeful for, in your tomorrow and tomor-
rows to come. But will you be prepared for the things you ask for , in your tomorrows? HIM has taught
me that God is more than just a man who creates. He is my father, my teacher, my savior and I have
some work to do on the worship side of my life. - by Chancellor Brown
Hawaiian Island Ministries has continually been a bridge for me to extend the connection between me
and God. This is my third time attending the conference. The event was genuinely astonishing and to
see every age group seek God, love and unending worship made me feel like I was part of something.
“Mercy” was the theme this year. God gives us mercy even when we don’t deserve it. We give mercy
and we receive mercy, but not all can be merciful. Speaker Brian Holland said, “The cross is God’s dec-
laration that you are worth it.” I understand the sacrifices God has made for us. I realize that I am
loved by the Lord and that I have something to contribute to this world because he didn’t just create me
just because. He created me because I have a purpose and I will live to pursue it. Another speaker, Nate
Stratman said, “You are not the future of your church, you are the now.” Attending church makes me
happy and praising the Lord brings me joy. - Angela Cainguitan
I did not know what HIM was or what it was all about. My older sister attended the conference and
told me that she came back a new person, HIM changed her life. I’ve learned many things at the confer-
ence and what some of the speakers had to say, really hit me hard. Their speeches made me feel closer
to God. The event affected me so much, that I too, came back home as a new person. I learned that
God is with you every second of your life and that he is watching you in all that you do. He is there to
give us strength and power when we need it. He is there to help us when we are suffering with a problem
of any kind. Whenever you’re suffering of any kind, pray to God to help you and give you power and
strength. I am looking forward to attending the next HIM conference. - Kimberly Taroma
